used cars-Jan. 1969

The old house I'm remodeling turned up some old newspapers, dated about January, 1969.

Amazing what you find inside the walls of a house.
So within 4 years a 66 pickup had lost more than half it's original value.

Re: used cars-Jan. 1969

I also remember those days quite well. I actually bought a '62 Impala 2-Dr Sport Coupe with a 283 and recent New Paint in February of '69 for $450.

But the great deal I passed on was a '56 Chevy Convertible in '68. Black on Black, Solid #3 Condition with recent New Paint for $295!! The problem was, I wanted a V-8 with a Manual Trans and this was a 6 Cylinder with an Auto Trans. To a 15 year old kid, changing one of them would be possible, but changing out both was a little too much, therefore I passed.

...wish I bought it and stored it in a garage all these years though.

Values dropped pretty quick back then, but it was great if you were buying. Even in 1975, I bought a '66 GMC 1/2 Ton Short Bed Step Side, 305 V-6, 3-Speed Manual with 89,000 Original Miles in all around good condition for $500.

Still had a "New Truck" feel to it to boot when I drove it home.

But Bill, wasn't $295 like a pretty good sum for a 15 year old kid then?

It was, especially considering I only made $8 per week delivering newspapers and I was one of the lucky ones, as most kids under 16 didn't work. But I probably had that much saved up in cash, plus I had a '58 Nomad to sell to put towards it. I bought the '58 with a 348, 3-Speed soon after I turned 15 for $50, but it wouldn't pass inspection. I decided to sell it rather than put more money into it.

But although we make a whole lot more per hour now, it seems like our "Buying Power" was much stronger back then.

...the good 'ol days!!
