Anymore info? Is the steering column stock, transmission stock? If it is all original, I've never seen it any other place.

Re: neutral safety switch location?

Dads 68 GMC, still don't have all the info. The things we need to know to be able to help are:

Year, model, engine, transmission (manual or auto), stock, if modified, what mods has it had, etc.

I will assume your truck is auto... If it's running try to start in drive or reverse (make sure it doesn't take off) and it cranks, then you don't have a switch installed. If it doesn't then check to make sure you have backup lights... The switch controls both.

If you don't find the switch on the column, then it could be on the tranny (haven't seen one there though) or, as in the case of some newer manual shift trucks, activated by the clutch pedal so that you make sure you're not going anywhere before you start the truck..

Other than that, I'm lost... Let us know what you find...

Re: neutral safety switch location?

if it is unmodified, and originally an automatic, then the bottom of the column is the only place it would be.

ok,more info. the truck is a 68 gmc 4x4 350 converted to auto,turbo350. the stock 4 speed column had a nuetral safety switch on it. the closest column in the picture never did have a safety switch, it is out of a 71 suburban. the 2nd column in the pic. is a van tilt with the switch mounted 10" from the shift collar, which will be in the way of mounting it to the dash. I saw a faq on installing a switch on the column but what I dont know is how to make the notch in the inner tube, the outer tube will be no problem with a die grinder. thanks for any help.

Re: neutral safety switch location?

that closest column is a van unit, that's why there is no hole for the NSS where it is supposed to be.

Re: neutral safety switch location?

its crazy that the one doesn't have a NSS..it IS a van unit though... both the tilts you have there are.
Even though, it SHOULD have one in the same spot as the second one.

Re: neutral safety switch location?

Maybe - just a guess: Non-auto trans motor home or step-van or some other oddball van tilt usage ?

Re: neutral safety switch location?

The closest one does appear to be a motor home tilt for auto trans which would mean Turbo 400 trans w/switch on trans (?) The odd thing to me is that the green 4 speed standard trans column has a hole for the switch, and you stated it had a NSS, but those trucks only had a reverse light switch on the trans, and no nuetral safety switch that I've ever seen,( how would it work?). Perhaps they just punched all the column tubes on the assembly line...
