Somebody looked it up on line and said it was out of an early '70s 440 Mopar. I've back burner-ed the project for now but I'd like to know more about your carb for future reference. I never thought about using it on an L6 though. I think 500 CFM for a 296CuIn build: [292 @ .030- over = 296] is already too fat, but , heck, I got tired of always adjusting my Holley 390. After a 25 year run, it was shot... |
Re: Post Your Straight Six Pics!
To keep this Chevy related, the spec sheet with the rebuild kit for this carb shows that it was used on 1966 Chevrolet 327's. It was also used on 307, 327 and 350 Chevy Marine engines.
The Mopar 440 AVS had 1 11/16" primary and secondary bores. The 383, 340 carbs had smaller 1 7/16" primary bores. Depends on who you believe, but many list them as 625 and 750 cfm carbs. Edelbrock's cheap copies are listed as 500, 650 and 800. They don't list the bore or venturi sizes so I don't know how they compare. The one with the smaller primary and the flow regulated secondary does not have a problem with a 300 cu in engine from what I've seen. The secondary only flows as much air as the engine can handle. |

Too late to add pics to my previous post I guess.....here's a shot of the 230 in my '65 C10. She's backed by the SM420 "granny" 4 speed, and I assume 4.11 or higher gears. This was taken a week or so after I got the truck at the beginning of the year. Not much has changed; I cleaned up the battery, and a lot of the dust is gone from tuning and driving her. Other than that, this is how she sits today.

Re: Post Your Straight Six Pics!
I have good news for you.. that is not a 230 pictured, you have a 292!!!!! Your side covers are the 6" tall versions, and your fuel pump is located behind the motor mount on the pass side....

Re: Post Your Straight Six Pics!
hello I6 guys. im new and ignorant to em but very interested in swapping my 350 for a I6 in my 70 c20 in the future. just want to lean what i can about them. which one is the most popular and why? not interested in power really, just a dependable motor. does one motor have cheaper replacement parts over others? are the I6's taller then a sbc?

The 194, 215 (Pontiac), 230, and 250 were pretty much the same block with different bore and stroke. The 292 has a long stroke and corresponding taller block. 250s make acceptable power (torque) and are the easiest to find. Parts are cheap and they are all real easy to work on! |
Re: Post Your Straight Six Pics!
thanks for the quick response! so a 250 wouldn't have a problem running a edc and power steering? also could i use the power steering pump from my 350 on it? building custom brackets wouldn't be a problem.

Re: Post Your Straight Six Pics!
I finally have all the parts back for my 292. I just got the block back yesterday
http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y55...92block001.jpg I just got it out of the truck and onto a stand. My guy had a heck of a time getting the cam. I think Isky had to mine the iron ore first.:lol:and then the first one disappeared in the shipping so we had to go through the whole process over. I thought they would have mined enough iron for two at least:lol:. It's nothing special, I guess they were just out at the time. So I can start putting it all together now. :metal: |

It's a good stand, but I wish all 4 wheels would steer.
