Re: Yet another GMC build
Great work there are a lot of secret's do get upholstery just right. I know my brother is master upholster. He did a 29 roadster that won the AMBR award. He has been doing this for over 30 years, for example he sew's streemers (long threads) then pushes these with a long sewing needle into the foam through the back side to hold material with round plastic button things to give that contour look so the material wont look flat. He can build a convertible top with no pattern and installed in 8-10 hours. Your work is something you can be proud of and saying I did it feels good.

Looks more like a seat now. It stinks being a perfectionist. I've done much of the seat twice now and I still see the loose spots, the wrinkles, and the areas that pucker, but everyone else says it looks good and I need to shut up and get it in the truck. Now I just need help getting it in here...

my seats came back from my neighbor looking like the canckles of a 90 yr old woman sit in them for a bit, they will form to the cushions over time plus we're so used to looking at our trucks from 6 inches away, we see all the small stuff :D |

Seats in. It really makes the cab look smaller. I was waiting for my cup holders. They are the kind they use on poker tables but I had custom rings made to hold them in place that match the gauges.

Is that better? My home made smooth GM column did not work out. It is beeootiful but you can't, and I mean, CAN'T get the wires run down it. Kind of worthless without the turn signals. So I went with a cheap ebay chinese column and hope it works out...

And now the wheel. My father in law made the steering wheel so I started out with bare aluminum. I glued on some 1/4 inch closed cell foam for padding and held it in place with zip ties. They leave marks but if you wrap it tight enough the marks don't show. Then I made a dry run with vinyl to get the length and to mark my spoke locations with magic marker. Transferred that onto leather and started sewing. It seems that the leather needs to be 1.5 inches shorter and 1/2"narrower than the wheel to get the right stretch.

You need to tie two curved needles onto some nylon thread and then a ton of cross stitching. I started by sewing the spokes first to locate them and now I'm working my way through the hand grip. It's useful to have a slightly larger needle to open stubborn holes up if needed. The best way I found to make a thousand tiny holes perfectly spaced was to run the leather through the sewing machine without thread. (Just a really expensive leather punch.) After the first couple hours my fingers feel terrible. I started using my brand new mechanics gloves with finger guards and it's SOOOO much better. Will post pics when it's installed.

Wheel is in. I really just need the gas pedal mounted and the shift linkage installed and I could theoretically drive it around the block. (With no windshield it might get windy!)

First time it's been out of the garage in 3.5 years. Still needs alot of work but I'm getting there. It actually sits lower than I expected. Scraped the bumper twice getting out of the driveway. Didn't trim my inner fenders enough so when it smacks a bump it tags them. Ahhh...the joys of building old cars. Just wanted to prove it could move around by its own power.
