Gord,
Who did the sandblasting of your parts for you? It wasn't the same guy that did your frame was it? Mind me asking cost? |

1.5 hours work for them at just their shop rate. Well worth it veres using a wire wheel to try to get it clean enough to paint! |
Re: "The Ayatollah of Rusty Hole'a 1987 SWB 6.0 4L80E
As usual, thank you sir.
Do you have the name of the shop handy by any chance? Its very hard to find people who will sand blast sheet metal |

Well finally some time to do a bit on the truck...
Got the box back together and getting it ready for primer & going through the cab trying to smooth stuff out. More pics later this week. Slow going! Bright side is I picked up a better air compressor and a sand blasting cabinet for cleaning bolts and small parts. Got both on sale but the cabinet took a day to put together, darn Chinese picture directions!! ;-) |

Getting close to priming the truck parts....got to get rid of that surface rust first tomorrow.
Just for the record, this is what I'm using for primer: 1. self-etching on bare metal 2. medium build 2K 3. after block sanding, using the 2K as a sealer |

Since I had so much surface rust on the roof of my cab I have been focusing on getting it totally prepped and ready for primer this week.
Here it is sanded down and I degreased it last night and let it sit until this morning. This morning I hit the bare spots with self-etching primer and I will leave it sit for a few hours while I go get some supllies to work on the box later! |

Got a bit more done today....
For the pop-up gas fillers, I traced & cut out the fillers on sheet metal, cut it to fit, put a crimp around the filler plate so I could weld a nice finish line around it and have room to putty, I chose the location, cut out the box tie down inserts, slotted the hole so I could slide the inserts in, and welded, then mudded them in. Will insert the fillers after paint though! |

Finished!
No pics about how to weld...enough on the forum here already on that subject! Note too that you do have the choice to go from the bottom up with the filler through the hole in your insert plate. I didn't though because I wanted a slight lip around the gas hole in case I dropped the fuel hose and I didn't want it to chip the paint easily later on. |

Thanks!
Been busy with work lately so haven't been updating the build at all. I had to change the window regulators, one didn't work and the other one was slow, so thought may as well do them both now. There are alot of threads about doing this....basically take all the bolts out, unplug the power wires to the motor, spin the motor and the tracks around until you can fish it out. BEWARE, THE MOTOR AND TRACK HAVE A SPRING ON THEM SO IF YOU DON'T DRILL A HOLE THROUGH THE TRACK AND PUT A PIN IN IT TO KEEP IT FROM SNAPPING OPEN WHEN YUOU TAKE THE MOTOR OFF, IT WILL SPRING APART AND SCARE THE CRAP OUT OF YOU --- PLUS IT COULD TAKE OUT YOUR EYE AND PUT A DENT IN THE SIDE OF YOUR TRUCK!! One other thing, the bolts they give you with the replacement motors are crap. I drill out the holes a bit and used some bolts I had in the garage. the first pic shows the way I had to wrench them in to get them to fit. I needed to put the 2 bolts in the top of the motor where it sits above the lever mechanism first, then tightened up the 2 bolts that I could reach easy with the wreches...then come back and do the first two. If you are doing this, you will know what I mean. |

I then primered the truck. Two coats of 2k to start with everywhere.
I used etching primer on the bare metal bits first though. Since I was going to cut the jambs, inside the doors, the hinges and all the inside bits first, I concentrated on these parts especially: - two coats medium build primer - sand 320 then 400 - etch primer the sanded through spots - more medium build primer - more sanding with 400 - sealer coat x 2 Since these are the bits that are not going to be seen as much, I was a little forgiving of runs and dust specs. Overall the primer turned out well and it will hold fine until I am ready to spray the outside panels. |
