Re: Daddyjeep Hauler - 85 K30 crew cab short bed
I finally got all my welds ground down and seam sealed all the welds on the floor and basically everywhere inside the cab. Hopefully this weekend i can get all the body work done on the rockers and corner.

Nice work. I can't recall are you going to paint the whole thing or just repaired sections?

Re: Daddyjeep Hauler - 85 K30 crew cab short bed
I finally finished my rendering showing all the custom things I want to build for the truck. I am building the bumpers, making some sort of custom grill, and making a custom hood. The rendering also will be my final paint scheme.
I picked up another hood to start building my newer HD inspired hood for my favorite price...free. It had a little dent in the middle with some old bondo that was chipping off. I ended up cutting the bad section out anyway so that is not an issue. I took off all the paint to see how the hood was overall and aside from a couple small dings it is pretty good. It is hard to see, but I laid out some lines on where the different levels are going to end up. I am following the angle of the outer body line on the hood for all of the steps and will be raising the center 4" overall and the first step 2"...I think. I will mock things up to see how it looks before I make the side panels. I at least got the center piece cut out. I cut 10" out of the center of that to shorten it up front to back. This will create the opening for the ram air. The center is sitting on a couple 2x4's in the pic. Again, I am not sure on the overall height yet. Does anyone have any experience with ram air? I am wondering about driving in the rain. Is there typically anything done to prevent the water from getting to the air cleaner? |

Love the rendering. I'm sure that hood will turn out awesome.

Very cool hood idea. Cant wait to see what it turns out like.

I like the direction you are headed with your project. I have no clue on your ram air question but I'm sure someone will chime in.

Re: Daddyjeep Hauler - 85 K30 crew cab short bed
I used to have a Cervinni's ram air hood on my 97 powerstroke. The very first bad rain I drove it in after I got all the ram air functional, nearly hydro locked the engine. I ended up drilling drain holes in the ducts I had built. That wasn't enough, I had to angle the "floor" of the ducts toward the drain holes and that helped. That still wasn't enough and I had to put some screen over the duct. I used some from a lund grill I took off a wrecked truck. All of that finally kept it happy.

Thanks Diesel, that is the info I was looking for. I have some thoughts with some baffles of some kind and a drain.

One more rendering showing a straight on front view. I wasn't real busy at work today so I threw this together. :)

I love the hood idea...
I really wish I could make one like this for my crew cab I am building. http://i1223.photobucket.com/albums/...psyjh4zbrz.jpg http://i1223.photobucket.com/albums/...psh8eb4zbl.jpg http://i1223.photobucket.com/albums/...psfjqgds4g.jpg |

Re: Daddyjeep Hauler - 85 K30 crew cab short bed
I know my welding skills are no where near good enough. My friend has the skills though. However, it is quite a job to get him motivated to come weld anything. Maybe when I get closer to that point, we shall see.

I got a little more done on the hood. Still a long way to go.

Re: Daddyjeep Hauler - 85 K30 crew cab short bed
I got some side panels started for the hood and finalized the height. This is going to take me some hours to get this thing right. I already have some low spots where I need to cut my welds and try again. This thin material is every bit as challenging as I expected.
The corners are going to be a bit of a challenge too, but I will worry about that later after I get the main structure of things done. |
Re: Daddyjeep Hauler - 85 K30 crew cab short bed
I'm going to post this here so I can reference it later. It appears to be a pretty good cheap sound deadener/insulation.

Re: Daddyjeep Hauler - 85 K30 crew cab short bed
More welding and grinding last night. I got the second side panel trimmed and tacked in. I fixed one of the low spots in the first level only to develop two more as I was filling in tacks. The second level is much easier because I cut the sub structure out of the donor hood and tacked it to the bottom to support it. I may have to add some structure to the first level, of course I will have to do that from the hole in the hood now.
