Re: maxxy's 81 bagged c10 build

To be honest, I love the way the crossmember turned out, but I'm still runnin into issues with getting the steering all tied up. If I were to do it again, I'd probably just do a small z instead of the section crossmember. Thank you for the compliment though!

Re: maxxy's 81 bagged c10 build

I haven't got much done at all the last couple months. I've taken on a full time 55-60hour/week job. Working sucks. I don't how you "mature" people put up with it.

Plus, I've acquired a lady friend, who takes up all the rest of my waking time. Lol.*
Well in a slight update, I have painted most of my rear frame (behind cab). (no pictures)

And then I finally started tackling my steering today. Hopefully I can finish it in the next day or two.*
Since I sectioned my crossmember 1.25" I am also raising my steering 1.25". On the passenger side was easy, just redrill holes 1.25 higher. But on the drivers side, where the box bolts to, the frame is a weird shape.
http://i901.photobucket.com/albums/a...y/0ca60dd4.jpg
So I'm cutting out this section
http://i901.photobucket.com/albums/a...y/6cdfcac9.jpg
And moving it up the matching 1.25".*

this is the piece tacked in place.

This is an above view showing that stock steering shaft will work.*
http://i901.photobucket.com/albums/a...y/3a15be48.jpg

It's since been welded and I'm making a filler piece for the bottom. *Then I have to cut notches for the tie rods. NOTE: I did have to still notch the drivers control arm.
More to come...

i love how you left the original bottom peice of the frame to keep the contour right. i dont think ive ever seen anyone do that. its going to look great once you fill the gap!

I'm going to end up having to notch the bottom for steering arm clearance so I cant keep the contour completely. :/

Its not the lady friend thats keeping me from the truck, its school. haha
I started my first year at University of Oklahoma! I just got no time for fun!

It sucks knowing I'm so close to having it ready to drop in the motor. I guess I never uploaded this one. I'm a little farther along than this picture, but this is the most up to date photo I have for ya.http://i901.photobucket.com/albums/a...AAA8F4CB91.jpg

Re: maxxy's 81 bagged c10 build

dude thats the bomb...while your messing with the steering.... take your column out and lay the face of the steering wheel on grass and gently tap the rag joint end (drill the plastic plug out first). the column shaft will collapse giving you 1 1/2 more inches of room between you and the steering wheel in the cab. i did it to mine and now when i drive it feels way more natural. dont go more than 1 1/2. im not sure if the shaft would ever slide the other way if you went too far. also if you go more than 1 1/2 then you run into issues of it not fitting right near the dash. it is amazing what the 1 1/2 inches of extra reach gives you. way worth the effort and your already half way there

Re: maxxy's 81 bagged c10 build

but make sure it looks like it will work on your truck before collapsing.... since you would have to make sure the shaft still clears the control arm notches and anything else that isnt stock

Congrats on starting school! Now we'll understand if updates come a little more slowly. That studying stuff can be a real time hog! Best of luck and keep after it!

Looking forward to you getting the steering stuff worked out. Planning on doing this to my other truck but I'm not going bagged just lower than the static 6-8 extreme drop. Like static 7- 9 lol. Just raise my bed 3-4 inches and c notch the rear. Get us some updates!

I'd like to do this, but I think moving the whole steering column forward would make my angle steeper and also push the shaft down, closer to the arm, and I already can't afford to give up any clearance there.

Re: maxxy's 81 bagged c10 build

Did you move the steering linkage up because you had to from being low or do you think a static dropped truck would get away without needing it?

Re: maxxy's 81 bagged c10 build

I moved the steering assembly up because of the way I sectioned the crossmember. If I didn't move it up the same amount as the crossmember, my steering arms would hit the front of my lower control arms.

Im home for thanksgiving break!!!
Here's the steering box mount moved up with my steering arm notches welded in. Don't mind the blobby texture in the middle. I started to try to put a layer of bondo on to smooth out the grinder nicks and hammer scratches, but soon realized that part would be covered by the steering box. Lol
http://i901.photobucket.com/albums/a...88444AC183.jpg

Since then I put together all the steering, and bolted a lot of little things back up.

Got the front end all buttoned up except brakes.
I'm probably going to have to slightly tub the firewall... One thing leads to another I guess. :dohh:
Does anyone know what I can do to clean up the drivers side firewall and still be fully DD functional?

Started to get my rear end prettied up and painted. When I opened it up, I realized that I have 2.56 gears.... :dohh:

My truck has become kind of a collect-all of tools and random other things. Lol
