Re: 1980 Stepside Build... My first build thread
You can see in one of the photos above that the inside of the tailgate isn't painted yet. By the time it was dry enough to turn over and shoot the inside, it got too cold to paint. It's supposed to warm up here later this week, so I'm hoping to get it done then.

Re: 1980 Stepside Build... My first build thread
Great read. Thanks for the posts and the pictures. I dig your truck.
Didn't realize you guys had to deal with DEQ in Banks. Such a pain... So glad I have a '74! |
Re: 1980 Stepside Build... My first build thread
Yep. Total pain.
I don't think I will ever even consider a 1975 or newer project vehicle again. Just go pre-smog and do whatever i want. |
Re: 1980 Stepside Build... My first build thread
I just finished entering my order at Classic Industries! All of my interior parts and weatherstripping should be here this week, so I can get moving forward again next weekend.
Hope to have more pics to post soon! |

Put a new circuit sheet on my gauge cluster - but the brittle temp gauge needle broke off when i touched it. Guess I'll need to order one of those now. I also added a shift indicator that my truck didn't originally have.

Re: 1980 Stepside Build... My first build thread
I ended up working on the truck 20 hours over the weekend, and got a bunch of stuff completed. I replaced all of the mounting bolts for the rear fenders with stainless button head bolts, wired up the taillights, replaced the door locks and ignition tumbler with a new matched set (1 key!), replaced the turn signal lever, installed the drip rail moldings, replaced the front marker lenses, installed a new gas cap and washer bottle cap, and I'm not even sure what else at this point. It is all a bit of a blur now.
You can see from the photos that I have the new floor liner just laying in the cab. I had it spread out in front of the wood stove in my living room all weekend trying to get it to relax from its shipping state, but it still has some memory. I'm going to try and fit it tonight, but not looking forward to it. Could take quite a while to get it right, and I'm a bit nervous about trimming too much. Going to have to take it slow and cut a little at a time. All that's really left at this point is to install some dash trim, the floor liner, the seat, seat belts, and door weatherstrip. Then I can get some clear on the bed wood and finally start driving this thing. I'm hoping that we can take it to get our Christmas tree on Sunday! |
Re: 1980 Stepside Build... My first build thread
Fantastic progress, congratulation! The truck is coming out super nice.
Good luck on the flooring, you may want to take a look at this thread (starting at #206), it describes some of the challenges in installing what looks like the same type of rubber flooring. http://www.67-72chevytrucks.com/vboa...=636927&page=9 |
Re: 1980 Stepside Build... My first build thread
Thanks for the tip. I may just pick up a heat gun on my way home and see if that makes the install easier.

Re: 1980 Stepside Build... My first build thread

Re: 1980 Stepside Build... My first build thread
The floor mat is an Auto Custom Carpets piece that I bought from Classic Industries

Re: 1980 Stepside Build... My first build thread
Really nice work. I like your choice of interior color. Looks great with the blue.

Re: 1980 Stepside Build... My first build thread
Thanks - I'm probably going to have to re-dye the door panels as the "light saddle" door panels do not match the seat, or the light saddle dye that I bought. I was attempting to have all of the interior light saddle except for the dash pad, but as of right now I have three different shades of brown in the cab, and it's just not working for me. Going to put the kick panels in tonight and see how it all looks before I decide what to do.
