Since I have nothing to do until exhaust parts arrive, the little woman has been badgering me about participating in some way. So she is now busy on the truck. LOL http://images1.snapfish.com/23232323...467gd%3Bot1lsi http://images2.snapfish.com/23232323...%3C25%3Aot1lsi Chevy orange used to compliment the brown A little better then chevy red. I also milled the backs of the emblems so i could use trim tape on them. http://images2.snapfish.com/23232323...52825%3Aot1lsi |
Re: Project Reno - 72 cheyenne rebuild

Awesome! My hands are a bit shakey so i'd be forever doing that stuff LOL!

Re: Project Reno - 72 cheyenne rebuild
I haven't tried that. I'm not really crafty, but it gives me something to do so I don't get into trouble for taking the microwave apart to see how it works. I am interested in trying that though. It does need a little help leveling out. I'd be excited to hear of anything that helps out.

but it is spotty at best. The assembly manual has good pics but no real world measurements. I did finally find a diagram someone made with measurements. It is a little hard to read so i re-created it and a version for those that by chance convert their emblems to stick-on. So, I measured and taped up the fenders as a reference and to transfer to a paper template and flipped it for the passengers side. http://images1.snapfish.com/23232323...3Bd7gdddot1lsi http://images1.snapfish.com/23232323...f%3B693cot1lsi http://images1.snapfish.com/23232323...%3A349d8ot1lsi http://images1.snapfish.com/23232323...4%3Bde74ot1lsi http://images1.snapfish.com/23232323...3A339ee3ot1lsi Here are the diagrams for others to use. If I forgot something, let me know. They are fairly easy to modify. |

On the microwave disassembly, have you found a way for it to turn bacon into money? If so, I need a schematic. LOL Chris |
Re: Project Reno - 72 cheyenne rebuild
The emblems are looking good. I bought new ones. CHEYENNE 30. I found my collectors and gaskets this morning looking for my rear yoke. Now I'm trying to find the rear yoke.

Perhaps a new product under development. Announcing the new Mircowacon 300.
drop in your spare change and 30 second later enjoy some delicious bacon. :) BTW, after several days, the paint is still not entirely dry. I would strike it up to humidity, but yesterday was fairly dry. I think I am going to have to start over and get some of the hardener. I am also going to thin it with turpentine. This way it will flow a little bit more. Less painting and more pouring. Chris |
Re: Project Reno - 72 cheyenne rebuild
Well, still no exhaust parts. Shouldn't be too much longer. I have been going over the truck with a discerning eye to see if I missed anything. Of course I noticed a few minor things that needed to be addressed. First was when i had my brake cables made they have a little slack in them. I looked for stabilizers that would work but nothing that was a great solution. I made some brackets to remedy this
along with some industrial line clamps I found on Mcmaster Carr http://images2.snapfish.com/23232323...%3C25%3Aot1lsi The line clamps come with a weld plate the had 2 nut incorporated into it. This is it welded, painted and ready for assembly. http://images1.snapfish.com/23232323...f%3Bh67hot1lsi http://images1.snapfish.com/23232323...3B5%3A75ot1lsi I used a standard u-bolt plate and mounted the brackets to the leaf springs next to the leaf clamp. http://images1.snapfish.com/23232323...6%3B55i7ot1lsi Done http://images1.snapfish.com/23232323...%3C%3B4dot1lsi Next item was the Ram air intake. I decided to just buy everything despite not needing it now. Screw it I said!! OK, the actual story is I have a few big jobs coming which helps loosen the pocket a bit. So here it is installed along with my bracket for carrying the weight of it all. http://images1.snapfish.com/23232323...8%3A83geot1lsi http://images1.snapfish.com/23232323...3B%3C75hot1lsi As for the emblems, well, they never dried completely. I had to order some hardener from 1 shot and will redo the emblems when it arrives. We are going to try and thin the paint and use a needle/syringe to flow the paint onto the emblem not paint it on. This way it will be perfectly smooth. We'll see, but i suspect that may work. I am using the old emblems as a test because I just received word that my custom emblems are almost done. Having them made by billet badges. here is the proof. Couldn't be happier. http://images1.snapfish.com/23232323...5%3B5%3Bot1lsi This will go beneath the front marker lights where the 8/350 badge used to go. it is a little larger then stock, but should look nice. The LSX logo will be painted chevy orange to match the Cheyenne emblems. |
Re: Project Reno - 72 cheyenne rebuild
Very NICE, custom badges there man. I love'm.
|
Re: Project Reno - 72 cheyenne rebuild
Nice work in the e brake cable brackets!
|
Re: Project Reno - 72 cheyenne rebuild
What is the plan to make the LSX logo. It would be cool to CNC them on mill and paint the letters.

To do the glovebox and ashtray faces. I took so much of the Cheyenne trim off this thing seems wrong to not put some back in. It would match the lighter brown interior accents as well. Any opinions on that??? I am sure a lot of guys don't like that I didn't go back stock, but I want to do this well. |
Re: Project Reno - 72 cheyenne rebuild
Everything looks great!
for the wood, and i find this hard to say, as normally i would vote a hard no, but i think with your paint color it would look really neat inside. also, to heck with the ones that don't like modifications. i agree some folks would be better served to leave it stock, but when the mods are planned out and executed well, it only make the truck better. i am excited to see this one outside in a full body shot. if i had to guess you might be excited to see how the rear tires look after they turn into a minor white cloud. i know i am with mine.... |

Hi Chris, What year truck did the Fuel Door come from, and where did you purchase your fuel tank?
Steve |
Re: Project Reno - 72 cheyenne rebuild
Hey Steve, the tank is made by Boyd's welding. Very nice product!
The gas door is a ford truck gas door. The advanatage to these is the vent tube is inside the filler tube. I think the year is late 80's early 90's Chris |

Re: Project Reno - 72 cheyenne rebuild
Well, finally nailed down a date on the exhaust parts. This week everything comes in. Ahhh yeah, finally!!
In the mean time, back to emblem painting. So I ordered some 1 shot 4007 hardener. The first time these were painted they never fully dried even after about a week. http://images2.snapfish.com/23232323...3A934%3Bnu0mrj This stuff is supposed to help it dry and also thinned the paint a bit which helped our technique. I say our, but really the little lady re-painted these again. We decided to use a needle and syringe. We pre-mixed the paint and hardener in a small plastic cup. 5 teaspoons of paint and 1/2 teaspoon of hardener. She sucked the paint into the syringe then put on the needle. Then she squirted the air out. http://images1.snapfish.com/23232323...9c93ef37ot1lsi She slowly pushed the plunger to let paint flow and it self leveled. Worked great I think and no brush strokes. http://images1.snapfish.com/23232323...85%3A%3Aot1lsi http://images2.snapfish.com/23232323...3A234%3Bnu0mrj Now just need to see how they dry. |
Re: Project Reno - 72 cheyenne rebuild
that looks fantastic.
Have fun with the exhaust, i've been doing that same chore myself. |

I checked again this morning and they could go on the truck now. Much better cure then before. We used an old emblem to test this technique and it also works great to check the paint cure. If I really press down on the paint it will make a small fingerprint impression, but it is easily smoothed out. When we paint the billet badge pieces I will probably use a bit more hardener. I would say a full teaspoon of hardener for 5 teaspoons of paint. It doesn't take more than say 10 minutes to do one emblem so no need to extend cure time really. Chris |
Re: Project Reno - 72 cheyenne rebuild
nice touch, that's for sure =0)
|
Re: Project Reno - 72 cheyenne rebuild
Those turned out really well Chris. I don't know anything about syringes, but did you have to buy one with an oversize needle (inner diameter) or hole in order to shove paint through it? I'm guessing that the ones I get to inject marinade into turkeys would be a little too big
|
Re: Project Reno - 72 cheyenne rebuild

 For those that want to try this method, here is the actual syringe we used. The 22G is the needle opening I think and the last number 1 1/2" is the length of needle. The syringe is 3ml. http://images1.snapfish.com/23232323...d899dfi5ot1lsi Looks like they are readily available online, but may be in large quantities. Good luck! Chris |
Re: Project Reno - 72 cheyenne rebuild
Those look great! :metal:

Re: Project Reno - 72 cheyenne rebuild
I have bought syringes on line several times. I use then as glue guns for building RC air planes. the work great.

Re: Project Reno - 72 cheyenne rebuild
Looking great! Glad your almost done.... I need help I know you want to come to the left coast!;)
