Those steering braces really take up some real estate, any news on the TC issue? Buddy of mine has been having some issues with TCI also.

TCI shipped me a new TC and front seal on my dime. Then I have to return the one that has issues for warrenty. The biggest problem I have now is Summit Racing advertises the transmission to handle 575 horse power. TCI told me 350 max. So I'm going to put the tranny in and get the car home as it has been sitting at my nephews shop for 5 week swapping out the engine and trans. Based on how this engine ran it is the most radical engine I have had. it is so loud I don't think I will be able to drive it on the street with out getting a ticket and I have duel exhaust out past the rear bumper with magna flow mufflers X2. I might have to swap out the camshaft to tame it down. I should have the new TC end of the week and get the car drivable this week end.

I took a couple of pictures of the front and rear axle looking down at the bump stops. my axles are forward of the bump stops about 1.5".

My rear axle is 1.5" or so forward also. I only have 4" shackle flip kit.
Have you checked the actually wheelbase measurement? should be 127" correct? I need to remember to check that tonight.

I forget my wheel base. I stretched my frame 30" for the crew cab. I thing I'm about 157"

That's the meanest 318/390 I've ever heard, cool! Chassis looks like your ready for the crew cab to go on for the last time? Lucky Ducky!

Hello Mr. D your welcome. I'm sorry I could not spend more time the other day but I had to work on my house do to the contractor having his head up his A**. Hard to be live that they tried twice to install door frame trim and I had to do it my self Saturday. The house painting should be done Tuesday then I get to move back in and get back on the truck.

I checked out your build on the Longhorn very cool. I wish I could have found a Cummins or Durmax for my truck. everybody in Ca want a million dollars for oil burner.

Thanks. I've been seeing all you guys going LS and I've almost been thinking of doing a burb with one. But I have to finish some old projects first. Haha:mm:

After looking a little closer at your header issue the only difference i see is that i went with pacific fabs cross member and the motor mounts may set up a little higher.

Yes that right. The DD mount I used set the engine about 1.5" lower and caused a lot of issue with headers.

I agree on the noise Once I get it drivable I will have to look at what to do about the noise. I have my finger crossed getting it running in the next 2 week. I have a nother transmission on the way this time installing 727. only bummer is I have to have drive shaft made to fit.

Looks good. After all this work on my trucks crossmember I think I am going this route. Did you get the relocation kit from vintage air with the compressor?
And nothing beats home... Glad your back home!

Yes the pump and brackets are a kit from VA.

I got some work done today and welded up my headers so they fit. I wish I did what I did on the left side for the right. left side I cut the why pipe loose and rotated it in about 3/8" and was able to grind the piece I cut out and reuse it. Now if I can just find the collectors for the headers I could start the exhaust

Thanks. At first I made it seam more difficult in my own mind that it turned out. I happy with how it looks. Just have to grind down the welds and clean them up.

Nice job on the headers. Such a shame they had to be cut, but whatchagonnado?
They fit now. Can't wait to see the body all straight and ready to go on chassis.

Re: 71 4X4 Frame off Restoration

I found my exhaust collectors on Monday while looking for the rear drive shaft yoke and started working on the exhaust this week. I bought an 2.5" exhaust kit from Summit from Magna Flow and it does not fit the headers to the back T-case what so ever. I ordered some tubing and bends from Summit and hopefully the tubing will be here by Friday as I have 4 day week end I can get some work done. Friday afternoon my nephew and I are going to fire up my car finish breaking in the cam and hopefully drive it around the block. then I have the get the front end aligned.

DWilbur 05-21-2015 08:45 PM

Re: 71 4X4 Frame off Restoration

Just got confirmation that Summit order will be delivered Friday by end of day.

Mr. D 05-21-2015 09:00 PM

Nice. Just in time.
So between the Sattelite tranny swap and the truck exhaust fab you should have no problem keeping busy this weekend.
BTW - do you have a name for your truck build?

Great fab work. I've never seen a suburban turned into a crew cab truck but it looks like it's coming together nicely. Is there a reason you decided not to go with a diesel power plant or at least a big block? Or is this truck more of a cruiser? Either way it will look sharp when it's done. Do you have a color in mind for when it hits the paint booth?

Nice work on your headers, and congrats on being back in your house!
