This is the idea I have for the arm...
After a few attempts of trying to get a shape I liked this is what was the result. 2nd pic is a shot up in place.. |

Pic #1. After the layout of piece, scribe and finally drilled and chamfer the holes. (went with 7 holes rather than 5) I used 3/16" plate for the arm to make it Beefy looking..
Pic #2. After the cutting and cleanup was done.. Till next time. Mark.. |
Re: "Project Orangepeel" 52 A.D
That flows nicely! What did you use to cut out the shape?
|
Re: "Project Orangepeel" 52 A.D
You have great ideas!!
|
Re: "Project Orangepeel" 52 A.D
A.D and Kees thank's guys!!
To cut the shape I used the Band saw. followed by a carbide bit and then belt sander... |
Re: "Project Orangepeel" 52 A.D
Nice Work!

Last 2 shots...
1st of arm after some clean up and mounted in place. 2nd of the mockup mirror. (still have to figure out the mount for mirror to arm) This build will slow way down do to customer projects I will be pulling into the shop. (Mine will go to basement) for the time being... I will post some small things as I get them done to share with you Guys... I will also be starting a new Build thread for the 67 GMC stepside I'm working on for a costomer... Mark... |
Re: "Project Orangepeel" 52 A.D
Mirror arm looks really good! Really glad you have customers... though their projects will get in the way of updates on this cool project.
Looking forward to the 67 build...please put the link in your signature line. |
Re: "Project Orangepeel" 52 A.D
WOW amazing metal work!! The fit and finish work go way beyond what a 52 ever had. Great work :metal:
|
Re: "Project Orangepeel" 52 A.D

Here is a small update on the arm and mirror...
I ordered a new mirror from LMC and was kinda bummed out when it showed up. (it has this black plastic ring around the mirror) If you remove the plastic their is a gap all around the case and mirror (and super sharp) Anyways Enough :blah: Pic #1. Is of a connector nut 10-24 and An Acorn nut that I Tig welded together Pic #2. After it was all welded.. This is what will become the mount for the new mirror to screw into.. |

Pic #1. I started to shape it some to give it kinda a "bullet" look...
Pic #2. After some sanding,smoothing etc... |

Here is two pics of the piece welded to the arm...
Some may notice the arm's shape is different, It had to be shortened 1 1/2" do to it hanging to low in the windshield, so it's not as cool looking as before but still something different!!! |
Re: "Project Orangepeel" 52 A.D
Creative and slick!
|

Here is a few last shots of mirror/arm project..
I still am not completely sold on the plastic ring around the mirror!! (if removed it reveals a gap and VERY sharp edge) Thoughts? |
Re: "Project Orangepeel" 52 A.D
The bullet mounts looks really good. Nice idea and work.
Don't know the plastic ring will be that noticable once the glass is in. Metal rounded edge would look better...match the color of the dash maybe? |
Re: "Project Orangepeel" 52 A.D
Now if you'd done it in stainless .... you could have polished it up to a "mirror" like finish ...
Either way nicely done. |
Re: "Project Orangepeel" 52 A.D
Yeah, maybe I'm over thinking it....The metal around the mirror looks like something is missing!

Re: "Project Orangepeel" 52 A.D
Thank's R46!! The stainless would have been nice but no way of cutting stainless that thick in the shape I was going for...(Don't have a plasma yet so all with bandsaw or cutting wheels)

There was another idea I had been thinking of...
This involves the Visor, I will be "V" butting the windshield for a cleaner look. so in order to keep the visor it will need a mount to keep it from flying off the truck. So this short update involves the making of my new mount.. Pic #1. Is the template for the arm for the mount.. Pic #2. cutting out on band saw.. |
Re: "Project Orangepeel" 52 A.D
3 Attachment(s)
Pic #1. rough cut of the arm, and fit, trim etc..
Pic #2. It looked sad with no holes..So I put a few in it to dress it up a bit. Pic #3. Showing the small plate that was welded to the arm and will bolt to the cab. (will drill holes for flange nuts) so arm can be removed as needed |
Re: "Project Orangepeel" 52 A.D
those two pieces compliment each other well, nice touch.

Re: "Project Orangepeel" 52 A.D
Nothing to jump up and down about lately, but I was able to get a few hrs in on Sat. on my dash, doing a bit of clean up and spot weld as needed. (No pics sorry) getting it ready for final metal finish/texturing before clear...
Been fairly busy with shop projects and helping out a friend on his 49 F*&d truck...we cut the stub that was on it (drove like a pickle wagon) And installed a S-10 front stub over the past week and trying to get it ready for the show season.. Hope to get some stuff done on mine and get some more updates.. Mark... |
Re: "Project Orangepeel" 52 A.D
Customers cars, friends project, your truck...when do you sleep?:)
Looking forward to seeing the dash done with clear...have been going back and forth on painting or leaving the 35 Coupe in bare steel ...and don't believe their is a real good way to protect the steel from corrosion if left unpainted. |
Re: "Project Orangepeel" 52 A.D
Your right on that one...I was on the fence about doing bodywork and paint on the dash/interior as well.
with all the really small areas that are hard to get to I figured it would be a bit easier to do in bare metal/clear.. As far as the sleep thing I get plenty haha, I should be putting in More time in the shop to finish thing's up lol.. Quote:

Ok, boy's here is an update for you...
Pic #1. I finally had a bit of time to work on the dash. I sprayed it with encapsulator first.. Pic #2. Then with satin black... Pic #3. Then painted all the gauge pods on the inside.. Pic #4. after I did my texturing and ready for clear.... The texturing was a pain in the Butt, do to the small areas so I ended up having to make it very random... The remaining portions of the dash were done with a DA sander and 36 grit paper.. |

Pic #1. After clear was sprayed...
Pic #2. The dash set back in place to see how it looks.. Pic #3. No light on for a diff. look... Pic #4. With 3 gauges set in place... Give me your thoughts...... Mark... |
Re: "Project Orangepeel" 52 A.D
Looking good Reaper, looking good. I've got to admit, I enjoy metal work but I've got no style. I can make things work but they look functional and don't have any style to them. Your stuff has style.
