Good news on your daughter! I've got twins about to start drivers ed this Summer, that should be fun. As for the burb, you and Mike amaze me, the ingenious ideas you guys have come up with are really impressive. Keep up the good work and the good posts. Greg.

Glad everyone is ok. Thank God for modern safety equipment! Guess we need to figure out how to put airbags in these things, huh? ;)

Good news on the Burb schedule! What's your timeline?

Thanks Greg, two at once, I don't envy you. Courtney, my daughter is very level head and very dependable. I'm confident in her (she learned how to drive witha stick shift and drove it for almost a year), it's just all the other drivers out there that really worry me. It just goes to show you, know matter how safe you are, if some one else does something stupid, accidents can still happen. I think she learned a good lesson about paying more attention to other drivers on the road. Thanks for the props on the Burb! It's always cool when your concepts end up coming out as cool as you planned.

Thanks Mike, other than the cars getting crunched, it couldn't have turned out any better. Now the only issue will be the insurance companies, they will probably say the car can be fixed, but I don't want it back. I know there are some good repair companies out there, but the stygma place on a car by carfax nowadays, I probably couldn't give the car away. I guess we'll see.

As for the Burb, if we can have it painted by the end of July, I think I can get it put back together. I only have a few more big parts to buy, a/c, EFI harness, and a bunch of smaller misc stuff.... I'll keep you posted.

Thanks Eric, I'm sure it will work out.

Well before all the excitment yesterday evening, I actually got a little bit done on the Suburban. I had planned on installing a set of bear claw latches in the tailgate. Then the other day I was helping my buddy work on a late model Chevy truck tailgate and decided I liked the way the latches on it looked better than the bearclaw ones. Here's some pictures of the install of the drivers sided. As soon as I finish the passenger side, then the body's coming off the frame and going on a rotissierre, :metal:.

Nice, but curious why? I thought about it for the one-piece but the stock latches work just fine. If it's not broke... I'm sure you have a good reason ;)

It will definitely look more factory than the bearclaw's.

Mine never really latched very well (maybe it was me not adjusting them properly, :o ). I've modded the tailgate so much, I figured what the heck. Plus, I've got a couple weeks until we'll be ready to put it on a rotissierre, :metal: .

Bring it on over. I would sure hate to mess up that nice white paint, though :D.

Great work...Very impressed with your detail. It would have been so easy to leave certain things but you took the time to do it right the first time! Congrats on a fine ride! John

looks great....i gotta know - how do you make those long ass welds without warping the metal? looks like you're running solid beads and all.

Believe me I've warped my share of metal on this project, :( . However on this, I'm using pretty thick metal (14 gauge I think) for the pieces I welded in. It may look like solid line of weld, but it is mostly a series of small tack welds. The thicker metal definitely helps. I did let it cool down a little after doing a series of tack welds. A 4" grinder and a rolox disc with 36 grit has been my best friend on this project, :metal: .

Latches and cables are finished. I moved the bottom pivot point of the tailgate cables to take advantage of the factory cable attachment points on the new latches. I also moved the top pivot point to get the tailgate level when down.
