Well ive been trying to keep up some progress...I've got most of the drivetrain done..I've been waiting on a 3 lever shifter boot to get here so I can finish it up..the IH has 3 levers and a shifter stuck thru the floorboard..these shifters never had boots on them..all they had was flat rubber with slits in it for the lever movement..
So I've been working on the valve cover adapters...here's the progress so far...I started with some 1/4×6 alum flat bar...I traced the outline of the valve and cut it out...then I cut out the center to fit snuggly over the LS valve cover..they will sit on the lip of the LS valve cover..

Here the adapters are on the valve covers in place to check for clearances..
I cut the inside hole so that it fits snuggly over the LS cover..

I had to make a bushing for my transfer punchs to mark the valve covers holes to the aluminum..this holds it centered in the hole..the punch tips kept the punch higher than the vc hole.so this solved that issue

Here's the valve covers mounted up on the plates...
I'm using 12pt stainless bolts to hold em in place..

Here's how I did the plate hold downs...simple brackets bent out of some 1/8" flat stock..
I'll have to take them to work to weld the brackets to the adapters..just to keep things from moving around...
Coils will be relocated to the rear of the engine..

Re: Columbus..the 1957 IH 4x4..

I'll be painting the valve covers the same color as the body color red..I also had the IH script made in silver mettalic for them...maybe it'll look ok when done...

That looks really nice, and it should have people trying to figure out what's going on. I like it!

Thanks old57...I'm curious to see how the IH diehards take it....some of those guys are over the top purists and would tar and feather me for it..(If they could)...but most of those are all 100% scout people..then there are some IH guys that are more accepting though..it seems the trucks get cut a bigger break than a scout...

If you ever saw Aaron Kauffmans show, were he built a scout, the expert they brought in is Jim (a IH scout historian)...he joked about choking Aaron with his beard for cutting up a scout...but he later admitted the scout he cut up was to far gone to restore

I've also been working on making a 3 bolt LS throttle to Holley 4150 adapter..
Started with a piece of 1/2×6×6-1/2 piece of aluminum..first I bored the center out on the lathe..not having a mill handy I had to resort to a bandsaw to cut the outer shape...then I transferred all the holes over and drilled em out...I also had to make some gaskets for both sides...still have to mount the map sensor...it'll go where the -x- is on the throttle..and then into the plenum..

I hear ya about the purists. I used to have a couple of Studebakers that I did a bunch of custom stuff to. The local Studebaker club absolutely despised me, haha.

That's a great idea on the adapter plate. I really like what you've done with this truck.

I got a buddy with a 49 ford p/u with a amc engine and dodge drivetrain...he gets snubbed for it...some people...
I'm stealing all this adapter stuff from dayj1's build...he's already done a setup like this..

Also since the IH valve covers will have the LS oil fill buried, I added a oil fill to the valley cover...it's a holley brand weld in ...I had to add a IH sticker to it though...

Mongo

Stellar approach, and execution on those valve covers. Strong idea, as well as strong work. No matter what we builder/modifiers do to our projects someone will inform you in detail how badly you destroyed value as well as authenticity.

Fandamtastic. keep on keepin on!!!!

Nutty and getting worse...Case

Very nice work- you're great at details. Anyone who complains should be given a ride- this will be so much better than a stock binder

I know what you mean about the Studebaker people. I had a friend who had a 51 Studebaker resto-mod and he said some of the old Studebaker people wouldn't sell him parts if they knew it wasn't stock. He has a 53 hard top he's working on now.

I'm enjoying this build. Lot's of good work going on.

In Alabama we can run vintage plates ...so I had this made...it's embossed like they used to be yrs ago...I think it turned out great...

Looks great! Can you run that plate?

mongocanfly 11-19-2018 11:41 PM

Re: Columbus..the 1957 IH 4x4..

Sure can Doug..in Alabama it falls under vintage vehicle tag..you can use any tag with the yr of manufacture....

That's cool! Where did you find that? Can they do any state?

I want a couple personalized "california black plates" and maybe one from NY (where I grew up) to hang on the wall, but all I've been able to find is a "flat print" reproduction.
