Re: 64' K10 Project Long Bed

Les--I just re-read through your build and i already asked how wide your ft springs are.--- 2 1/2". still would like to know what the difference is between 60-63 and 64-66 shackle's.

Kimble,

Photos of the 64' front spring rear shackle parts are below, along with measurements. Looks like the 64's are about a 1/4 inch longer/wider, then 61's.
o pin overall length is 5 inches;
o bushing overall length is 2 1/2 inches;
o bushing OD is 0.868"; and
o pin OD for bushing threads is 0.657"

Also a couple of repeat photos of how it all goes together and new parts used, for others reference.

Are the 61' parts the same except for length? Looks like the extra length is in additional threads that go in the bushing.

Les--the bolt with threads like the shackle pins, is that the front of the spring pin? Mine is just a bolt (has the grease hole) and it goes through a bronze bushing thats pressed into the spring eye. looks like this is the difference, as the spring shackle at the rear looks the same.

Kimble,
Will post some photos of the 64' front spring connection parts. I think the answer is yes.

Re: 64' K10 Project Long Bed

sorry to keep bothering you Les about this. I would say the front spring rear shackle's are the same all years 60-66.

Kimble,

No problem, will post photos of mine. Agree, they are likely the same.

Kevin,

The photos of the steering gear box, pitman arm, steering arm attached to Dana 44, and steering linkage- between pitman arm and steering arm. The third photo shows the collapsable steering column for safety, along with universal joints that help with the offset of newer steering gear box.
The adapter plate is from CaptainFab.

A few more. The last two photos show the steering linkage angle being close to that of the front spring.

Nice pics. Looks great. Did you reuse your steering linkage or buy new? I'm working on the same conversion. Just wondering if it's worth reusing my old linkage or if replacing is worth it. Not sure what to look for to see if the tie rod ends are in good shape. I assume they are not rebuildable either.

Kevin,
Using original steering linkage for now, seems tight, will confirm once truck all back together? Also, this is a 78' Dana 44.

Re: 64' K10 Project Long Bed

I gotcha Les. I guess I meant are you using the original
Linkage from the 78 Dana you acquired. Everything looks great. I'll be doing the same mod later this week. Thanks for doing all the leg work and giving a good record of everything.

Re: 64' K10 Project Long Bed

On another note....looking through your thread for the umpteenth time, I read through the part you spoke about your wheels. I have done the same conversion you are currently doing now. I have a Dana 44 out of a 77 K10. I placed my stock 65 K10 steel (3 hump) steel wheels over the caliper and it clears just fine. Doesn't seem like I'm going to need the infamous 4 hump wheels. Did you get anymore insight on this subject????

Re: 64' K10 Project Long Bed

Kevin,

Using the original steering linkage from the newer Dana 44.
On the wheels, yes, the original 16" wheels work, with the disk brake Dana 44 front axle ( they should also work the the corporate 10 bolt too). Should find the conversion pretty easy and amazing how this stuff interchanges. Spent most time, on front mounting brackets for the sway bar. Tried to make this look kind stock.

Plainred 65, thanks for the complement, my grandson and I are having fun doing it.

Just got the old box off my 65. Noticed a reinforced plate on the back side of the frame rail. Wondering if it's stock or something added by previous owner?

Re: 64' K10 Project Long Bed

Kevin,

The 64' does not have an addition like that in the steering box area, on the frame.
Not meaning any thing bad, however, welding does not look like factory welding in general.

Re: 64' K10 Project Long Bed

That's what I figured. Welding looks pretty bad. So far I've got the power steering pump bracket with ps pump all mocked up. Tomorrow I will mock up the gear box using all of your measurements. Next will be the hydroboost, master cylinder, hoses, and brake lines. Thanks for being so thorough on your thread. You and Captain Fab have been awesome with your help. Please let me know if I can help with anything.

Post for Kevin on how, the collapsable steering column from Borgason is connected to original steering shaft. Photo shows how it is shaped into a "D", for connecting to universal joint. Their is more on this around post #138.

Fan Clutch

Doing a little searching on the fan clutches used on 65' and 66' ser. 10 thru 30 trucks, with HD Cooling/Rad., and air conditioning. Below is a copy of one page for 1.050 Clutch Assy.- stud. Engine Air Fan.

Shows two different designs, 65' with design 1 ( 6" DIA.) part number 3862159; and 65 and 66' with a design 2 ( 7 1/8" DIA.) part number 3883158. Look like 65' had both designs, and 66' uses 2 nd design
