You can use steel wool to make the look better, but once the rust has broken through the chrome surface it can never be repaired. They will look better, they will never look new.If it were me I would save the energy and have them powder coated.

Here's a video that describes them both. I bought some rough looking but straight stainless steel dog dish hubcaps for my 69'er and bought this stuff to clean them up. Haven't tried them yet.

I've read in these forums that steelwool will embed little fibers of steel and cause more issues. The suggestion is to use a brass brush.

i cleaned one of the chrome rims up for the most part with one of the brushes that you put in a drill and it did a good job of knocking the gnarly stuff off. the steel wool causing more issues is actually because of disimilar metals reacting with one another. in the navy we aren't really allowed to use brushes on aircraft due to the possibility of the metals reacting with one another and causing more corrosion then what was cleaned. but brass will work better than a steel brush. just make sure to wipe down the area after using a metal brush and use something to prevent the corrosion from reforming like clear paint.

There's lots of brass brushes at home depot over with the welding equipment.

Have you tried the tin foil and coke yet? I used to have a set of those wheels on an el camino and that was the ticket. wad up a piece of the foil and use it like a brillo pad. Im told its harder then the rust but softer then the chrome so it scrubs off the rust but doesn't damage the chrome.

Yea, I tried it but didnt do very good. Unless I used the wrong type of foil. Oven cleaner and copper steel wool worked better.

I cleaned up my set of of rims with naval jelly, a garden hose, and some steel wool...went from being covered in rust and dirt to shiny chrome in about 2 hours. I didn't take any before or after pics so I don't have any picture references sorry.

The S100 is by far the best chrome cleaner/polisher I have ever found. You can usually buy it at Harley shops.

I see that alot on here, but I've tried it and it's absolutely false. The tin foil scratched up my chrome wheels- it put fine scratches in the clear.

Dont know if your done with the wheels but a friend at work took alot of rust off a old set of chrome valve covers i gave him with red dye diesel fuel.

If the wheels are pitted with rust to the point that they just don't polish up to your satisfaction. What if you polished the outer chrome ring part by the tire and left it chrome. Then scuffed up and painted the flatter center part. Say, semi gloss black. With new chrome lug nuts it might really look like new wheels? maybe? Just a thought.

Yea, I think that would work as a back up plan. I think the that center ring is removeable also. Those are screws that holds that center ring to the actual rim.
