Nice build and info, guys. Any reason this wouldn't work on a stepside?

Mine is a stepside. Works fine.

Cool idea - i like the license plate fill a lot better too...

I'm currently doing a similar install of a 68 roadrunner tank. Its a longer narrow tank (would fit between the rails), wheras the camaro tank is wider. It might not work for shortbeds though, as it is longer. I'm curious to see yours (and mine!) with the bed back on.

I'm going to run into a problem with my sending unit being wrong though (73-10 ohms) dodge versus chevy (0-90)... I'll have to deal with that later - modify the sending unit or aftermarket gauge...

i'm assuming that this type of gas tank relocation would not allow the use of a trailer hitch like this (http://sitepro12.sitepro.com/masterl..._13028_INS.pdf). what do you think?

Any tank would have to fit between the rails for it to work with a hitch.

Here are a couple of pics with the bed bolted in. No clearance issues.

Re: 69 Camaro Gas Tank Install

I would think so. You would just need to do a good mock up to figure out how much of a spacer you need. That is the key to making it work.

The only thing I might do different is the license plate door. It looks like you have the spring loaded one that when you let go would pop back up. Some models have a break-over point so that once opened they stay in that position until you nudge them back closed. I forget the exact model of car but I pulled a couple on my last junk yard trip. Might make filling up a little easier for you.

Re: 69 Camaro Gas Tank Install

I totally agree. If you remember the model/year where you picked up the license plate holder that stays open pass it on. I would change mine out too. Looks like I may be spending an afternoon at the wrecking yard!

If I remember right they were from a mid to late 80s Caprice, Pontiac Parisienne, Olds Delta 88, etc. I am positive they were from GM sedans at very least. Here are some pics. Notice how the hinge breaks over and stays in place. They could be mounted up or down. I plan to use mine for hidden hitch purposes. Incidentally, these pics are of the backside, the license plate side is face down.

I'm down for one of these. I am going to see if I can find one. I mentioned to one of the other guys that the hinged door flips up and kind of gets in the way. This would certainly fix that issue.

Glad I could help. If you do find one report back and confirm what model it came from. That way the rest of the world can know from now on. :c2:

I had a '90 Cadillac Fleetwood brougham, the fullsize caddy. it had the flip down plate holder that held itself down. They made those cars til '92.

Great thread I am thinking about this over the $500 aluminum ones that mount in the bed.

thanx so it wud probably be slightjly difrent because of the diferent bumper. you use the 2by3 metal tubing right?

Re: 69 Camaro Gas Tank Install

Yes. I used wood blocks to mock it up in 1 inch increments until I found the right height for my application.

Ok Guys. I went to the yard today and picked up a new license plate holder. It came off a 92 Caprice (old cop car). Works awesome. Thanks for the heads up on this one. Here are some pics and a shot of the tank from up my driveway and from the side.

Well I was right about the model of car but wrong on the year model. Glad it worked out for you. Looks like the tank swap in general turned our very nice!

Any idea on using this setup on a chrome bumper? I'd hate to fork over the $$ for chrome and then cut a hole in it.
