Cool find. They are rare indeed. Never seen a set in a suburban before. However, since they are kinda toasty, there worth isn't any greater than regular fawn seat cores. Check the factory brochure below.

Yeah kinda toasty, but great templates to have recovered.

I thought of this thread as soon as I spotted them.. They belong to a friend. He's doing a pro-level build so they'll end up with custom upholstery. I'll get him to save the skins for templates.

Q for the 3-row burb guys; Aside from the arm rest and mounting, is the narrow 2nd row seat the same as the driver's seat?

Ask your friend if he knows anything about the sub they came from. What color was the exterior?, was it highly optioned?, and so on. It helps to get a feel for what kind of customer ordered the red seat option for their truck.

Re: The rare "Red Seat"

Pretty sure it's been repainted. There's no red-oxide layer showing where the paint was sanded prior to it being shortened to Tahoe proportions -just gray primer. That all happened before he got it. It's baby blue that he thinks is close to the original. It's all one color but since it's a repaint, who knows if'n it was 2-toned.
It has the Custom options; fancy steering wheel, part of the Custom trim is still in place on the door, chrome bumpers and bright grille -not sure if it's chrome or 'lunamum. I'll take a closer look next time I'm over there, check the trim tag, etc. I think it's a '65, the spokes on the steering wheel are straight across. I think '66 custom wheel they were angled, or do I have it backward?

They are basically the same, except the 2nd row seat has a small notch to clear the wheel well.

I don't know. Really, this thread has been almost my entire education on the red seats. A couple of posts on the first page by me and Factorystock address this very question. I'm still learnin'.
What's your buddy's paint code?

Just unloaded my new burb project and low and behold in the back with all the other crap was one of those talked about red seats! It was covered over with some weird alligator looking fabric.
Not very good shape but still a red seat.

Re: The rare "Red Seat"

I dont know how accurate or true this is, but I was told that the "red" seat was an option on the 3/4 and 1 ton trucks/burbs/panels that were painted either silver or white. These "red" seats had extra padding to be more comfortable and were a dealer special. It was not a "request-able" option.

I got this from an old chevy dealer (neighbor of a friend). But my friend says that he is starting to get a little senile. Take it for what it is worth.

Ok everybody, take look at the copy in the piece of literature here. What the old man said could be interpreted as correct, sort of. Not so sure about the 3/4 and 1 ton bit, but the lit states if you ordered the custom comfort package which included a seat with "extra padding", AND the exterior color happened to be red, white, or gray, then you automatically got the red vinyl.
NOW... to prove or disprove this, let's get a count on how many of you have seen a '62-'65 (I think only these years) truck or suburban that was FACTORY painted red, white, or gray and had a FAWN custom comfort seat. If you know of such a set-up, then this kind of proves the red was optional, no?

I took these last week, I believe it was a 62 BBW custom cab, BTW, he only wanted 50 for the cab. I think it also was a grey cab.

I never noticed before even though i've been to this wrecking yard many many times. But one of the 3/4 tons has a red seat. It's pretty rough on the driver side.

The front of the frame is cut off right in front of the cab, but is complete from the cab back with all the air stuff, ash tray, auto column, etc.... He bought it for parts for this Blue SWB Big window that he gave $400.00 for.

He is always buying and selling, and is already talking about selling these two and he just got them last weekend. I might make a play for them

Trying to sell without photos is very fustrating to buyers. Remember 63 pattern is different than the 64-65 pattern. However any original seat with most of its upholstry intact, is a great reference for you to purchase correct new materials and for the upholstry shop to place stitches in all the correct places.
