Thank you for the pictures! It really helps us novice welders to see both the front and backside of a weld.

Hey man I wanted the same tubs that you posted pics of but decided to go a different route after seeing the price. No limit Engineering has them for too much money for me to consider. But if the look is what you have to have I say go for it. Here is a link to the No Limit tubs. http://nolimit.net/products.asp?dept=1200

Hey Skip,

The reason I went with two fenders instead of one (I could have cut one in half also) is because I like the rolled look instead of a wheelbarrow or Bar B.Q pit looking tub. If you can find a fender that has the roll on the front and back of the fender you would be good to go, I could not find one. Buy the way, I brought mine on ebay for something like 40 bucks for the two of them.

Re: Tami's 51 build

What did you use to cut the rear part of the cab. The part I am talking about is the part that is around the window. Mine is about 2"-3" thick and what to make sure the cut is straight.

Re: Tami's 51 build

finally got time to a little more work... here's a few pics...
http://i488.photobucket.com/albums/r...2/IMG_0012.jpg

http://i488.photobucket.com/albums/r...2/IMG_0001.jpg
PO did a crappy job of putting in panels , so I am cutting it all out and re doing it...stuff was off by as much as 3/4 inch in places.
http://i488.photobucket.com/albums/r...P1010004-1.jpg
welded up the lower seam, I read that here and would never have even thought about it.. thanks!
top's lower,,, now gotta make the doors fit..
http://i488.photobucket.com/albums/r...P1010002-1.jpg

we were going to put a 3/16 round bead where the drip rail used to be, but once I got it this close, we (meaning her..lol) decided to leave it smooth
http://i488.photobucket.com/albums/r...2/P1010003.jpg

hard to see , but we are messing with the idea of putting some louvers, intake, what ever you want to call them into the hood, I like it !
http://i488.photobucket.com/albums/r...IMG_0029-1.jpg

one thing I just could not find that I liked was a vent setup for when we add AC, it all was either cheap looking plastic or, well you know... so I just put in 2 louvered boxes in between the ign. and lighter.. hopefully I'll have room for the ac switches in between.. to me, this had more of a (looked like it was built that way look) and since we smoothed the dash..(filled in the old radio, speaker, ashtray) and smoothed the glove box door, this is a clean look..

Looks very good. That looks like duraglass you are using on the welded seams. I do the same, I love the stuff for things like that.

skip99 01-11-2011 02:09 PM

Re: Tami's 51 build

yep, duraglass, costs a lot, but saves a lot more !!lol

Re: Tami's 51 build

What did you use for the louvered boxes in the dash?

skip99 01-11-2011 06:22 PM

Re: Tami's 51 build

The ac vents were really simple, just time consuming... cut a hole, ran 1/8" round rod on the edges , and welded 1/8" x 1/2" flat for the louvers, just put 7/16 nuts between the slats for even spacing and just kinda "tilted" them like a stack of dimes for a nice angle, and tacked them in place. then just built boxes out of 20 ga. with 2" muffler pipe to attach to vent hose, and drilled a hole through from the front of the dash put a screw in and welded it flush to make a stud from behind. there is a factory fold in the bottom of the dash that holds the bottom of the vent box in place..only needed the one stud to bolt it from the top.

can post close pics if you like..

Thanks, thats the info I needed. I don't like the cheesey plastic one that came with my VA set up either and have been playing with different ideas. Yours has me looking at my just painted dash again....

Re: Tami's 51 build

here's the shot of the vent boxes I made..
http://i488.photobucket.com/albums/r...P1010005-1.jpg

and started smoothing the dash
http://i488.photobucket.com/albums/r...P1010004-3.jpg

this is converting a pull down handle to the pushbutton type
these are the original hole for pull down on a 51
http://i488.photobucket.com/albums/r...P1010003-1.jpg

this is a reinforcement plate out of a 52, I just cut out a 2x3 square area around the original holes, lined up the plate from the inside, put the handle on temporarily , then welded the correct hole section in out of a 52 skin. welded up the 51 door lock hole and cleaned it up.

http://i488.photobucket.com/albums/r...P1010002-2.jpg

the rear gap in the door was touching, so I also had to drill about 10 holes through the skin , spot weld to hold the skin in place then cut off about 1/4 " on the edge of the door, lay a weld bead, and grind it straight.

Re: Tami's 51 build

Started on the bear claw install, ...pretty much the same idea as in the past, but I thought I could move the pivot point down and basically gain mechanical advantage, making it easier to push the button..
http://i488.photobucket.com/albums/r...P1010001-4.jpg
http://i488.photobucket.com/albums/r...P1010004-5.jpg
http://i488.photobucket.com/albums/r...P1010006-4.jpg
I ended up making a couple of these intil I got it right, this is the first try on the right,,,
I also forgot that when I made the second one, I had to make a mirror image of it..whoops!! oh well make another..
http://i488.photobucket.com/albums/r...P1010007-2.jpg
better make sure these fit..

Great fab skills, which one is the one you're going to use as your finished product? The one on the Left or the one on the Right? The one on the Left looks like it has more room to work with the push button.

Nice build. Really like your detailed progress pics. I've been wondering about AC vents myself. I like yours also.
I want to try a chop someday soon. Your pics will come in nicely

Re: Tami's 51 build

thanks guys, I actually won't use either, I fine tuned them a little more ( since I bought this really cool slip roll, brake, shear combo thingy,,!lol!)
and you are right I went with more or less the one on the left, it gave me a little more room for the pushbutton. and I'll add nylon washers..

I would be interested in a set if it will work on the large bearclaws, it looks like you are using the small ones.

I'd like to see this really cool slip roll, brake, shear combo thiny. I've got a slip roll and brake I'd like a shear but my shop is getting smaller all the time.

Re: Tami's 51 build

I'll post a pic today, I got mine here...
http://reviews.tractorsupply.com/051...ws/reviews.htm

it won't shear heavy gauge metal, but it will bend nice and roll sweet !!
tractor supply had one left, I offered them $300 and they took it.
I would like to of had separate machines to do heavier metal, but I need the room also..plus smaller pieces do really make up 99% of what I need to do.
