reaper71, If I try to load 5 pictures at a time it will not let me. Try loading 2 at a time. That seems to work for me. I hate computers!

reaper71, That looks great. I love the color. It looks close to my sons 1948 truck bed that he sleeps in. I guess only putting a couple pictures up must have worked.


Atommik. Here is how I made the panel. First I took a piece of metal to make the profile of the shape. Then marked (every 1/4 of a inch) the sheet metal so I could brake form it on the brake( small bends to make a radius). Once that was done I put it on the fender to see where I would slice it. Once I sliced it I overlapped the slices. I then marked it so I could cut the overlaps. Cut the overlaps and pushed them together to check the fit. Once I was happy with the fit I tacked the slits together and then ground them flush on both sides. I then took it over to the air planishing hammer and used it to form the radius so the was no flat spots. After that I would weld up all the seams I grind both side again that way it does not mess up the dies on the air planishing hammer. Then run it on the hammer again. Take the disc sander to it and it is ready to weld in.

The last picture is one of the pieces I am making for britnjc. It is the piece for around the windshield for his 1955 chevy truck(AD). I have both sides to do but that is the passenger side. I still have to form it to the profile of the cab, The inner piece is also stretched and shrank to the profile of the inner lip. It is good a have a cab so I can check everything. Then I can weld them together. Then I will make a section of the belt line for under the corner. They do not make any of those pieces for the 54-55 cabs. I already made a rear belt line for him too.

Shannon, thanks for the extra pics of the patch forming. That is was I thought you were doing, but it helps to see it! I hope to get going with my cab corners in the spring! I would rather spend the time building them than spend the money buying them!! I don't have much extra time, but I've got NO extra money!!

67swb72klb, Thank you. Yes, it is time consuming. That is all I got done last week while I was off. I worked on it somewhere between 30 and 40 hrs. I was happy with what I got done. I have to get back to my 1948 truck next week so I can buy my rear disc brake kit. I should have it in epoxy primer this weekend and get back to working on it by the end of the month.

shannon, love the work as usual. Really wanna see this on the road. But Im sure we all appreciate seeing this thing under the knife too. I love threads that have tons of metal work, it is so interesting to see.

I'm actually getting a 49' panel off a guy this spring. It is really bad, but I didn't want it to go to the scrap. So I might just put some white walls on it, and paint a logo on the side and leave it in the yard. I can use some other stuff off it and who knows maybe someday I will work on it. Def love the panels and burbs.

99 to Life, Thank you. I too love seeing all the metal work and am glad to post it all. I know alot of people like to see how it is done. You can never learn enough on the internet and is good to see different ways of doing it. That is cool you are getting a panel. To bad it is in bad shape. You will have to post some pictures when you get it. Maybe you can fix it sometime. Mine was in sad shape when I got it. That would be cool seeeing it with your logo sitting in your yard, anything is better than the crusher.

yeah here is a pic, I'm def one to think stuff isn't bad for being in PA but this is bad. I have extra grilles and fenders that I could put on her, I was gonna take the engine out and keep it for parts. I could use the dash out of it if I really needed to. I gotta fab up some rear fenders for it. throw some white walls on her and put her in the yard. Good news is it comes with a title and all for a fair price. I just got to go get it, but I have no trailer at the moment and the weather is trife. So it may have to wait till spring.

Well I should be epoxy primering tomorrow night. I have all the metal work done as best as I can without getting to crazy. It will still need a skim coat of filler but will be 10 times better than it was. I also just ordered the rear disc brake setup and some odds and ends I need to get this thing on the road. Now I only need time. This week end I will be back on the 48 truck and finishing up those windshield panels. I will post some pictures with the primer on.

That is some pretty metal work. Can you show us what you use to grind down the welds and what sequence it takes? For example, spot weld, grind then down with whatever tool, then weld some more and then use whatever tool with what grits, etc until smooth and finished.

hotrod1, Thank you. I just use my trusty 4 1/2 Dewalt angle grinder. It is the best tool ever. I mostly use a hard back wheel first to knock the weld down close to the surface and the use a 50-60 grit soft disc to take it the rest of the way down. Then I follow it up with a 80 grit pad on the DA once everything is welded and ground. That is basically how I do it. The 80 grit finish is good for the epoxy primer to stick to before the body work.

Well here it is in epoxy primer with no filler. That will be in the next couple of weeks. I have to finish a couple things on the 1948 pickup I am also working on. I also took a short video of it running BUT can not figure out how to get it from youtube to the site. So if someone can let me know that would be great.
