With stock wheels, the rear track on my 69 was so narrow that 235-75 tires were very close to the bed. In fact, the bed had a tire rub mark on one side! That's when I remember reading (back in the early 90s) that 1970-72 models had wider axles.
I ended up installing 8" rally wheels which moved the tires outboard at least an inch, which gave even 255-70s more bed clearance than 235-75s. At that time I also had a race car shop re-drill my axles for 5 on 5 because 71-72 axles were too long. The shop also had to turn down the pilot on the axles by a small amount so the 5-lug drums would fit. So my 69 axles have been Frankensteins for almost 30 years! |

I get people asking, "What year is that, about a '76-'77?" when I'm getting gas in my '72. I thought everyone in the whole wide world knew the body changed in '73, then squarebodies forever

I get people asking if my 69 is a 71 or 72, but I don't remember anything farther off-base that that.
When I had a 55 Chevy car, a older guy in a parking lot said something like, "Nice 56." When I told him it was a 55 he said he was pretty sure it was a 56 because he had one when he was younger. I just know he walked away thinking he was right! I'm an older guy now and sometimes think I remember things like places and date, until my wife corrects me! However, one thing I never get wrong is the years and models of old cars and trucks, even the Oldsmobiles and Pontiacs my parents had in the 50s to 80s. |

Chevy guy at the local gym drives a 70, he's had it forever. The guy's as old as I am, on our last 1/4, or 1/3ish with good blessings. He had trouble believing the 400 is a 402 instead of a 400 SBC.
These trucks are an education. Even vendors and experts got it wrong on occasion, sometimes must be doesn't apply to any. OT: On occasion my girlfriend sent me pics of square bodies, "look, a truck like yours":lol: May as well be, she's a California EV girl:smoke: Guess what a car show means to Sacramento? No Chevy trucks short a Luv, 2% interesting and 98% new muscle, sport and EV cars - Neat. |

I'd have to look this up. The 396 became a 402, but was still called a 396 by GM, right? Or was it called both?

In '69 it was called a 396. That held true for '70 except for trucks and the big cars, which if my memory serves me correctly, got 400 badges, and I think that the SBC 400 was available a well as the BBC 402. It was a few years later that the SBC 400 was available in trucks. I worked at a couple different dealerships back in those days, but I could have it slightly wrong. This is from memory.

Thanks! That shell is about 6 years old. The wife went with these side windows, but the really old school aluminum frames were still available.

For 1970, the GM Heritage Center shows the 250 and 307 as standard, with 292, 350, and 396 as options, but no 400.
The 396 was also available with a couple different 4-speed transmissions. One was called "close ratio". Both came with a Dana 3.54 rear axle. Now those would have been some cool trucks! |
