It took us about two hours though getting the 40 year old tires off! But now they look so nice itīll be tough to not mess them up mounting the tires again (new ones). This is also a unique combination that I thought was cool even before I knew they actually built a few of those. I got confirmation from GM Heritage Cnter that with the V8 they only built 41 total. (68 total in ī68). And the guy mentioned with the manual 4 speed and the PTO winch it might have been less than a handfull that were built that way. This one is almost museum worthy! ;) |
Re: 68 K20 Panel truck, ex. civil defence vehicle
Finally got the tires mounted with some new tubes and liners.
They did get scratched up a little, but I knew that before, them being split rims. But with a little touch up paint, they turned out really nice. http://i133.photobucket.com/albums/q...420_130433.jpg http://i133.photobucket.com/albums/q...420_130615.jpg http://i133.photobucket.com/albums/q...420_130558.jpg They also look good on the truck. Can only imagine how nice itīll look when the truck matches the wheel colors. http://i133.photobucket.com/albums/q...420_131157.jpg http://i133.photobucket.com/albums/q...420_131237.jpg And now the reason for the tire choice: I wanted a radial tire for the sake of drivability. I wanted to keep the MT tire though. I also wanted sth that works with the split rims and has the same diameter of the old bias ply tires but with just a little more width. Hence the Cooper Discoverer STT Pro in 235/85R16 I think they turned out great and will look perfect on the truck, especially with the hubcaps! http://i133.photobucket.com/albums/q...420_130500.jpg http://i133.photobucket.com/albums/q...420_135735.jpg |

Re: 68 K20 Panel truck, ex. civil defence vehicle
Had this come up for sale a year later, I might well have bought it. However, there is no way I could have done it the justice you are giving it.
Those wheels alone are amazing and your research into its Civil Service days is inspiring. |

Re: 68 K20 Panel truck, ex. civil defence vehicle
Little update for everyone. Havenīt gotten around to do anything more than taking the winch fairlead off. Had a baby girl 5 months ago and it has been very busy since. I hope to get back to it this coming spring.
I will keep you posted on any updates. Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to everyone! |

Re: 68 K20 Panel truck, ex. civil defence vehicle
Sorry for being quiet for so long. The little girl kept me busy, so I didnīt get to do much on the panel. Trying to get back to it this winter. I will post pics again soon!

Re: 68 K20 Panel truck, ex. civil defence vehicle
Long pause and I appologize for that. Kid and what has happening in the world made priorities change. However I did get some more disassembly done. Brakes are off and now it needs some body work.
Still unsure as of takeing the engine apart or just painting it. It runs and does not smoke at all, runs fine, so might just risk of keeping it in there. Very slow process, but things are kicking back up. Glass will come out this month. As for the body, unfortunately the driver side rocker and floor have a few small holes. The rear quater behind the rear wheel has a big dent and I hope to save the panel without cutting that. Driver side between the wheels, seems to have a lot of bondo in there, letīs see what happens after dry ice blasting it. I did gather a few more NOS parts for it, as I try to do everything NOS and OEM that I can possibly get my hands on. Stay tuned, I will get back on this thing now.... |
Re: 68 K20 Panel truck, ex. civil defence vehicle
Glad you're back at it. I wondered what was happening a few times.
