"I Don,t buy that theory. Because when you buy a brand new veh. The plates are sent from main DMV in Sacto. Not your local Dmv office. JMO"
JMO, My 1969 Chevelle SS396 was purchased at Starksen Chevrolet in Lancaster, CA in October, 1968, It was owned by 2 neighbors there, for 15 years each. It has both original black license plates XTW342 according to the original owner. I was at a local car show a few years back when a couple approached me. The guy asks, "Hey your Chevelle is from Lancaster isn't it?" I said yes and was curious as to how he could tell. He explained that he grew up in Lancaster and was working in a gas station there for a few years including 1969. According to him, most every car that rolled in had black plates that started with XTW. |
Re: 63-72 Calif Comm Black Plate sequence

Re: 63-72 Calif Comm Black Plate sequence
How come my 71 has blue plates with 12 345L...................

Mr. C/10 You got me thinking and I did some checking and I came up with another possibility as to why I have blue plates on a 71. It was not sold until 3-20-72. So I could have the original blue plates on a 71, what do you think?..................................Flat67 |

Re: 63-72 Calif Comm Black Plate sequence
I just bought a set of black plates at the Reno swap meet last weekend for my '64. They are stamped '63 on the upper right and are Axx448. And my dad's '71, sold in '70, had 64xxxG before he switched to the HUNTING plate.

Re: 63-72 Calif Comm Black Plate sequence
I bought a 70 GMC C/20 from a fellow in Sacramento this spring. It was assembled in Fremont and, as far as I know, spent most of it's life in the Sacramento area. The plate number is 34 326 F. Don't know if this will help solve this puzzle but thought I would throw it out there anyway.

Re: 63-72 Calif Comm Black Plate sequence
There will always be decrepencies due to early or late year model, left over new vehicle sold the next year and lost plates that were replaced, but there is a sequence to California commercial plates. Commerical plates used only one letter, car plates used 3 letters. The new (yellow on black) 1963 plates, began with A on the left side. There were many different letters for 1963, because many older 1956 thru 1962 plates(black on yellow) were exchanged Generally 1964 was around N or P, 1965 around R or S or , 1966 around T or U, 1967 was V or X . Y or Z may be early 68 models. After letters were exhuasted around 1968, The letter A began on the right side. A and B around 1968, C and D around 1969, F G around 1970, H and J around 1971. L and K around 1972( plates now changed to blue with yellow letters). This is what I have observed on pickups with period plates 95% of the time. Remember commerical plates have only 1 letter during these years, multiple letters (3 letters 3 numbers are car plates).

Re: 63-72 Calif Comm Black Plate sequence
I'd like to hear from any California members
that have trucks with Black Commercial plates that end in a Letter. (2 numbers/ 3 numbers/ 1 Letter) Your truck would be a 1967-72 probably My question: Is there a "63" imprinted in the upper corner box? Thanks for responding! Wayne Weaver |

LiveWire 64,
Does the front Plate is there a "63" stamped into the upper corner sticker box?? |
Re: 63-72 Calif Comm Black Plate sequence
Okay, okay!!!!
My '72 had black plates. So, a lot of water flows under the bridge from 1967 until 2010, right? The current build is a '68 non-op'd with white commercial plates. Can't get at 'em right now, so I don't know the sequence. But I have access to a set of black plates with this config: ABC 123 What will I have to do to use them? |
Re: 63-72 Calif Comm Black Plate sequence
Not all 1963 series California Black plates have a "63" stamped into upper corner box. This applies to passenger and commercial plates.
Some Passenger plates did not have the "63" stamp near the last of the series. I've seen plates examples beginning with X with the "63" and without, same goes for Y. All the Z plates I've seen have no "63". My '69 Nova and Chevelle have their original Black plates and no "63"... I just never noticed. Commercial plates do the same thing near the end of the earlier format (starts with a letter) in 1966-68. All of the later format thru 1972 did have the "63" ( ends with a letter) Wayne |
