I have an original 2Jet on my 1970 307 and it has 4 bolts on the base. Original choke is manifold heat spring type and still functions great.
Need a pic or two?

My first truck geezer.... I'm learning new stuff every day! Sounds like this was an idle solenoid cause it has an unterminated electrical connection. The other new thing I learned about yesterday is how to unlock jammed shifter rods. Couldn't move the shifter in or out of gear. Played with the timing and carburetor today but didn't make it much better. Vacuum leak does not seem likely but my only test wast to cover it up with my hand and see it quickly die out.

Here are pics. You can see the old electric choke that is not connected electrically and the other pic shows the cable for the manual choke

The op said he had an electric choke converted to manual.
I suspect he doesn't know the difference between a divorced choke (which he had), a hot air choke or an electric. JMHO!!

He said right here where he thought the spark knock solenoid bolted to the carb was the electric choke. :)

When you say you "played with the timing", did you use a timing light? Or just spin the distributor around a bit?

Vacuum leak would be around the base of the carb. Spray some carb cleaner or starting fluid around the base of the carb while the truck is running. If the idle noticeably speeds up... you have a leak at the baseplate. Probably the gasket between the carb and the manifold.

Learned a lot more today. Picked up a kit and rebuilt the carburetor. Made a few minor mistakes and one bigger one. The big one involved hastily breezing thru the float setup. Had to open it back up after putting back on truck cause the float was not closing the fuel flow. Other thing I learned was that there is a vacuum port on the firewall side of the carb. It had a cap on it but the cap was in really bad shape. I suspect there was a vacuum issue there. Truck is running a LOT better. I appreciate the education and patience you all gave this newby.

Gary

I haven't had a timing light in 30 years. I twisted the distributor in 1/8" increments each direction. Ended up putting right back where I found it.

GREAT THREAD !

We started out with a guy asking for recommendations on replacing his carburetor because some experts told him it needed it.

Now, we have the guy rebuild his own carburetor and says its running much better.

Thats what I'm talking about. Learning how to be self sufficient by figuring things out on your own and realizing that most experts in this world aren't near as good as you think they are. With the Internet, youtube, and the library, there are very few things the average person can't learn to do himself.

Re: 1972 c10 307 carburetor options?

One last question. The rebuild kit came with two gaskets for the base. As pictured before there was one for two bolts and also another gasket for 4 bolts. At this moment I only have two bolts but the engine does have holes for four (assuming the other two holes are tapped). Would I be better served to pick up a few bolts and change to the four hole gasket?

Re: 1972 c10 307 carburetor options?

If the gaskets are an exact match and the holes are threaded go for it.

Well brakes are prob next but I still have one issue to deal with on the carburetor. Runs great here in the neighborhood but on the highway at around 65mph I get this pulsing that sort of feels like someone us turning the fuel supply off and on. Lasts about 10 seconds and then stops. Any suggestions? The adjustment I made on the float was kinda crude and maybe I went too far or perhaps not enough??

The heat shield is a stock piece on the truck from the factory. As are the two extra base-plate bolts. (California Truck)

I took the top off the carburetor again today. Truck Now has the proper float settings and no more surging.
