Re: My first project. '70 GMC swb 4x4

I understand you like to keep them somewhat original, and after reading over your post I understand what you ment by disrespectul.. but...
So a Chevy grill on a gmc=disrespectful
A "hacked-up frame draggers"==disrespectful
But strip a perfectly good truck and send it to the crusher= Respectful as long as I need a part off of it.?.?.????
Wouldn't you consider by taking or buying parts from a gmc. From a truck that isn't in that bad of shape. A truck that is restorable or could make a good daily driver MORE disrespecful? There are a limited number of these trucks out there. I would assume that you wouldn't pass up a good gmc part that's cheap from someone who is parting out a good truck....Something tells me you would snatch it up without a single rant...

Woz05- Thanks for being so understanding with all the verbal abuse your receiving. Since it's your truck, you should build it as you see fit.

Guys, lets let this GMC/Chevy issue go. This is a build thread that your cluttering up with your personal opinions that were not asked for.

Re: My first project. '70 GMC swb 4x4

sorry guys,
I didn't see any verbal abuse. I didn't even see it as an argument. Just a discussion/debate.
sorry for jacking the post.....this wasn't in the build thread when it was first posted.
Woz05...quick do some work on your truck and post some pictures so this is in the right forum.....
just kidding

I didn't move it here, but with the title being "My first project" this is where it should be. Regardless of what forum it originated in the debate on how he builds it became excessive considering he did not ask anyone's opinion on whether he should keep the GMC front clip.

ive got one of the fenders down to bare metal, now i need to weld the trim holes closed, weld the marker light area closed, and figure out what to do over the pitted looking areas. Por-15 then paint over that? etching primer? any suggestions are welcome

N2TRUX 09-21-2007 10:25 AM

Re: My first project. '70 GMC swb 4x4

Since you are down to raw metal, it needs to be sealed. Once you have cleaned it thoroughly go with a sealer/etching primer. You can use a filler on the welded areas, and a filler primer on the rest.

Re: My first project. '70 GMC swb 4x4

Where do you go to get sealer/etching primer, I looked at advance auto parts last night and all they had was duplicolor etching primer. Is that any good.

Also, is etching primer/sealer one product or is it a two step thing. put down etching primer then sealer. I've never painted anything from raw metal up so you'll have to break it down for me.

Could you guys give me exact product names that you use too, i dont wanna buy crappy stuff and have to end up redoing this in a few months.

Hey thanks a lot, I know that road so I shouldn't have any trouble finding it. Maybe Ill just go there with the fender and see what they say to use on it.

Re: My first project. '70 GMC swb 4x4

do you have an air compressor at home if its a decent size you can get a small hand held sand blaster for like 40.dollers i typically sand blast any rust areas i have to make sure its all gone .

Woz05 09-21-2007 02:30 PM

Re: My first project. '70 GMC swb 4x4

I have a compressor at home but not out here in rochester. Out in rochester I dont really have to much to work with.
I'd like to set up an area in the basement of our townhouse to do painting, maybe get a small compressor from harbor freight, and learn how to paint with a spraygun.

Do you think it would get rid of those pitted looking areas? 80 grit sandpaper didnt get rid of them

Sorry, but I don't get it. Are you telling me every reply has to contain something with the word or words involving trucks

Please stay on topic mostly, if you go off topic and start a fight that is when the problem starts. Keep it civil and don't inform those that make the rules and forums of how to od their job and you'll be ok. I'm sure if in your job, some customer came in and told you you were doign everythign wrong you wouldnt like it and likely would know the correct way of doing it instead of the way they were saying.

Josh

sorry for the off topic bs in the post guys.

Ok, I think I got it. Thanks for the explanation. I just went back and read the rules and other stuff 3 times to see if I could figure out what I was doing wrong.

He was a new member and I thought thru conversation I could make him feel at home on this informative site! He seemed to have a lot in common with me and I guess I should've went to PM's sooner. I'm new to this stuff, and I will try to keep this mind. I hope I hav'nt stepped on any toes, and if I did I'm truly sorry...

This is the first time I've bin in trouble. J

I deleted my posts because nu2trux said I was taking up to much space

You missed my point, because I started talking to him on the truck forum and I thought it would be Ok to continue the conversation, then when I realized it was now a build thread, the damage was dun

I would NEVER tell anyone how to do their job, that was not my intent, I was trying to explain why I did what I did.

Woz, back on topic.... sorry for the diversion, my bad

Are you sure you want to paint in your town house, this stuff really stinks, try going over to the body shop forum, they may be able to answer your specific questions regarding your fenders. I'm sure that it can be fixed after the surface rust is removed, mechanicily or chemically. I've never put paint on top of mine, but I have used a tar-like matrl., under that is a weldable primer, something with zinc, I guess in it JMHO J.

Don't know if this will be of any help, but

Mechanical tech, wow good choice! Can never have to many of them around

I am slightly confused is your truck in rochester or is it in syracuse ? cause man if in rochester bring it on i can give you a hand i know i could always use one .ok sorry no me chatter from me on you build thread .later

Woz05 09-22-2007 07:36 PM

Re: My first project. '70 GMC swb 4x4

C-1072 my truck is in the syracuse area but I bring different parts back and forth all the time to work on, so I can still get some stuff done on the truck while I'm at school, like the fenders.

But like I said I don't have a welder or sandblaster or anything out in rochester so if you'd be willing to help me out with stuff or show me how to do some stuff, (I have close to zero welding experience) it would be greatly appreciated. I wouldn't mind giving you a hand with your project(s) either, I enjoy working on stuff, especially theses trucks.

Oh and I don't care if you guys talk about random stuff on my build thread, i like hearing what you guys have to say.

Re: My first project. '70 GMC swb 4x4
