Got a good picture of the sticker on the inside of the glovebox? It would be good to see, have lots of scoop on it. Very nice truck and crazy great price you got it for.

Re: How rare is the GMC Sierra Grande?

69 was the last year for the speed warning, the wheels weren't put on pickups untill 73 at least... I actually think it was later, and that tailgate was either reskinned, or it is an aftermarket one. It's more than just holes filled, it is flat where a stock one is not... plus, it would have chevrolet, or GMC embossed in it. No way that is original, onless it has a skin put over it.
As for the grande with no headliner... I don't even want to speculate.
I've seen plenty of 69 CST trucks with no headliner, nor cargo light... so I know it was added to the package after the begining of the model year... but by 70, all the chevy trucks with the CST package were getting them... no reason why the GMC wouldn't.
I have to question the badges... or the posability of a cab swap.

This thread has gotten some good discussion going. I have some questions and comments.
Longhorn man, You mentioned that sierragrande71’s tailgate didn’t appear original because of the smooth tailgate. If I removed my molding wouldn’t it be smooth? (see Picture)

I don’t have the wood grain on my dash nor do I have the gauge pkg. I don’t know what to think of this. But every thing I have says Sierra Grande on it. (note pictures) I don’t see any evidence of repaint on the interior either.

Is the placard on the glove box door the build sheet? Or is that something else?

In the build sheet (?) on the glove box (see picture) & note the Z84 custom sport truck pkg. what does this mean exactly?

I also took the picture of the customer order form too. It didn’t take very well of the whole form, but the whole truck only cost 3200 bucks.
This form lists some info that isn’t listed on the glove box.
Thanks for any info in advance.
Dean

That is a nice truck for 800.00 dollars. I love the green trucks for some reason. I love the mirrors on it and it is really straight looking. Thanks for posting pictures. I wish I could do the same for you. I seem to never figure it out. Your dads trucks looks good pulling that trailor. I like the white one two. I hope to have that style grill here soon for my 70 Chevy LWB Custom. It has a shabby 71 grill on it currently. Give me your email, I will email you pictures of my two trucks. Talk to you soon.

:) If the prior owners or owner did not replace the tailgate in the trucks history and you remove the tailgate band that has the GMC on it, you should find an original stamped GMC Tailgate. If it reads Chevy then most likely your gate was swapped out after it left the factory. I hope that helps.
I must say, NICE TRUCK. It is the same color as mine on the inside. I absolutly love that color green on your glove box and gage cluster/steering column.

good lookin truck i think it needs some sport mirrors though

I've never seen GMC's with the engine size emblem on the fender either, but could have been added later.

Re: How rare is the GMC Sierra Grande?

Another question I have is the script word Custom above the door handle. Mine had holes for it and the guy I got it from said it was loose, so he tried to tighten them up and they broke.
I went to a junk yard called Johns in San Antonio TX and seen a few dozen Chevy trucks and found only one truck that had them on it. all others trucks had no evidence of emblems there.
The factory brochure shows it in the picture too. So what dose this mean?

Re: How rare is the GMC Sierra Grande?

Longhornman, was right about the tailgate it turns out that it was reskinned at one point. As for the mirrors those will be replaced with some sport mirrors from that era. I don't have any pics of the glovebox decal that on the inside of it, because I keep both my GMC and my white '69 Chevy pickups at my parents house. I live in the city of Sacramento, CA and refuse to the possibility of waking up one morning and seeing that some "low-life" has taken my babies from me! Some of my friends nice rides have vanished that way. DMX84, I noticied that you glovebox emblem is different than mine, mine has the actual "SIERRAGRANDE" emblem on it. Wonder what's the reasoning behind that?

I have no clue. There seems to be a lot of differences between these trucks IE: the Custom above the door handle not on your truck, the missing wood grain trim on my dash, missing head liner from Rayn”70’s (his other missing stuff I think is just optional and not standard for the SG edition) Everything I have says it’s a Sierra Grande, I also know a little about the history of the truck too. I don’t suspect that it was changed in any way either-just the way they did things I guess.
Maybe they didn’t build that may SG’s and they couldn’t remember everything that went on ‘em and just built them with what they could remember?

Does your truck have the sport truck PKG (Z86)? I would like to know what this is.
BTW, do you have the front sway bar?
~D

sierragrande71 01-06-2007 12:42 PM

Re: How rare is the GMC Sierra Grande?

Yeah, mine has the front sway bar not to sure what the z86 means or if I have it on mine? Once I find out I let you know. Another question that came to my mind is that, Is safe to say that the SierraGrande is more rare than the Cheyenne or Cheyenne Super? Or what would be worth in the long run? Many people seem to favor the Cheyenne than the SierraGrande, I been tempted to changeout the frontend to the chevy version.

Here's the reason I'm bringing my 72 Sierra Grande back from the dead. Another plus - the PO put a 6" lift in it!

Once done, the only original equipment will be the rolling frame, roof lights, and the glove box door of course!

I think you would be shooting yourself in the food if you did that. But if you do, I want the emblems!
Go to ebay and search for 67-72 Chevy’s then search for GMC. You will find a lot less GMC’s. I like things that are rare or hard to find, otherwise it’s just another old truck! (both good looking I might add)
My 2 cents worth.

That’s cool, that's going to be nice when done!
But that brings another abnormality to the SG build. Your sticker don’t say Sierra Grande on it. Don’t get me wrong- I’m not saying it not, Just that there is no standard that is traceable to the GMC Sierra Grande.
Do you have wood grain dash, head liner etc. like everyone else is saying they have?

Longhorn Man 01-06-2007 02:31 PM

Re: How rare is the GMC Sierra Grande?

some of the GMCs never had GMC names listed, only chevy names, and he has cheyenne super listed.

This thread is really raising some questions here, we may have to get all the Grande owners together and really annalize them.

Personally, if you are looking to make your truck worth more, then I'd keep it as a modified original. I am biased of course, my chevy wears a GMC nose on it. Bus a SWB Grande is practicly unheard of, esp with a 402.

Yes - woodgrain on the gauge cluster, glove box, door panels, and lower trim. Has a headliner, and the houndstooth bench. Also I think the side mirrors were part of the trailer package? Can someone clarify?

This was also equipped with Autostart (dealer installed?) wich I had never heard of before I got this truck.

what trailer package? Never heard of anything like that from GM, nor on your SPID.
Those mirrors look aftermarket

Andy -

I meant the camper wiring.

Longhorn Man 01-06-2007 07:47 PM

Re: How rare is the GMC Sierra Grande?

the camper wiring was on my longhorn still when I got it a few years ago, it should be a plug that comes up between the cab and bed. All it is, is a plug to hook to the camper body, to operate the tail lights, and dome lights in the camper. i have a photo of the plug on my old computer.

Does any one know what this Custom Sport Truck option is? Is this where the “custom” emblems come from above the door handles?

There is a black swb sierra grande about 10 miles from where I live.
The guy drives and uses this truck regularly, I do not know anything about it other than it has that muscle car 3/4 cam idle.

Re: How rare is the GMC Sierra Grande?

custom sport truck is the same as cheyenne. The name chainged in 71 on pick ups, many of the typers didn't get the memo.. or didn't care.
