Re: Ole Rusty-86 3/4 4WD
Nice work. I wish I was lucky enough to have a 4x4.
He doesn't make us look bad, he just makes us look slower than he is. LOL. |
Re: Ole Rusty-86 3/4 4WD
LOL thanks for the comments, how many 16-17 year olds are on this site?
|
Re: Ole Rusty-86 3/4 4WD

Re: Ole Rusty-86 3/4 4WD
I got 2 questions here.
The first: Is this bar suppose to be bent like it is or do I need a new one? http://i180.photobucket.com/albums/x...ress/003-8.jpg The second:How do I get the hub or what ever its called off? http://i180.photobucket.com/albums/x...ess/001-10.jpg |
Re: Ole Rusty-86 3/4 4WD
Ok since that didnt get any replies, what all can I take off the front axle that wont cost me hundreds of dollars to put back on. Im trying to make a sorta show truck outta this thing so I dont want any rust on it. And I know next to nothing about axles and what not. I bought me some chassis saver and what not, trying to clean this front end up for paint.
Edit:Everthing that has a rubber seal, like the tierods and what not, can I jsut buy new boots or do I have to replace that whole thing? |
Re: Ole Rusty-86 3/4 4WD
I don't know much of anything about front steering gear, but that is the front tie rod and it needs to be replaced. Bent = trash pile. As far as removing it, I think the tool is called a pickle-fork, but you're really into territory where you need a very good shop manual. Not that you won't get help here, but a good shop manual is a must.

Re: Ole Rusty-86 3/4 4WD

Re: Ole Rusty-86 3/4 4WD
that is what the spring perches are supposed to look like, the driver's side mount has a larger/slightly irregular shaped hole.
|
Re: Ole Rusty-86 3/4 4WD
I looked up the diagram for the front end, the bar thats bent is just the adjustment sleeve, its under $50 outta autozone. So now Im trying to take my tie rods out of it. Wat a PITA. New tie-rods are like $20 a peice. The internet does wanders. Thanks for all the replies.

Re: Ole Rusty-86 3/4 4WD
Everytime I look the part up and I find it, I can only find one for a 4:10 gear ratio. Is that going to matter? OR am I just screwed till I do go to a dealership?

You can rent the pickle fork at Autozone for cheap. Nice work so far on the truck! |
Re: Ole Rusty-86 3/4 4WD
Well I hope that the parts house carries the part cause I just got back from the dealership and they no longer carry it.
|
Re: Ole Rusty-86 3/4 4WD
well i turned 18 today so now you make an 18 year old look bad
as for your hub, dana 44? if so then you need to take off the locking hub (6-8 long skinny screws) then take that mess out inside (internal snap rings and a big goofy retaining nut that you can take off with a screwdriver and hammer if you dont have the special socket...ask me how i know...) then the hub should slide off. at least thats how it was on a TTB Ford dana 44 oh and all the steering parts are available at NAPA, autozone, advance, VIP, hell i bet you could get them through walmart |
Re: Ole Rusty-86 3/4 4WD
OK well I got the first snap ring off, the little one on the inside of the hub, now what else and in what order to I need to take out?

Re: Ole Rusty-86 3/4 4WD
Well since Im at a stand still, no money to buy parts, I decided it was time for some cleaning. So I moved everything out of my side of the garage and cleaned it, presure washed the concrete, then moved stuff back in. Now I can walk with out stepping on stuff lol.
Well anywho, got bored so I took some pics with my phone. Heres the frame as she sits. http://i180.photobucket.com/albums/x...ress/frame.jpg Here she is moved back in, http://i180.photobucket.com/albums/x...gress/Axle.jpg Here is my Daily Driver, did a complete tune up today on it. http://i180.photobucket.com/albums/x...rogress/DD.jpg And just for fun, my pyramid. http://i180.photobucket.com/albums/x...ss/Pyramid.jpg |
Re: Ole Rusty-86 3/4 4WD
I pulled the gas tank today, one bracket was so rusted that it snapped, the other came off fine. How do I fix the broken bracket? Here are some pics.
This is the good side http://i180.photobucket.com/albums/x...gress/Good.jpg This is the one that broke http://i180.photobucket.com/albums/x...ogress/Bad.jpg |
Re: Ole Rusty-86 3/4 4WD
I have an 87 3/4 ton which at some point is going to need what you are doing. Here is some things to consider. Your rear brakes, the cost of a disc brake conversion is not that much more than rebuilding the rear brakes if you intend to get new backing plates and drums. Also you have a daily driver so I am assuming the is no real rush to get this done. While you have the body off it might be a good time to box the frame even though you want it as a "show truck" it will give you piece of mind if you ever want to go off roading. I like the pyramid of dip cans when you get older the turn into beer cans/bottles and tend to slow your project down. Good on you for taking time to clean, parts the garage, everything. I believe you said you was going to put the 305 back in. My opinion is if your putting this much work in save your pennies and find a nice, running, 350 to put in. You will thank yourself latter. Good job kid it is looking good. if you need any info, stats, specs shoot me a message.

Re: Ole Rusty-86 3/4 4WD
Actually I looked the numbers up on the engine, it turns out to be an 86-88 350 2 or 4 bolt main. So all the motor will get is new seals and what not. Thanks for comments Moody.

Re: Ole Rusty-86 3/4 4WD
Good deal I have a copy of the RPO codes if you want to figure out what you got for gearing and what not I can send them to you.
|
Re: Ole Rusty-86 3/4 4WD
First you would have to explain what a RPO code is and where do I find it, but sure Id be greatful to know what gears I have.
|
Re: Ole Rusty-86 3/4 4WD
inside the glove box there should be a bunch of codes there different options. i would cut and paste them on here but there is 104 pages. write down all your codes and send them to me at harborfire_17@yahoo.com and I will send you a list of your options and any info I get off them.
