Well, unfortunately, after trying all weekend to get the V6 back in and still have clearance to lay frame we came to the conclusion that it isn't going to fit. So now I guess I have to find a new motor and tranny. I really wanted to keep the 6 but it's just too big. I'm so bummed right now.

NO! That really sucks man. What kind of engine do you think you'll go with?

Re: '63 GMC Project

I'll probably end up getting a plain old crate 350. Since I have to get a different motor I might as well get one I don't have to clean

Re: '63 GMC Project

Too bad you couldn’t keep the V6, but they are monsters in size and weight. I was amazed how much more clearance there was when I switched to a 350. It’s pretty obvious when you compare where the valve cover fits the notch in the firewall.

Boo! But I still wouldn't mind having a nice, well-built 350 or 327 sitting around for mine. Maybe once we get the shop put up and I have somewhere to put it.

does the 305 use the same mounts as the small blocks? I know you got the SD mount but I'm just wondering.

Actually I didn't get mounts with my x-member kit. When I ordered it I told them I wanted to use the 305 V6 so they sent me parts to make my own mounts.

Re: '63 GMC Project

Feel free to send me some parts off of that motor though. I can always use them because it'll be in there for awhile. ;)

Re: '63 GMC Project

Yeah i knew that Creep. You gonna get Jason to bend you up some new ones. It wouldn't be that hard to make some yourself either if you had the stuff.

creep 02-02-2010 09:44 PM

Re: '63 GMC Project

Yeah I ordered a new set of mounts from SD. We used the other parts to make mounts for the V6.

Twiggy, give me a couple of weeks grievance period then I might have a few things from the 305 I could part with.

TwiggyTheDrummer 02-02-2010 09:49 PM

Re: '63 GMC Project

Yeah I think I'd need the grievance time too. Was there anything that could have been done in any way to make it fit? Was it only when aired out or just general clearance with the firewall and other components?

creep 02-02-2010 10:02 PM

Re: '63 GMC Project

To get it to lay out the motor would have to move up 4" which would put the clutch fork into the firewall and the top of the carb through the hood. It may be technically possible but it would be way too much work and it wouldn't be pretty at all.

ruffrida2005 02-02-2010 10:04 PM

Re: '63 GMC Project

that's what I'm wanting to know

ruffrida2005 02-02-2010 10:05 PM

Re: '63 GMC Project

So your saying that you could stick it through the hood and stab a blower on it and make it look like a tiny mouse motor. Sweet

Slow progress is better than no progress, I guess.

Re: '63 GMC Project

We finally got the notches in today but we're going to hold off on the axle for a bit because I might be able to trade the 10 bolt Chevelle axle for a 12 bolt truck axle. since I can't find anyone around here to redrill axles replacing the axle shafts in the trucks 12 bolt with 5 on 5" axle shafts would be cheaper than having some custom made for the Chevelle rear end.

Re: '63 GMC Project

Man that is sweet. How long are the upper and lower links? I got to figure out some stuff on mine.

creep 03-21-2010 09:05 PM

Re: '63 GMC Project

I don't know what the exact lengths are yet. I will measure them for you next time I go out to work on it. Unfortunately it will probably be next weekend before I make it out there because it's at my buddy's house and it's about a 20 to 25 minute drive. I called suicidedoors and they told me it should be at the factory wheelbase (127") at ride height and will pull forward just slightly when layed out.

ruffrida2005 03-21-2010 09:10 PM

Re: '63 GMC Project

what you setting ride hight at. I'm setting mine at 4". Yours is LWB right?

creep 03-21-2010 09:29 PM

Re: '63 GMC Project

Yeah mine's a longbed.

I don't know how much space I'll have under the frame yet. I've always heard that 3 and 4 link suspensions should be set up so the bars are parallel with the ground at ride height. assuming that's the case, I would guess somewhere in the 6" to 8" range. I'm going to call SD tomorrow to find out.

What kind of front crossmember and setup is that creep?

ruffrida2005 03-21-2010 11:52 PM

Re: '63 GMC Project

That is the P-51 set up from www.***************** I have the same one.

ruffrida2005 03-21-2010 11:59 PM

Re: '63 GMC Project

Let me know how far you set your axle from the rear cab mounts at ride height. I believe it's 56". I'm going to set my pinion at ride height, then drop it to the ground before I mount the bags. I'm not going to run very much air in the rear to lift it. I hope I'm going in the right direction.
