I figure the who reason for Longhorns was more to add yet another truck model to the rapidly growing truck market by using the existing frame that still only offered a Stepside bed when Fleetsides had become the norm. The recreational vehicle side of things was hot so they offered them as a better camper hauler. GM had a deal with Open Road so I'm sure they had longer campers tailor made and ready to go for Longhorns. Some others did them but not all. Alaskans were being offered for utility body mounting,so those had already been available for 133" SRW trucks. Also, campers were already being set on Stepsides,so I guess there were already longer campers made for them.

Yeah 275/55/20. I usually don't like big wheels but got good deal on these and thought they looked good on there.

Yes, I believe so. I think they had the Sierra grande badges instead of Longhorn badges.

1971 longhorn, the first pic was taken at 12,000', there was a distinct gasoline smell at this altitude, but it wasn't driven at this altitude for very long, just long enough to get it over the rocky mountains.

thats a big camper bumper!! nice trucks guys keep the pics coming

dads longhorn 03-27-2012 09:55 AM

Re: lets see some longhorns

Yes, that bumper was all business. Dad had a camper on the truck (no tailgate), then a hitch put on (rear) to haul a boat with. There's also a hitch on the front of the truck to aid in putting the boat in/out of the water, moving trailers around, but the front bumper is regular sized. Other drivers stay away from this truck after they see the bumper, and I have to be especially careful when driving it not to back up into things, it's great! I toy with the idea of taking it off but then I'd be changing what the truck was designed for and used for.

Dad's longhorn, that is a very nice truck!

Proheader, your truck looks really rust free! Nice truck as well!
