Bought an inexpensive (well, compared to the others) cold air intake kit for the '99-'07 trucks, plus a 22* 4" tube and extra coupler to work up something to fit... now I'm running that to the drivers side!

Got some rewiring to do, a couple of terminations.....then I can't think of one good reason not to hit the key! Since I have a GoPro now...I suppose I'll set it up to record the event. I'm actually kind of anxious to hear it now...vs w/carb and MSD timing it. get rid of or exaggerate the lope?

I know...............pics.

I can't wait to see your cold air intake.

Re: Project Underfunded / next phase - LSx carb'd to LSx efi

OK....sorry for the delay guys. Had to leave the computer for a few days to get something done!

lets see Saturday...I got the -6 AN s.s. hose installed for a return line, got the fuel pump mounted, and the Corvette filter/regulator in with Russell efi adapters and -6 AN fittings - 3/8" s.s.hose...then reinstalled tank.

http://www.lsxtrucks.com/gallery/alb...l_IMG_2723.JPG

http://www.lsxtrucks.com/gallery/alb...l_IMG_2732.JPG

http://www.lsxtrucks.com/gallery/alb...l_IMG_2734.JPG

I bought lots of fittings and adapters to change my 1/2" hose and -8AN fittings to 3/8" -6AN...had leaks all over so I pulled it all out
http://www.lsxtrucks.com/gallery/alb...l_IMG_2728.JPG

built a new 3/8" s.s. hose w/-6AN ends to replace it all.
http://www.lsxtrucks.com/gallery/alb...l_IMG_2729.JPG

new fuel pump power lead being run also:
http://www.lsxtrucks.com/gallery/alb...l_IMG_2747.JPG

http://www.lsxtrucks.com/gallery/alb...l_IMG_2748.JPG

which takes it all the way to the -6AN to 3/8" Russell efi adapter and the fuel rail.
http://www.lsxtrucks.com/gallery/alb...l_IMG_2750.JPG

then it was back to the harness. I started laying everything out on the drivers side, and run the intake to the passengers side like its designed (and checking things with the extra pieces I bought)...
http://www.lsxtrucks.com/gallery/alb...l_IMG_2714.JPG

http://www.lsxtrucks.com/gallery/alb...l_IMG_2724.JPG

but....wait...there were wires to pull out of my wiring 1st....the 2 UEGO's, the MSD, electric fuel pressure, etc.
http://www.lsxtrucks.com/gallery/alb...l_IMG_2767.JPG

and with a little work I think I can make my CAI setup run to the drivers side...
http://www.lsxtrucks.com/gallery/alb...l_IMG_2754.JPG

which would put the harness end/power/ecm etc. running to the passengers....and decided I would put it on the passenger side on a shelf (need to build) on the fender. As soon as the budget allows a Vintage Air purchase...the ecm and tcm will be mounted on the firewall.
http://www.lsxtrucks.com/gallery/alb...l_IMG_2766.JPG

then they started predicting bad weather thru the weekend that could include hail. That was enough to motivate me to put the truck on wheel dollies and push it to the side (it sat in the middle of the garage and sideways) so I could bring the SS in. That put the rest of the work on hold until Sunday.

Re: Project Underfunded / next phase - LSx carb'd to LSx efi

Into the next day...with pulling the a/f gauges, the MSD box, etc....of course there was wiring changes on the inside.
http://www.lsxtrucks.com/gallery/alb...l_IMG_2768.JPG

in mocking up I checked clearance...and its either just barely touching the hood...or not.
http://www.lsxtrucks.com/gallery/alb...l_IMG_2758.JPG

so...I reworked the original wiring on the drivers side (which is going to be placed behind the fender), moved the Painless Circuit Boss toward the front, and grouped in an new wires...which came out cleaner then it was before.
http://www.lsxtrucks.com/gallery/alb...l_IMG_2774.JPG

then I mounted the new relays and fuse panel on the passenger side, and bolted the ecm/tcm together thru one bolt in the inner fender to hold them for now...until I get a shelf built that will hold them until the truck gets a/c and I flush the firewall
http://www.lsxtrucks.com/gallery/alb...l_IMG_2779.JPG
http://www.lsxtrucks.com/gallery/alb...l_IMG_2778.JPG

that left reworking the CAI...its not all locked down yet....still adjusting.
http://www.lsxtrucks.com/gallery/alb...l_IMG_2772.JPG

http://www.lsxtrucks.com/gallery/alb...l_IMG_2771.JPG

http://www.lsxtrucks.com/gallery/alb...l_IMG_2770.JPG

http://www.lsxtrucks.com/gallery/alb...l_IMG_2773.JPG

http://www.lsxtrucks.com/gallery/alb...l_IMG_2775.JPG

and with everything in under the truck and under the hood installed, hooked up, plumbed, etc.....it was time to push the pedal harness thru the firewall and push the pins into the connector, and connect the foot pedal. After that....its key on! I will need to get another pedal tho...or make a big base for this one so for now the pedal assembly is just laying in place.

So I'm looking at the schematic and pushing the pins into the connector when I get to the last pin.......and its bent! As I tried to bend it back...it just snapped in the middle. AAAAAAaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhssssshhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!! :banghead:

so.....I pushed it back over to the side and wait for parts.

I used the same Russell Quick Disconnect Fuel Fittings for my fuel rail when I installed the fuel lines in my 5.3 swap. Shortly afterwards, I started my PU and the preasure line came off when the pump preasured up. The plastic retainer clip stayed on the fuel rail and the fitting came off spraying fuel all over my engine. Luckily, my engine was cold. If this had happened while I was driving, it could have caught fire. At first I thought the fitting just wasn't seated correctly and re-installed it. It re-installed fine and re-seated correctly and did not come back off since I added a zip-tie to ensure it didn't come off. I was going to just replace the preasure fitting with a new one and when I checked the LS1 website, I came across a post listing this same problem. It appears this is becoming a common occurance with mostly the preasure side Russell quick Disconnect fitting.

I found out that Russell has a new style fitting that has a screw on c-clip retainer and will not come off. The fitting part numbers are 644120 (Summit #RUS644120) for the 3/8 preasure side and 644110 (Summit #RUS644110) for the 5/16 return line.

I called Summit and at that time, they did not have the part numbers in their system. They called Edelbrock and got the part numbers and I ordered both fittings and have replaced the ones I originally installed.

You may want to consider replacing the fuel rail preasure fittings with the newer style to prevent this from happening. Here is a photo of the new fitting.

That looks like a very clean install so far. I like the intake a lot.

Thank you for the offer....but Allen is already sending me some today.

Wow.....you mean the AN/efi fittings I just put in....those fittings, are garbage? That's about the way my purchasing usually goes...wrong part, better solution available, price reduced after my purchase............ now I'll add crappy part that needs upgrading to the list.

Thanks 'burb!

I had my fuel rail modified to just have -6 screw on connections.

Yes Kurt it did, but I had to send it off to be modified. After I thought, heck I could have done that! but oh well.

The new fittings are basically the same price as the old ones, they need to just remove the old ones and sell the new ones. I took my old ones off and threw them in the trash. As I stated earlier, my truck would have gone up in flames if that had happened while going down the road with a hot engine. I put a post on after that happened about the fittings but I don't think anyone paid any attention to it because I still see people posting photos with the old fittings on their builds. Your build looks awesome. Keep up the good work. I drive mine everyday and love it. (Over 11,000 miles now and no problems so far).

Re: Project Underfunded / next phase - LSx carb'd to LSx efi

Thanks Mike!

awhite...maybe when someone gets hurt (or worse) sues Russell....maybe they'll take those old fittings off the market.

Trying to build mine so that I can go beat on it at the track and still trust it to get me home...plus the occasional cruise.

AND BTW...........if anyone is interested in any of the LSx related components that I removed (GMPP dual plane L92/LS3 intake, MSD 6012, 2 different Holley carbs, Holley reg. 2 fuel pumps (1 NIB), 1/2" -8 AN stuff, etc. ....they're for sale. May throw in more left over from the build. I'll be posting a thread with pics and prices. Have to pay for the 4L85e somehow!

Re: Project Underfunded / next phase - LSx carb'd to LSx efi

Ok guys...need some help!

Hoping I can find out something from the knowledge pool!

I have an '09 LY6 that I'm converting back to efi from it being carb'd for the last year. I have a custom built "stand alone" harness with ecm and tcm setup for a 4L80e. There is a 200-4r in place right now so the harness ends for the ISS, VSS, and 4L80e and not connected to anything tho the harness is connected to the tcm.

I have a wiring problem I think.......just not sure. I can apply power to my Walbro external fuel pump and it run all day and build 56psi at the fuel rail. Connect it to the harness and power up the harness....and the fuel pump cuts out within 2-3 seconds. I guess I should clarify...the fuel pumps relay kicks out...the primary relay for the whole system is still active...so its somehow tied to the pumps relay. The vehicle will not start...but a little starter fluid in the throttle body and it will try to fire up and run. I've drained off the fuel in the line so that tho old fuel isn't filling the fuel rails.

Oh.....and the harness builder and tuner are not the issue and not open for discussion. Maybe at a later date once the problem is found and resolved so that everything is working as it should. I don't want this to turn into a bashing thread!

I have swapped the relays and the fuel pump relay still cuts out. So....have I got a wiring issue that needs the harness removed and sent to the builder? Or is it possible that I have an ecm problem? How do I verify the injectors are firing?

Thanks in advance!

Re: Project Underfunded / next phase - LSx carb'd to LSx efi

do you have the fuel pressure sensor wired in to the pcm if so its supposed to come on untill the rail is pressurized and then shutoff when the crank sensor reads that the engine is running under its own power

68GMCCustom 04-29-2012 03:31 PM

Re: Project Underfunded / next phase - LSx carb'd to LSx efi

don't think this harness has a fuel pressure sensor???

jfortvalley 04-29-2012 03:33 PM

Re: Project Underfunded / next phase - LSx carb'd to LSx efi

is the computer programmed for a fule pressure sensor ?

mcmlxix 04-29-2012 03:42 PM

Re: Project Underfunded / next phase - LSx carb'd to LSx efi

not sure this helps, but when you key on, the fuel pump cycles to build pressure, then doent actually run till the engine is started...

68GMCCustom 04-29-2012 04:15 PM

Re: Project Underfunded / next phase - LSx carb'd to LSx efi

not building a full 56psi in roughly 2 seconds tho.... Using the Corvette filter/regulator which doesn't have a sensor/electronics. I don't have anything on the manifold but a MAP sensor and the TB hookup. Nothing on rails but a schrader valve....so nowhere is something "electronically verifying" the fuel pressure...just the mechanical regulator in the Corvette filter/regulator

jfortvalley 04-29-2012 04:19 PM

Re: Project Underfunded / next phase - LSx carb'd to LSx efi

I would still say this is built in to the computer have you gotten far along enough to crank the motor yet ?

68GMCCustom 04-29-2012 04:23 PM

Re: Project Underfunded / next phase - LSx carb'd to LSx efi

sure...no fire. add something flammable to the intake and it tries to start.

jfortvalley 04-29-2012 04:27 PM

Re: Project Underfunded / next phase - LSx carb'd to LSx efi

when the relay KICKS out have you verified whether the 12 volts is being pulled away or the ground ?

jfortvalley 04-29-2012 04:31 PM

Re: Project Underfunded / next phase - LSx carb'd to LSx efi

oh and i use noid light to verify the injectors are firing

68GMCCustom 04-29-2012 04:48 PM

Re: Project Underfunded / next phase - LSx carb'd to LSx efi

has to be the +12v....thats the only wire for that relay that needed to be terminated....to + on pump.
