Good thing is if you really like the thought or look of clearance lights and dont have them already, you can get just about any newer style to work as well. Mine limited me since I had factory pad cab style already. There is a raised lip type mount that a flat fire hat style lamp mounts to. No other light will work there without major mod, and cut them out without major welding and painting......so I just bought fresh new lenses and went with it.
At night they look sweet and alot of comps on them.

I prefer the type you have, i.e. the ones that fit on factory pads - but had 2nd thoughts on the ones with chrome (that I thought were aftermarket) - now I know better, was nice to hear they were factory 67/68. Glad you kept the lights. I already have a decent set of fireman's hats - decisions, decisions....

Re: Educate me: What is the pupose of cab roof marker lights?

The 67/68 factory lights were also factory in prior years. And,they were offered in the aftermarket. The ones you'd buy over the parts counter from the GM Accessory catalog would come with instruction drawings showing a 60-66.

Hmmm...What's more tacky, cab lights or posting 5 or so posts offering your opinion when none were solicited, people comment about that, and you still continue? Like pulling your truck onto a hiway,it's time to get movin' on

It's just not a Truck without cab lights...not to mention how much they increase the value!!

I almost pulled the trigger on a NOS accessory cab light set recently offered for sale but couldn't do it. For my K20 it had to be an original cab light cab. Anyone here have a GM cab with marker lights AND bucket seats (I did add OEM GM brackets and seats :))? Can't be many of those on the road anymore. BTW - I'm thinking SS Tim can show us the gamut of light types offered from 67-72. Post 'em up Tim!

Re: Educate me: What is the pupose of cab roof marker lights?

I've got two trucks now with factory marker lamps, a K-10 and a C-30 ... neither truck shows any sign of leakage into the roof, however, on both trucks I get moisture inside the lens (on top of the rubber mounting pads) - which oddly is isolated to one light only. Can't seem to stop it and it doesn't get in the roof so I don't worry about it

I like the style like those on Joes Junk. I am not a fan of the hockey puck style.

That's just an opinion, not to be confused with anything that that could cause hate and discontent among the brethren.

Since I cannot do a full history of marker lamps off the cuff and without research I instead offer this wonderful drawing from the 70 chassis service manual of pucks and teardrops.

As far as the light go I really like them and for the longest time tried to find a set small enough to put on my 72 Vega panel truck. Figured if it had to have commercial plates then it should have lights. That was then, now a set of fender repeater lamps would work great but my last Vega left years ago.

I don't have a truck with buckets and cab lights now,but have had three overall...'69 K/10 CST Custom Camper,'70 CST/30 Custom Camper,and '71 K/10 SWB Cheyenne Super.

I sold my '71 K/10 SWB Custom Deluxe project last year that was going to appear as a 69/70 Super Custom Fenderside K/3500 (as if).I had bucket seats and a cab light/ac cab for it,as well as many other cool goodies, including everything to make an 8-lug short bed Fenderside trailer. Oh well....The 1t stuff and cab are slated for my '72 K2500 Sierra now. I decided to stay with bench seat to be more practical and useful. Yeah,my thinking has changed in more recent years

Thanks Tim! BTW - Were the Unity pillar mounted lamps ever a factory option or always a dealer/aftermarket accessory. I like those also but couldn't bring myself to have the pillar cut on my K20.

A K10 Custom Camper and a 71 K10 SWB Super with buckets and cab lights?! Where do you find this stuff....I want one! I get it on the bench seat....can't slide women up against you if there's a console in the way - in that sense bucket seats are kinda like birth control.

Re: Educate me: What is the pupose of cab roof marker lights?

I've toned down my excitement for having a truck with everything under the sun. I still love seeing trucks like that, but don't care if I own one. I have had to have people sit on consoles and these days won't do that (no seat belt). I want to be able to haul three people if I have to. It's more important to me now to be able to have a dog ride along, lay down, and not have his forelegs slide off the console when I stop than to have people say,"Wow,it has buckets" :). If I had several trucks like I used to it would be different. I have buddy buckets for my '67,so I'm happy. Also,I sold my buckets for the '72 because I had a perfectly good Saddle Sierra seat that had been sitting in my shop since '04 and I got over $1000 for the buckets, console, and covers. I sold the N.O.S. tissue dispenser and shoulder belts, too, and it all adds up. Still have the N.O.S. steering wheel that I can't bring myself to sell or use!

The '69 I found in Virginia back in '82 near a friend's house sitting in a field. That truck had remarkable options like I've seen on no other truck. I knew what I had but till more recently didn't know just how rare. Sold it because I prefer K/20s. And,the '71 I found in Arizona in the Truck Locator in '80,when I lived in the Flagstaff area. By then I was aware of what options were available and started seeking the higher optioned/rare trucks. In the little time I lived in AZ I think I bought like 8 trucks. I sold all but two when I came back East and went back a few years later to get the two I hung onto,a '70 CST Blazer and the '71 above.

The spot lamp was available as a factory option as well as a GM accessory

the damn things are on my 08 duramax. if it didnt cost so much to remove them, patch the holes and repaint the roof id have taken them off already. i just prefer the clean look. ive seen trucks that looked decent with them on occasionally, its just not my thing.

i think its because i grew up in farm country, and to many of the guys in school that had dads money to play with COVERED there nice new 30+k trucks in lights to the point of resembling a semi. my dad has driven semi my whole life and never had near as many lights on his rig.

I'm wanting to put some of the smoked style like LMC has on the 71.

May put them on my 82 3/4 ton as well

Yeah like this kids ride. A bit too much for me:

Re: Educate me: What is the pupose of cab roof marker lights?

5 cab clearance lamps on the right truck is pure class and not to be mistaken for tacky overload on additional lighting. I ordered them when I got my '92 K3500 SRW because it just seems right on a one ton. The square body SRWs came with them and 5 on the tailgate, even though not mandated (normal width and under 5t GVW). I put the same type GM put on DRW on my tailgate, but just the three center ones because I didn't like that the factory got cheap and stopped putting them on. It marks it as a one ton IMO. I've had a Reading steel work cap on it since '06 and after much considertion I just yesterday ordered two amber and two red to mount in the upper side corners of the cap. Looking at it at night it just seems to complete the package and purpose of marking the outer lines of the truck. It's a commercial vehicle and the cap increased the overall height of the truck and you wouldn't know it's there at night. If I hadn't already put the three on the tailgate I would also be putting three on the back of the cap at the top. I don't want to over due it. Just put them where they would be required if it were a slightly higher GVW. I'd never want these on a shortbed 2wd or even certain 4wds. But I really want them on my '72 K2500 because they are kings of the pickups, the biggest baddest most capable of what was offered. That, and I'll also be putting 1t axles and 3500 badges on it to make it a phantom K3500. I may also mount three on the step bumper under the tailgate. It's a truck thing. If I have to explain, you wouldn't understand.

I was wondering exactly what they were for. I had ideas but wasn't sure. Good info. Brings the question tho - would a camper bump into them or are they far enough forward?

I was taught to drive in a 79 1ton dually 454/400 and all ways loved the cab lights on it, it also had full length running boards with lights in them and thought they just completed the look of the truck.
Also have had many 1 tons and they would just not look right to me if they were not on there.

So new question, just got home with a '67 C-30 parts truck, which is a factory DRW but has no roof lights - should it have had them originally?

Depends on the design of slide in camper but yes many would clear the cab above lights and extend forward over the cab lights.

Re: Educate me: What is the pupose of cab roof marker lights?

A camper leaves enough clearance for cab lights. I believe cab marker lamps were mandated on trucks over 5t beginning in '69. In other words they dropped the minimum weight to include 1 tons, but only DRW were 10,000#. Some states already required them prior to that.
