Re: Exhaust, duels, crossover, H pipe, or Y pipe?
I 100% agree with BR3W CITY... Duals are available in many configurations. H-pipe, X-pipe, Cat-Back, Merge and split, ect.
TRUE DUALS are what we did in high school straight off the manifolds and out the back. Mufflers were optional. I even know a guy that used pipes from an old, cheap swing set. Swing set pipes make a different, pingy kind of sound! CT |
Re: Exhaust, duels, crossover, H pipe, or Y pipe?
One knock I've heard about true duals is that it sounds like 2 4cyl engines. I was thinking of have to run either a H or X pipe so I would not have this effect. Since i have no reference to go off of, can you guys who run true duals elaborate on your sound. Thanks!

Re: Exhaust, duels, crossover, H pipe, or Y pipe?
If mine sounds like two four cylinder engines, then each of those engines is a badass.
TBSS manifolds to 2.5" true dual pipes, to (1) blowmaster resonator, then dump out the sides. The biggest gripe is the drone, which when combining flowmasters with straight pipes AND putting the resonator right under the cab....means plenty of it. I sound deadened and put a good stereo in tho, so its actually very tolerable. These two are videos from my Photobucket. This is off a cell phone back when we first had it tuned. http://i112.photobucket.com/albums/n..._VIDEO0004.jpg http://i112.photobucket.com/albums/n..._VIDEO0005.jpg And this is on a better set of cameras, cruising around in-cab. Re: Exhaust, duels, crossover, H pipe, or Y pipe?
Ill put up a clip of mine with shorty headers and super 44s before I swap in the spintech 9000s I got yesterday!
both duals with a h pipe and dumped before the rear axle. |

on the true dual sounding like 2 4cylinders I would say that is something that comes out with side exits. If you are close to one side or the other you don't get a full v8 sound. that said it it still doesn't sound like a 4banger. look up side tubes like the ones put on corvettes and you will hear it. |
Re: Exhaust, duels, crossover, H pipe, or Y pipe?
2.25 x pipe to 2.5 mufflers and tails, used muffler back that was on the big block
pretty sure it was this kit: http://www.summitracing.com/parts/sum-642122/overview/ Jay |

Re: Exhaust, duels, crossover, H pipe, or Y pipe?
Questions:
1) what are the advantages of the H pipe 2) What is the best location for the H pipe? It looks like there is only room for one after the trans like in the pic on the first page. |
Re: Exhaust, duels, crossover, H pipe, or Y pipe?
Any crossover like an h allows the exhaust to cross paths, which helps with exhaust scavenging, takes some of the harshness and *snap* out of the tone. This is how modern exhausts are designed, and thus what would be "expected" on an LS motor. Not running one is ok as well, but as mentioned, there are a couple of percievable drawbacks.
Right after the trans is the common place for one, since its the first place where there is usually room to run a 2"+ pipe. Anywhere under the cab should be fine. |
Re: Exhaust, duels, crossover, H pipe, or Y pipe?
So my buddy just installed a 4.8 in his truck and started with the stock manifolds and ran duals straight out the back. It sounded good but a little harsh and it had a bad resonance or drone at speed. He went back in and added a small cross over and it changed it a ton. It no long has that drone and sounds good. No other changes. That said I would always suggest a cross over of some type.
His was a 2 1/2 inch system with about an 1 1/2 inch cross over "H" style pipe. Dave |
Re: Exhaust, duels, crossover, H pipe, or Y pipe?
I'm a fan of the x-pipe. I've had enough loud cars (solid lifter BBO with straight 3" true duals out the sides in front of the tires, lol) to be able to appreciate some mellow tones. I used a 2.5" summit x-pipe kit. added in some hedman s-bends and some turndowns and you got a full mandrel bent exhaust for like $200 (minus mufflers)

Re: Exhaust, duels, crossover, H pipe, or Y pipe?
Heres a crappy phone video of my spintech 9000s.
They sound SOO much better than the super 44s and not nearly as loud and annoying as they are advertised to be. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TmuOUt9ex9I |
