Why did they switch to single wall? Cheaper?

Wish I knew for certain. I'd speculate that the double wall tops were sagging and required the owner of a CST to remove the rear panels before top removal (a pita) so GM tried a new design ahead of the 73 model year. Thus far the data shows that single wall tops were used for only a portion of the 72 MY and only on K5s built at flint.

A first for the record???

St Louis built 72 Blazer seq # 146724 that looks to be a near survivor and has a 1x wall top. On the hunt for additional St Louis built k5s that have the reasonable expectation of being originally outfitted with a 1x wall top.

I believe that 72 was the only year, that had double wall. With the ribbing running side to side. That's the way my three were configured. 69 4wd, 71 4wd
72 2wd highlander grapefruit yellow w/avocado cst.
Just a theory.

Here's a transition Flint built Blazer that has a single wall top and lacks speaker holes atop the dash so uses a below dash speaker. This truck has a November assembly month per the blue door vin decal. Sequence # 127656

Any single wall St Louis survivors?

Here's my tag, built June of 72. Single wall top and speaker on the top of the dash just like the pickups.

Thanks for posting. June is late in the model year - makes me wonder who on the board has the last 72 that rolled off the assembly line...

Clean looking 2wd on eBay (https://www.ebay.com/itm/1972-Chevro...temCondition=4) - Flint built 1x wall top w speaker below the dash. Looks reasonably unmolested. Not best image of the dash top.

Sequence # 156067

My Blazer has a build date of 3/72 with swt and the radio speaker up under the dash between the defrost vents. Has a higher vin number, can that even be possible ???

Re: So when in 1972 did GM start installing single wall tops?

Thanks for posting. If the ochre is correct, it suggests the switch to an internal dash speaker like a pickup happened between 156067 and 165204 at Flint.

The double wall top was dropped for a single wall top. Later in the model year, the traditional K5 dash was phased out for the pickup style with a speaker grill. Interesting.

I have or had 3 72' Flint Blazers. Spids below. One came with a double wall the other two are or were single wall. Only the DW Blazer still has the blue door tag but I can't make out the date on it. The other one has been painted over. All three did not have speaker grill in top of dash.

Helpful info - thanks for posting. Let me guess, SPID for sequence # 111983 was the 2x wall example?

Your info would narrow down the dash change to between 160889 - 165204

That narrows the switch from double wall tops to single wall tops between sequence numbers 111,983 - 112,592. These numbers must be within a day or so of each other in terms or rolling off the line as finished vehicles.
