Looks close. I took these for reference points for you. SB, 1" spacer, 4" tall air cleaner. Camera on rad support, hood closed. Using the washer hose hole as reference, your air cleaner looks close. After looking at these pics, I've got to get my engine bay cleaned up!

Thanks for going to the trouble to take pics I will check it out using the hole as a reference. If anyone has a lid they want to sell let me know.

That '72 Z28 cleaner has the right look. Does it have an indentation to clear an HEI?

I can’t say mine was original to the car but it has clearance for HEI. I would think the 70-72 would not have clearance.

Yep that’s what the original lid looked like. It is long gone, stolen from my moms shed about 25 years ago. I can get a new one but I can only find them on the Corvette websites for $100. I don’t want one that bad.

Keep watching the parts sites and EBay- I got this one off EBay for way less than $100. its got some pitting but will polish up decent.

Knowing that an open element allows for about 10 more HP, any dual inlet air filter I install will have to have the bigger snorkels like the Z/28 style. If I make an L79 style with the pre-'67 housings I have, they will get the fat inlets

I think that that is the best option, because I don't like the secondary roar like the cold air adapter that connects to the cowl would allow. I'm getting old, it's true! I'd still try to find a colder air source, though. Maybe I should look at the clearance between the radiator support and the hood for some cooler air. I have an '05 Corolla that I put a cold air intake on that fed air to the carburetor from where the driving lights would have been mounted in the front bumper. In 117 degree weather, that Corolla had a lot of trouble pulling the last hill home without dropping out of overdrive and sometimes actually dropping out of 4th gear. With that colder air, it could pull that hill without doing either. It gained me about .3 MPG, too (actually measured). I made it out of 2" ABS drain pipe pieces for a total cost of maybe $15. Over the 9 years that I commuted to work with it, I'm pretty sure I got that investment back.

I picked this up from a mid 70's Vette, It was set up for cowl induction so I am running my original aircleaner top which lets me run a 3.5" tall filter. I had to put it on a 1 inch spacer to clear the Demon carb.
