Re: LY6/TR6060 Swap from a 5.3/4L60E

Hello to all. The LY6/TR6060 is bolted down and runs by the E38 ecm. My tuner friend gave me a base line tune, it runs like crap, but the engine runs. I ha a old harness lying around so I modified to run the engine. Also, moving forward, I had to scrap the idea of running the clutch fan. I just don’t have the space or the time to play with it. With the the swap, other issues have come into play, such as drive shaft clearance. I achieved the perfect drive angle 2-3 degrees, by mounting an angle finder on the valley cover, under the intake manifold. For this drive shaft to spin, the cab floor may need to be modified.

Level 7 Motorsports recently released a modified version high hump specifically for T56 trans. The page advertises:

"Our high hump transmission cover is a reproduction of the factory high hump cover, but extended further back to completely cover a Tremec T56 Magnum 6 Speed transmission. You will also have room to get the transmission up high enough to get pinion angles correct on a truck that has been significantly lowered. In the photos you will see the factory steel cover that we used to extend and how they install."

@Tork?, thanks for the information. I'll checked it out and I may need more length. I may need to clearance the entire cab to accommodate the drive shaft. or maybe lower the motor, make it sit lower in the engine bay. I'm going thru a lot of changes to make this thing work. ill post pics when I can.

Today was a great day. PSA, the TR6060 will stay in its place.

Last week I contemplated going back to the 4L60E due to not having the proper drive angle, having room for drive shaft clearance, and cutting up the cab floor. Once I reassessed everything the Tr6060 will stay. The motors and transmission are in and it runs. But, since the tuner benched tune the ecm the idle is high, plus the pcm needs all the sensors to properly run. I did not have coolant the block, no maf, no o2 senors plus the throttle pedal wasn’t responding. Here are some pics.

A few more. In this pic, I am using a sonnax adapter. The sonnax adapter will be used with a telescoping driveshaft. The driveshaft will have the slip yoke due to the fact that the TR6060 has a fixed yoke. I can adapt the the TR6060 for a fixed yoke by retrofitting the tail shaft of a T56 but that will cost some major coins. I’m cheap. I’ll just buy the telescoping driveshaft.

I have one of those shafts with a good slip section sitting in the garage. I would donate it to your cause if you like. I think it has 1310 style U joints. I also have a piece of a front shaft with a good "Cardan" joint. Leftovers from a 2wd swap. The slip shaft is off of a 4 spd shortbed 4x4 1970.

As far a the pedal height I made a sure I had a clean clutch release then I made some adjustments to the pedal height to match the brake pedal. See attached pics.

Very clean well laid out install. Where did you source the master cylinder from?

Nice progress. I’m planning on using the Sonnax adapter as well. I hadn’t though of the telescoping driveshaft. Is that necessary?

@splatrd, the captain fab kit cam with the master cylinder. Its an awesome kit.
@Tork? yes its needed unless you convert the tr6060 to accept an slip yoke drive shaft but its expensive. @JJzepplin, thanks for the offer. I bought a new drive shaft. my driveshaft was 55 inches long, from the center of the sonnax adapter the center of the yoke on the rear end.

Re: LY6/TR6060 Swap from a 5.3/4L60E

Just to update, I ordered an wiring harness off ebay. one of the cheap ones, but its actually ok. the throttle pedal is not responding, but it wasn't responding with my jerry rigged harness. the ecm is mounted, and I started wiring for the relays, check engine light fuel pump, etc. that stuff will go quick. The transmission are connected but I bought a cooler for the tr6060 to keep the transmission temps cooler. the drive shaft seems to have some interference with the cab as it slides thru the loop hole. I cant install the rear of the drive shaft. to clear the cab I think I gotta cut a recess on for drive shaft to have clearance.

Re: LY6/TR6060 Swap from a 5.3/4L60E

Update. I’m driving. I completed a LY6/TR6060 swap into my truck. The ecm was flashed by a local tuner to handle crank and run function until the tuner can finalize the tune. The truck runs and drive ok but it keeps throwing a DTC P0102. Can anyone help me? Since throwing the code I have replaced the MAF (3) times. On the MAF connector plug schematics say it should be wired
A to J1(41)
B to key on Ignition
C to ground
D to J1(37)
E to J1(38)

What is my next step? If I can’t resolve the issue I am going buy another harness and ecm, flashed from another vendor. Everything I have, I pieced it from spare parts I’ve collected over the years. Thanks in advance, Clark

How did you end up handling the driveshaft interference?

Re: LY6/TR6060 Swap from a 5.3/4L60E

@tork? I ended modifying the transmission mount and sliding the engine back.
the drive angle may be 6-7 degrees, but decided to live with it and see how it affects drivability and performance.

Re: LY6/TR6060 Swap from a 5.3/4L60E

When I did the LS/T56 magnum in my 68 I had to trim the trailing arm cross member for drive shaft clearance. I was able to get the engine angle down to 3.5 degrees. Stock high hump. Hind site 20/20 I would of lowered the engine just so the oil pan cleared the steering and wasn't below the engine cross member.

Re: LY6/TR6060 Swap from a 5.3/4L60E

I've got the stock V8 stands and used the adapter type plates that are about 1/4" and F Body oil pan. Seems I will not have any issues with drive line angles. But then, Mine also has leaf springs. I wanted to keep the trailing arm setup but it was not stock to this frame and left other challenges. I had the leaf spring already sitting over in the yard so boom. I figured that my Nova's And Camaro's have them and they handle fine with a couple upgrades. My trans crossmember is a custom unit purchased on Ebay and my trans is really close to the floorboard and most likely will need to cut the floorboard for the shifter and use the above custom high hump. Driveline angles look to be very nice. I guess you could use a Cardan Joint if the angle is still unacceptable. I have a big one ton Cardan Joint on the rear of my 4x4 for wheeling and it has never given me any trouble.

Re: LY6/TR6060 Swap from a 5.3/4L60E

I was going to suggest the double cardan u-joint if you have issues. On my LS6 swapped 98 Wrangler I have had one on the rear and it's been over 10 years with no issues. I got mine from Denny's Drive Shaft shop.

Re: LY6/TR6060 Swap from a 5.3/4L60E

Which shifter plate and mechanism are you using with the TR6060 to use that forward shift position?
How long is the shifter arm? Is it lokar or Hurst?

Re: LY6/TR6060 Swap from a 5.3/4L60E

@pauljones1, I made my own shifter. i put together some pieces of metal drom (3) different shifter and welded them together. Im gonna make the the final shifter. but I have been driving it for a year and just having fun with it. The shifter plate/base is a short throw shifter, with no offsets. when i get the name i will post it. I also was having problems with E38 PCM and i currently use FiTech Ultimate 70050.

I wanna say the shifter base came from (3) Pedals
