The engine computer from the 4.3 would be better if its the 7747 computer, it can be re-programmed by the laptop. If everything is ok other than the "too much fuel", try narrowing the fuel injector pulse to compensate.
The air cleaner can also be a restriction - use a taller filter rather than the stock "spectre" filter in the photos. The air has to make too sharp of a turn and can send the fuel against the intake walls causing a rich condition when it gets to the cylinder. If I remember right, a fram ca3588 or a ca192 are a direct replacement. |

Thanks I will look into that. The filter I have on it now is even smaller so its probably worse.

I have been considering this for some time and just stumbled onto your post. It looks great:metal: Any updates? My truck has the 292 and I have a clifford intake and a pair of headers for it, just trying to decide if the fuel injection is the way to go or bite the bullet and purchase a new carb for said manifold. I have a turbo that I plan on installing and think the injection would be more forgiving.

6 cyl TBI conversions are relatively straightforward. The devil's in the details, of course. The way the OP modified the distributor is acceptable, the 4.3 TB is appropriately sized, and the heated O2 helps but shouldn't be needed. I'm not sure why the OP decided the stock ecm wouldn't work, there are plenty of EFI retrofits using early car or truck ecm's. The issue boils down to tuning... adjusting the parameters in the chip so the stock ecm works properly with a different size engine with some very different characteristics than the engine it was originally programmed for. As I read this post it seems like the OP followed a path that many others do: Retrofit efi with stock ecm and programming, try different combinations of stock parts to try and obtain acceptable performance from stock programming, come to grips with need to tune. If you're doing an EFI swap on a vintage engine consider tuning an essential part of the job.

I know this is an older post, but I had question about o2 sensor placement. Since he was running the dual split headers like my setup, I didn't know if it was best to have the o2 where the headers merge or have a sensor on each header end? I've been looking at the newer Holly sniper or Ftech kits, and wanted to know what the best placement would be to get a proper reading.

Putting the O2 sensor where the pipes merge usually gives the most accurate readings. Sometimes when you do this the sensor is far enough away from the engine that it cools off so a heated sensor is required. GM ran the O2 sensor in one pipe on many, many of their V6 and V8 engines and it worked fine. I did this with my '57. It will work with a TBI truck as well but if you're looking at installing a system with port injection and dual bank fuel trims you will want two sensors.
