I would put a stepside bed on there and keep the original axles to

Oops did what again Crash'd Artwerks?

j.kirn, I love the look of the long step on the 4wd, but am really liking the thought of the flatbed on there too. It's not like I have to decide right now, LOTS of other things need to happen first. Thanks for the input!!

Re: '60 GMC 4x4 Long Fenderside

I vote for the long step and stock axles too! It will be wayyy cooler like that, keep it original man!

Around here, a rollbed runs $60.00. I don't remember how far they will go for that amount. Have you checked what the going rate is in your area?

Sorry, that didn't type out very clear. It's $70 per year, and a one time $10 charge.

I won't have to worry about her driving. She is actually my step-daughter, and her mother and I are in the process of divorcing. When my two kids (14 and 12) get to driving, then it definitely does sound like a great idea. I am going to look into it a little more, and see if the discounts they offer, may make it worthwhile anyway.

Thank you again for the idea, that is definitely one I had not even thought about.

Re: '60 GMC 4x4 Long Fenderside

Thanks for the info Captainfab. I was hoping to get some suggestions from people on here on who to call before I called anyone. I talked to a couple of people at work who gave me a couple of suggestions. I am planning on calling them today to get pricing.

1985-GMC, I'll probably keep the stock axles, as long as they are in good order. I may need to re-gear them to be able to run freeway speeds though.

The long-step vs. flatbed debate will probly rage around in my head until the truck gets further along.

I was digging through all the pictures on my computer last night, and found this one of the back of the truck. When I saw the grind marks on the frame, I remembered that the back of the bed had some "L" shaped metal (bent flat steel) welded to the cross member. They had a piece of metal shaped like an arc in between them. I cut them off because they were not stock, and POORLY welded on there.

You probably cannot see it in the smaller picture, but the diff cover says 9" Ford (that was hard to type). Does the rear end look stock to you guys, or do I have some inter-species mixing going on?

Still waiting on a response from my attorney on taking the truck. If I get the go ahead, I should have it with me within the next week or so!! :metal:

Sorry the picture is rotated. Apparently, I needed a V8 that day. LOL

Played with drawing a flatbed on there in AutoCAD. The little plus signs are meant to be diamond plate. I was thinking of using stock tail lights and reverse lights to tie the old in with the new.

The perspective is a little off in the picture, and it is just a quick sketch, but gives the general idea of matching it to the body lines of the cab.

Let me know what you think.

Its a dana 44, somebody is a jokester.

Re: '60 GMC 4x4 Long Fenderside

Yep that rear end is a Dana 44. Very common under 1/2 ton GMC's. In fact your front end should also be a Dana 44.

Ok, I got the OK from the legal people, and they said I have every right to go get my truck. It has been titled in my name ONLY for the last 9 years, and was never in her name. I had a Sheriff's Deputy standing by (he said it was all legal too) just in case she showed up, or was there and got crazy.

It went smooth as silk. Backed in to the driveway, drug it up on the trailer, and booked out of there. She wasn't there, so no drama or problems!!

In the pictures below, there is a F@rd pulling my truck home, but it is only out of necessity. He had a trailer, and the truck with the pintle hitch.

Got it home, and rolled it off of the trailer and NO BRAKES!!! Good thing there wasn't anything behind us. Then we pushed it up in the garage, safe and sound!!

Now the real fun begins!!! :metal:

Re: '60 GMC 4x4 Long Fenderside

Lucky it fit in the garage! Im glad you got her home safe and sound! Congrats!

Re: '60 GMC 4x4 Long Fenderside

Thanks Bradley!

It was close on the height, but cleared by a couple of inches!! I was sweating it, as we were rolling it up the driveway. Just as we were rolling into the garage, I though about that I should have double checked the height! LOL Glad she fit!

Now I need a name for it!

You all are amazingly creative people, any suggestions?? I would like to have something that refers to the truck. Something to do with GMC, or 4x4, or K1002, etc. Blondie_k and I were referring to her truck as Luna-C before that all went to crap, so something along those lines.

Baby Blue Bastard? :D

Babe The Blue Ox?

Big Blue?

Bruised And Abused?

chevy_man5 09-22-2011 06:01 PM

Re: '60 GMC 4x4 Long Fenderside

I like Babe!! Especially if it was staying blue!

Color plans (at this point) are dark charcoal from the body line just under the door handle, and a few shades lighter above that, with a Harley orange pin stripe to separate them.

Re: '60 GMC 4x4 Long Fenderside

Glad to hear you got your truck home and in the garage without issue......even if it took a f@&d to make it happen

Babe the big blue OX:metal: ..... The Charcoal ox???? well maybe not.
It is hard to name a truck until you know it's personality..

When daughter named her 64 (Lola ) , I asked her "is it a male or girl truck"???
Her reply was; "it is now trans-gendered," after the tranny -swap took place..:uhmk::uhmk::uhmk:

Glad you have it home with no issues

j.kirn, I love your truck!! Do you have any more recent pictures of it. It is the reason I was/am debating the wide tires vs. skinny tires.

Putting wide tires is hard on any steering components, especially the original axle,i do need to take some updated pics of truck maybe this weekend. I WOULD LOVE TO SEE YOUR TRUCK PUT BACK THE WAY IT CAME ORIGINALL. However you do it you can be proud of this truck, very rare gmc 4 wheeel drive

Here are some more pictures of what I am starting with.

The beastly 305A V6.

http://67-72chevytrucks.com/gallery/...00/305A_V6.jpg

And a little redneck engineering from a P.O. Would assume it is not my buddies handiwork, but who knows in a pinch, you do what you have to do.

http://67-72chevytrucks.com/gallery/...ngineering.jpg

Dash

http://67-72chevytrucks.com/gallery/data/500/Dash_1.jpg

More dash. When I parked it, the radio still worked. It took a few minutes to warm up, by then it came in almost as clear as my modern truck.

http://67-72chevytrucks.com/gallery/data/500/Dash_2.jpg

Even more dash.

http://67-72chevytrucks.com/gallery/data/500/Dash_3.jpg

Glovebox with the cardboard still in it! Not sure if it is a replacement, but good to have either way!

http://67-72chevytrucks.com/gallery/.../Glovebox2.jpg

Floor

http://67-72chevytrucks.com/gallery/...or_Drivers.jpg

http://67-72chevytrucks.com/gallery/...Floor_Pass.jpg

http://67-72chevytrucks.com/gallery/...oor_Center.jpg

Somebody wrote an “L” under the paint under the hood

http://67-72chevytrucks.com/gallery/...under_hood.jpg

Some goodies that came along with the truck.

http://67-72chevytrucks.com/gallery/.../Goodies_1.jpg

http://67-72chevytrucks.com/gallery/.../Goodies_2.jpg

Both of these have the GMC logo on them.

http://67-72chevytrucks.com/gallery/.../Goodies_3.jpg

A full gasket kit for the engine! I guess if it needs it, this is the way to go!! After sitting for so long (9+ years) will the gasket set still be good? The box is unopened, so I would assume that the plastic is still around the gaskets inside.

http://67-72chevytrucks.com/gallery/.../Goodies_4.jpg

http://67-72chevytrucks.com/gallery/.../Goodies_5.jpg

I guess the rear diff says 74 F@rd, not 9" F@rd.

Re: '60 GMC 4x4 Long Fenderside

SHE LIVES!!!!!!

Pulled out the plugs, put in some Marvel Oil, let it sit. Turned it over by hand a few times, and it rolled over smoothly. Cleaned and gapped the plugs took the battery out of my work truck, poured a little gas in the carb, and cranked it over for a bit, then she fired up...for a couple of seconds.

Re: '60 GMC 4x4 Long Fenderside

Lightened up the truck quite a bit yesterday morning and this evening.

Removed pounds of bondo. It was still semi soft in the middle. It has been there at least 11-12 years as far as I know. I have had the truck for 9 years, and my buddy had it for a couple prior to that.

It is on there a little thick!

Passenger side pile.

http://67-72chevytrucks.com/gallery/...601_Small_.JPG

Drivers side pile. The hammer is 12" long for reference.

Scored a near perfect 60-61 GMC hood, a factory fan shroud (not sure if it is for my 60 or not, but the price was right), MOST of a cab to frame mount kit, and most of a radiator core support mount kit.

Got all of these for a decent price. I am pretty excited about getting these!

I had to unload the hood by myself, so this is the best picture I can get for tonight. The shroud is a little rough around the edges, and has a little surface rust, but it's only metal right!

I posted his craigslist ad in the main 60-66 forum, so anyone looking could see if he has what you need. He has more than what he has listed. I have never met him before this evening.

Thanks Steve! Working a little at a time.

Just got the rebuild kit for the Holley.

My son and I took the gas tank out Sunday to drain it. There was what looked like nasty orange Kool-aid in there. 5 gallons of it! Its only been in there for 9 years +. LOL Oh well!!
