Do you have a sport bumper on that long bed?

Considering we went to the moon in 69, my guess is the PO really was patriotic. Unless he just recently painted it and isn't the origianl owner -. yikes |

I made a polishing video for my friends on another forum. The sound quality sucks, but I didn't ave a video camera and my friend did. If you have any questions about supplies or equipment, shoot me a message and I'd be glad to answer anything you need to know. -JOsh |

I hate mornings!! I work second shift and it's so hard to motivate myself to get up early and get anything done. I pulled the right front wheel of and polished it. I also had to replace 3 of the wheel studs.

Re: Captain America 68 short/fleetside
Nice work on the wheels!!

I finally got back on point and swapped the engine and trans out of the S10 Blazer and into the 68. It's only setting there for now, but atleast it's in.

Not too much progress on the Tiger clad beast, but I picked up a sweet hood for $40. It's in much better shape than the original one, AND it doesn't have glitter on it!!!

I bought a Power booster from ebustos and I put a Corvette style master cylinder on the Captain today. To my surprise, the original lines fit the new master. I thought I'd have to mix and match brake lines, but I just had to take a few bends out of the brake lines to strectch out to compensate for the booster.

My own build thread depresses me. I really haven't done much to my own truck. Today, aside from getting a wicked sunburn, I tackled a few things on my path to roadworthiness. I robbed the seat tracks from the bench seat and attached them to the driver's side bucket seat from my S10. I had to fab up link to connect the adjustment mechanisms.
Then, 2 good friends came by and got me really motivated. They fabbed up a battery tray from my rotted out tray, even making a battery hold down bracket. I have mounted the aluminum radiator, and replaced the radiator hoses and the serpentine belt and tensioner. With the battery in place, and the wiring rerouted and loomed, we fired up the beast (open headers!!) and burned off some of the paint on the junkyard headers. I know it's still got a ways to go before it glitters down the street in the Florida sunshine, but I feel a lot better about the progress we made today. -Josh |
Re: Captain America 68 short/fleetside
A little bit at a time will add up.
If it helps, you can copy/take my avatar to use - I'd get a different one. It's Captain America's symbol, would go good with your thread/build. |

Re: Captain America 68 short/fleetside
Does anyone know if it's possible to push the steering column closer/ further into the dash to give me more room in the cab. Being 6'5", I could use all the room I can get. Thanks.
-JOsh |
Re: Captain America 68 short/fleetside
yes there are a couple threads on how to do it
|
Re: Captain America 68 short/fleetside
:agree:
you collapse the shaft between the bottom of the column and the steering box. |
Re: Captain America 68 short/fleetside
and move the neutral safety switch, Eric did it on ES67 build http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=330869

Re: Captain America 68 short/fleetside

Re: Captain America 68 short/fleetside
That is one wild looking truck, both inside and out! I think its cool and funky, but I don't blame you for wanting to make it a little more stock. The glitter is so heavy i thought it looked like dirt until I got a closer look!
|
Re: Captain America 68 short/fleetside
I don't think it's a good deal at all!! I tried to shorten the steering shaft, and ended up pulling the entire steering column out of the truck. If I had known, I would have done this when I had the front clip off the truck. My other problem is I didn't measure anything before I pulled it out!!!! Oh well, I"ll try again and see what happens. Thanks for everyone's advice and assistance.
-Josh |
Re: Captain America 68 short/fleetside
Not sure why my other post was here....weird? Sorry for the issues you're having.
I'd just collapse the shaft and then it moves up and down fairly freely...bolt it to the rag joint and to the column and with the column loosely mounted move it to where you want it then bolt it down tight inside and outside... |
Re: Captain America 68 short/fleetside

Well it was fairly simple. Just never having done one before had me second guessing myself. I replaced the rag joint while I was in there, shortened the column by about 3-4 inches. In the before picture, the dash panel isn't secured, so it's dangling about an inch or 2 out from the dash. In te after pic, the dash panel is properly mounted.
Thanks for everyone's elp and advice. -Josh |

I bought some new rear tires and started checking out my brakes. 3 of the 4 wheel cylinders are leaking, and the right rear wheel seal was pouring. Local parts stores don't really have the parts I"m looking for to make my repairs. I found the left rear wheel cylinder, and that's the only one not leaking!! Snyone got any leads for parts?? I"m keeping the 4-wheel dru setup for now, until I decide to upgrade to 4-wheel disc.
While replacing the wheel seals, I found out my rear gear is a 3.73, but not a posi. The new tires are 275/60r15 BF Goodrich Radial T/As. I have a pair of 235/70R15's for the front that I need to have mounted. One of these days, I"ll polish the right rear wheel!! -Josh |
Re: Captain America 68 short/fleetside
Try rockauto.com. Member Bmerdoc told me he just got all new 4 wheels worth of drum brake parts off there for cheap...
|
Re: Captain America 68 short/fleetside
Thanks for the head's up. I got everything I needed for $38.00!! I swapped out the wheel cylinders. Of course, the only one that wasn't leaking is the one that broke the brake line. I both star adjuster wheels on the front axle were frozen, so I got those too.

My dad got some cool Low-back bucket seats for his 59 Chevy pickup, so he handed down his old racing seats. I installed them, and then we trailered the Captain to a friend's shop to get the exhaust installed. I've got the long tube headers and Magnaflows with pipes that will exit in front of the rear wheels. When I get the other bed installed, I want to run the exhaust tips through the bedsides in front of the rear wheels.
Two things that are bothering me. #1. When I replaced the hood, I broke the part of the old hood that latches into the hood latch assembly, and I can't find anywhere that sells it. After I broke it off, I realized it was attached to the plate that comes off with 4 bolts. #2, I've had my truck running, albeit with open headers, but it fired up every time. Today, the truck fired up, but then fizzled out, like someone was unplugging spark plug wires one at a time. I verified 12 volts to the distributor (HEI), even swapped out the coil, and eventually swapping out the entire distributor with a known good distributor, and still no spark. Any ideas?? -Josh |
Re: Captain America 68 short/fleetside
#3 With the key off, I have 6 volts running through some wires, and it's killing my battery. The previous owner literally twisted wires together and wrapped them in electrical tape. The ignition wires about 3 inches off the switch are taped up that way.

Re: Captain America 68 short/fleetside
I got my truck back from my friend's house, albeit with a gas can on the passenger seat and a long hose running to the fuel pump. Thus, my next question.
I"ve been searching relentlessly for a fuel tank to mount between the frame rails, behind the differential. My problem is the dimensions. I"ve sen the 49-52 tank swap, a Mustang tank swap, the 21 gallon Jimmy/ suburban tank swap. My framerail dimensions are 27wx24lx10d as the space available for a tank. Every tank I've seen is too wide. I don't want to drop $300-$500 for an aluminum tank. Any insight/advice from those who have done the swap already?? -Josh |
Re: Captain America 68 short/fleetside
I just pulled the trigger on the poly 21 gallon tank. Thanks for all the help and advice. I"ll post pics when I install it.
