Re: 72 k20 project

i had a little motivation and time today so i got a few things done. i had some friends stop buy and we spent enough time jackjawin that i didnt get as much done as i planed. but i made it into town before the hardware store closed so i have the required bolts to put it all back together if i get that far tomorrow.

these are the new shackle hangers. there will be a little more to them when its all said and done. material is 1/4"

http://i94.photobucket.com/albums/l8...ruck/001-3.jpg

managed to hack the frame all to pieces

http://i94.photobucket.com/albums/l8...ruck/003-2.jpg

and got the replacement part sat in there before i had to shut down. i tacked the little tabs on in my way so tomorrow i will fix that and burn it in

Great work! Loving your hangers too!

ryanroo 03-18-2012 09:29 PM

Re: 72 k20 project

Thanks!

got a little more done.

tacked in

http://i94.photobucket.com/albums/l8...ruck/001-5.jpg

welded

http://i94.photobucket.com/albums/l8...ruck/003-3.jpg

http://i94.photobucket.com/albums/l8...ruck/011-1.jpg

a few views of the hangers

http://i94.photobucket.com/albums/l8...ruck/007-1.jpg

http://i94.photobucket.com/albums/l8...ruck/009-1.jpg

these will be a little more gusseted and plated in. eventually. right now i just want to make it roll again.

nailed the width

http://i94.photobucket.com/albums/l8...ruck/005-2.jpg

hopefully i will be able to go get my engine at the end of the week. that is why i want it to roll. that depends on availability but fingers are crossed.

That's it! I'm taking my project off of here!

Looks really nice. I like how you're doing the rear section of the frame.

Re: 72 k20 project

Very nice looking welds. Going to be a heavy duty K20 beast:sumo:
Can't wait to see it finished.

ryanroo 03-21-2012 08:06 AM

Re: 72 k20 project

thanks guys. i really liked how that rear section came out too. sort of makes me wish i would have just built a whole new frame... to far along for that though.

hopefully it will be heavy duty, but i'm sure it'll be heavy either way. haha

this wandered into my driveway last night. the truck is completely thrashed.

http://i94.photobucket.com/albums/l8...ruck/002-4.jpg

however, this is in great shape and runs good. has 160,xxx. the truck came from a mine and smacked a crib while driving. wrecked the transfer and trans and i will have to look into the rear axle. tie rod was smashed... and the body was totall hammered as well. perfect. it is a 96

Re: 72 k20 project

i got the stationary spring hangers for the rear fixed up. years ago the springs were coming out and good old Midwestern rust had frozen the bolts. my dad torched them out and lacking the proper skill he managed to mangle the bolt hole on the drivers side. it had a cheezball welded washer fix so i cut it off and made a better repair out of .25". i welded that on and squirted a little paint. hoping to have it back on its wheels tomorrow. i will get a picture of it all then.

after that fun, i think i may start dismembering the donor dodge in my driveway for the amusement of my neighbors.

Re: 72 k20 project

i did get the truck sitting on its wheels again.

http://i94.photobucket.com/albums/l8...ruck/002-5.jpg

http://i94.photobucket.com/albums/l8...ruck/001-7.jpg

i also started taking apart the dodge. i got the dash all pulled apart so i can save the harness in case i should need to steal any of it. i didnt take any pics, but just imagine a tornado in a oklahoma trailer park and you get the idea of what the cab looks like now.

Lookin good. Love the Cummins swaps. Would like to do one myself someday.

Re: 72 k20 project

did a little work today.

gutted a beat up dodge.

http://i94.photobucket.com/albums/l8...ruck/001-8.jpg

http://i94.photobucket.com/albums/l8...ruck/002-6.jpg

the engine has the beautiful cake of oil/coal dust in the oily areas. holy crap. next weekend its going for a solid power wash

http://i94.photobucket.com/albums/l8...ruck/003-4.jpg

i also think i found a good strait rust free bed locally for a very good price...

Re: 72 k20 project

had alot of running around to do yesterday. i think i drove 160 miles and never left La Plata county. i did manage to accomplish a couple things.

i got this hauled to the car wash and blasted a thousand pounds of grime away

http://i94.photobucket.com/albums/l8...ruck/001-9.jpg

i also borrowed an engine hoist. hopefully later today i can maybe do something with that.

i got all the remnants of broken dodge scraped out of my driveway. i am sure the neighbors are proud of that.

then, in fine form my white truck had to make a rescue run

http://i94.photobucket.com/albums/l84/ryanroo/001.jpg

my buddies powerstroke started retching oil. talk about a heavy long MFer. that is now beached in my driveway and is part of todays project.

Re: 72 k20 project

since i spent most of the time i had allotted for mocking up the engine sunday trying to fix a bleeding ford, i decided to play around a bit tonight.

it is sitting on blocks under the pan on top of the springs.

http://i94.photobucket.com/albums/l8...uck/001-10.jpg

this is no where near final position just got it under there and off the hoist so i can fiddle with position and all that.

http://i94.photobucket.com/albums/l8...ruck/002-7.jpg

current engine mount system...

http://i94.photobucket.com/albums/l8...ruck/003-5.jpg

it will all end up a little further back and it has to come up in the front but this is pretty close to the height of the back of the trans. looks like the floor is going to get the custom touch as well as the firewall

Re: 72 k20 project

thanks

spent a few minutes after work today and whacked out some stuff for the engine mounts.

hopefully i can add some of the more vital stuff to it tomorrow and give a better idea of the finished product. some of the additional ingredients are visible in the second photo

Very nice. Are the bushings energy suspension bushings for leaf springs or shackles? I've thought about doing it this way before.

ryanroo 04-05-2012 10:28 PM

Re: 72 k20 project

they are leaf spring t-bushings. im not sure the brand but they are poly.

i got some more work on the engine mounts done.

http://i94.photobucket.com/albums/l8...ruck/002-9.jpg

http://i94.photobucket.com/albums/l8...uck/001-12.jpg

i have a set of red and a set of black... i need to get a set of matching colors.

http://i94.photobucket.com/albums/l8...ruck/004-3.jpg

tried for a weld shot but i cant get my camera to do this well

http://i94.photobucket.com/albums/l8...ruck/003-6.jpg

progress this morning

the beginning

http://i94.photobucket.com/albums/l8...uck/001-13.jpg

WTF

http://i94.photobucket.com/albums/l8...uck/002-10.jpg

that allowed for this

http://i94.photobucket.com/albums/l8...ruck/004-4.jpg

from the engine side

http://i94.photobucket.com/albums/l8...ruck/003-7.jpg

then with the height and setback of the engine that pesky frame was in my way.

http://i94.photobucket.com/albums/l8...ruck/005-4.jpg

this is like those purple lines the plastic surgeons on tv use to decided where to slice and dice their victims

this is the resulting carnage

http://i94.photobucket.com/albums/l8...ruck/006-3.jpg

i used all of that cutoff wheel that i could

more to come later hopefully. off to the gym and grocery store to stock up for the week

Very nice work! You going to run a mechanical fan?

ryanroo 04-17-2012 10:42 PM

Re: 72 k20 project

Thanks guys.

i am planning on the mechanical fan. all of my experience with electrics has been that they are never enough. mechanical fans move air very well. shrouds are easy to make and i will have more than enough room as it looks now.

Ryan

Dieselwrencher 04-18-2012 02:53 PM

Re: 72 k20 project

You should have plenty of room for sure now.

ryanroo 04-18-2012 09:45 PM

Re: 72 k20 project

i should hope... i didnt realize i hadn't posted the pics with the engine in its resting place.

the notches in comparison to the parts that got in the way

http://i94.photobucket.com/albums/l8...uck/001-15.jpg

this is with the fan on so you get an idea of the rad clearance. rad should be roughly centered on the body mts.

Awesome build! I like how you went about boxing the frame!

ryanroo 04-21-2012 01:00 AM

Re: 72 k20 project

thanks.

i still have to finish boxing the rear but i got all twitterpated with m engine mounts so i haven't finished up back there yet. i am going to get a bed for it before to long, so i need to get on it.

Re: 72 k20 project

i kept having issues deciding what transfer case to use and what i was going to do for exhaust kept nagging away at me. so after a little discussion with Ryan and his brother the other night about the strength merits of using the np241 i decided to go that route. most of the 241s out there are drivers side F/O. the solution is to clock the dodge case all funny and rework the oil pickup and the shifter. that sounded like to much of an aggravation to me. my personal solution was...

http://i94.photobucket.com/albums/l8...ruck/004-5.jpg

http://i94.photobucket.com/albums/l8...ruck/003-9.jpg

http://i94.photobucket.com/albums/l8...uck/002-13.jpg

now i will be able to use the dodge t-case which is not only better able to hold the torque, but as a design attribute is quieter going down the road and shift on the fly. i also have the strength advantage of the reverse cut gears and my driveline angle should be near flat. i can also use a trash can for exhaust and have no fitment issues. that may be the deciding factor in my turbo choice down the road

Ha Ha very nice bro! That's a great score right there! Great work as well, it's coming along real nice! Maybe if we both get ours running this year we can meet up some place.

Thanks!

i hope i get it up and going this year, but that depends a lot on many other things.

i had the same thought and Lauren(wife) and i will be driving back to iowa when its finished an debugged. the truck was my grandpa's and i really want to give grandma and my dad a ride when its back to being a nice truck inspired by grandpas plans and built to suit me. they are really the only other two people that have any attachment to the truck in my family outside of my mom and sisters who just enjoy the pictures of the build.

Re: 72 k20 project

Oh trust me i know. i saw all there was to see from the business seat of a john deere. then i politely took my leave. i cannot say i've had one regret in moving out here. generally the wages are crap and the cost of living is ridiculous. outside of those hurdles you cant beat the place. and the scenery is superb.

this is the view sitting on my back porch

Re: 72 k20 project

i picked up some ford front u-bolt plates that should work on my new axle even though they are off a later model d60. i also managed to get my frame side engine tabs cut for a first time test, but later that night my DD that i bought the day before blew a head gasket(although after starting to tear it down tonight i might be lucky enough to just be doing an intake gasket). add that to the fact that my backup vehicle (67 m715) is burping and farting because of some funk in the EST i have put the 72 on the back burner temporarily.

with luck maybe i can work on it sunday.
