Re: sprint_9's 72 C10 Project
Worked on a few things today. Finalized my AC compressor, mocked up some brackets for my rear axle brake lines, and tried to figure out the rest of my fuel system.
Set the cab on the frame as well, its great to see it in place and use it to plan out some things. Im not sure if my cab mounts are right or not, I got them from gmcpauls, but they dont look like any of the pictures Ive seen, and Im not sure if I have them in the right order. Ill have to contact them and see if they can help, of course my old ones were pretty much toast so I dont have much to go off of. Next week Im hopefully measuring for wheels, and then shortly after ordering them. Im giving myself a week to make up my mind on what wheels I want, Ive been looking at them off and on for over a year so its time to make a decision. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...pspx4zajmh.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...pswebxdi94.jpg |

Here is my front mount, there is a washer molded into the mount against the cab, and another molded in the bottom cone mount against the frame, and then finally the bottom washer that isnt molded. I dont have the square washer or shim to go against the frame. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...psxntxzzq9.jpg Here is the rear, in the guide it shows a washer on top of the mount, I dont have the washer, but the rubber has like a dome or hump in the middle of it like there is something molded into it. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...pscvbrjqr0.jpg |
Re: sprint_9's 72 C10 Project
The spacer that goes through the center of the front mount should go into center or bottom portion of the rubber as well. The molded washer keeping it from doing that?

Re: sprint_9's 72 C10 Project
No they slide together as they should, in the pic every thing is just loosely fitted.
|
Re: sprint_9's 72 C10 Project
It looks right just don't over tighten the rear mount the will squash down.

Re: sprint_9's 72 C10 Project
Spent some time and finished the axle brake lines and nailed down a final location on my fuel lines, Im really happy how both of these items have turned out. Mocked up my booster/master cylinder to finish that end of the brake lines. Set my seats in the cab to see how they looked and felt, it was great to sit in it and dream of when its done. I would love to have a nice set of buddy buckets, but I really want something with a head rest even if it doesnt look the best. Im not really wild on the gray cloth so I may recover them with black leather, my interior is going to be black.
This coming weekend I would like to try and get done mocking stuff up on and in the cab, then Im on to filling the firewall, and replacing rockers. I had thought about leaving the rockers, but they are pretty rusty inside. Might have some kick panel rust repair also. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...pssqnamhuj.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...psj247gbxr.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...psn5rgyjv2.jpg |
Re: sprint_9's 72 C10 Project
After that I measured for my wheels and am going with kind of the standard recommendations of 20x8.5 with 5.5 BS on the front, and 20x10 with 5.5 BS on the rear. Tire size probably 255/40 and 295/40
Im 90% sure Im going with these wheels, same finish. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...psus8wdiiz.jpg |
Re: sprint_9's 72 C10 Project
Wow looking amazing. Great job with everything and looks well thought out.

Well the other day I said I was 90% sure on wheels, more like 50/50 now. I need to just quit looking and pull the trigger, but it is a big decision. Im really almost leaning toward this one now, Raceline Royalty. |
Re: sprint_9's 72 C10 Project
Either wheel would look really good, you really can't go wrong either way.
|
Re: sprint_9's 72 C10 Project
Both wheels look good! I can't wait to order a new set for mine. Looking good so far!

I would suggest getting either the whole wheel or the center ceramic clearcoated.
had my centers ceramic clearcoated and its the best thing I have ever done. |

Today while going back through Facebook looking for an old picture, I ran across a picture of a truck my dad had posted to my wall. I pointed out that I liked everything about that truck except the wheels, and then suggested if it were my truck it would have the Royalty wheel on it. That was about 3 years ago, and I think my initial impression is the way to go, kind of a gut feeling I guess. |
Re: sprint_9's 72 C10 Project
The royalty wheel is an awesome choice. Your project is coming along nicely.

My project honesty feels like it is moving at a snails pace, even though its really not going too bad. One part Im really dreading is next on my list, rust repair and panel replacement. I enjoy doing about everything else, but welding and grinding really isnt something I enjoy or am skilled at. My cab is by no means terrible, but the more I dig the more I am finding. This showed up last weekend, pounded on it with a 9/16 wrench for about 30 seconds and had this. |
Re: sprint_9's 72 C10 Project
Ouch yeah grinding isn't fun at all. Your build is coming along nicely though. Keep up the good work it will pay off soon.

Re: sprint_9's 72 C10 Project
If you need some exhaust tubing I have alot of 2.5" stainless left over..

Ive been meaning to update, just working on small stuff so I havent done it. I took about a month off from the truck to build a fence, yay, but I got that done before it got hot so Im back on the truck full bore now.
Ive been working on cutting holes in the cab for various things, engine wiring, new radio, etc. Started doing some welding as well, I really havent welded at all so that has been a learning process, but I really enjoy it and have gotten a lot better in a short time. Im not gonna lie, youtube helped me alot. I got the old gas filler filled, and core support creases smoothed. We also finished up the brake lines to the master cylinder and mocked up my coils on my engine. Coils should go down about another inch hopefully, I would have liked to have stacked them 2 by 2 but I just didnt have the room, barely enough as it is. I ordered my wheels about 2 weeks ago, I went with none of my above choices and got Raceline Hooligan's. Ive been eyeing those for a while too and they just jumped out at me. Next couple weeks is going to be rockers, floor support, firewall smoothing. |
Re: sprint_9's 72 C10 Project
Great work here, keep at it

Some of the fun from the last couple days. This has really turned out to be more involved than what I thought it was going to be. Im trying to save my factory cab corners as they are actually in pretty good shape, real minor surface rust. Its just the fact that keeping them on makes for a harder repair since there isnt any room to work. Hopefully I can get these patched up next weekend, but Im guessing it will might take longer |
Re: sprint_9's 72 C10 Project
Yeah, that repair sucks. You should try it on a Blazer, inside the rocker box. Blech. Worth it when it's all done, though

Did some more digging today, and my hole got bigger. My panels are all in decent shape but they are pitted enough or gone completely in the key areas that I will probably just end up replacing them rather than try and save them. So Im probably going to end up with most of the usual repairs for these trucks. Im not really surprised but I had hoped to not have to go this far with the way the truck looked at first glance. Going to have to do some reading and figure out a plan of attack, not really sure if I want to button up the floor supports and then work my way to the inner rocker and then onto the outer rocker, or just cut from the outside and work my way in. I feel like if I cut from the outside in Im going to loose alot of my reference points and end up with alignment issues. |
Re: sprint_9's 72 C10 Project
That's a 5-dimensional puzzle. Keep/patch the floor support, if you can. The bolt holes are a good reference point, and most of the repops are garbage anyway. Make sure to mock up your door and fender for alignment before burning the outer rocker in. It's not bad once you get into it, just labor intensive
|
Re: sprint_9's 72 C10 Project
I think thats what Im going to do, get the floor supports at least tacked, if not done, and use them as a reference before I go farther. You arent kidding on the repop floor support quality, I think on the fronts Im going to piece in my own as they arent as bad as the rears.
I was really disappointed in the rocker quality too, the tooling marks leave a lot to be desired. It kind of worries me about the quality of short box Ill get and the nightmares that might hold. |
Re: sprint_9's 72 C10 Project
From where did you order? I've had good luck with GMCPauls, though you pay for it. Big box stores and eBay are a crapshoot

I ordered from a local vendor close by that deals with truck parts, Ive also ordered from classicparts.com. I got both rear floor supports, left from my local guy, right from classic parts, both are the exact same with the tooling marks. Not a big deal at all on these as they will never been seen.
My rockers have the same if not worse tooling marks, at first I thought I got a bad set or something but I searched some other threads and most of them that I could see had the same marks. These will body work out, but I guess I expected a little bit better piece. It might just be the norm, as I have never done anything like this before. Also all my panels are Key Parts/Tri-plus. |
Re: sprint_9's 72 C10 Project
My rockers were same way and required slight body work too.
|
Re: sprint_9's 72 C10 Project
Yup, that's how they all look. Driver side typically fits better than passenger. Be prepared to pie cut in a few places to get the fit spot-on. Also, the radius at the rear of the pass side was incorrect. I'm probably a bit too picky, though...

Small update from last weekend. Welded some plates to the floor for my seat bolts. I started out just tacking and moving, like what would be done on body work, and then we figured with the thickness of the plates, no butt seam, and the creases and steps in the floor to just give a full bead a go. I have to say it worked great, and was an awesome learning experience getting to lay a full bead in relation to just tacking.
I ended up finding/creating a hole in one of my cab corners, so I decided to cut them both off and just start over. This will be more work but it will be easier to do the floor support, and I can fine tune my gaps during the panel replacements. Gaps from the factory leave alot to be desired, hopefully I can do a little better. Also Fedex dropped off an upgrade today, they look really nice. |
Re: sprint_9's 72 C10 Project
Also a side note, Photobucket can suck it.
Not really sure what to do with my thread since over half the pictures are gone now, half temped to start a new one |
