As you can tell by my Sig.... I'm a big LS fan. But I'm also getting tired old seeing one in everything lol. This time I thought keeping it old school with a new school twist! And I already ordered the MSD trans controller for the 4L80E 😆

Re: 72 Suburban Making it mine

:waah:

Got the 402 apart, found a few things that didn't make me to warm and fuzzy..

Cylinder 7 has a little issue. This explains the white milky junk that came out of the water passages... it had to be block sealer.

http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c1...psmovwnwac.jpg

Also found that the flaking cam was slowly taking out my Number 2 and 3 rod bearings and third main bearing...
http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c1...psdz6di9hq.jpg
http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c1...pswjbo79gm.jpg

Rod number 3
http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c1...psmmh0iea9.jpg

The crank lived, it should polish out. The pistons and rings all looked great, very even wear on the top rings, nothing stood out as an issue. The thrust and anti thrust on the pistons are clean and had very little contact with the cyl walls. For a 43 year old engine, it was in great shape... besides the nasty casting flaw...

So I sent a mass text out to my Car Guy buds. I found a numbers matching 402... I got it home last night and on the stand. Pulled one head and its a stock bore and I can see cross hatch. Crossing my fingers this block works out.

It is funny.... I can almost feel the black hole of the LS world sucking me in.....

Advanced Design 03-09-2015 09:45 PM

Re: 72 Suburban Making it mine

Yeah, those bearings don't look good. The engine on the stand sounds like a good one though!

SO.... I got the other 402 home. Its in great shape, but there are enough scuffs I would rather machine it than just hone and use.

So after nearly a week of back and forth and wearing my buddies out with options.... I went from ATK crate motor, to rebuild 402, to LS....

Well... LS won out, called my local yard just to see what they had. Well they had just got in an 02 Yukon Denali. I pulled the trigger last night on the engine, and as a bonus, I got all 3 rows of interior!!! in Two tone tan leather

I pick up the seats tonight, engine some time next week.

Decisions...decisions...good direction to go with the LS. Nice score on the seats. Did you get a 5.3? Hopefully it has the accessory drives. Our local yard trashes them for some reason.

Re: 72 Suburban Making it mine

I have my local yard trained for LS pull outs. I've gotten enough... Lol

It is a 6.0 LQ9, should work well!

Re: 72 Suburban Making it mine

Seats need a little cleaning and some repair on the drivers seat, but I think they will be fine

Nice to see somebody else from around here! Which yard do you use for your LS stuff? Great work, it really makes me miss my 72 Burb I had in highschool.

I use Neal's there in Peoria. Maybe I'll see you at some local events?

benscool1 03-21-2015 08:00 PM

Re: 72 Suburban Making it mine

I checked with them when I first started researching an LS swap, they seemed pretty reasonable for a complete lift out. Glad they seem to have treated you right. Maybe, I didn't realize there were many events around Peoria? I've got a lot of friends who keep telling me how simple the swap is but none have ever actually done it. It'd be nice to talk to somebody who has actual experience with an LS swap in our trucks.

Just had our third baby last Friday. May be a couple weeks before I get it ready to install. Cam and springs and lots of cleaning!

Which Vintage Air system? Looks like a sure fit with the plates?

bowtieguy79 04-05-2015 09:05 PM

Re: 72 Suburban Making it mine

Ya, used the sure fit evap kit, condenser kit, and line kit separate since I am using the LS engine. I have a sanden 508 and holley LS ac brackets

Got a new toy for the shop.... Just need to now make the shed a shop instead of a storage unit!

It's a 9k lb atlas from Greg Smith equipment. Just finished putting it together tonight.

Nice trucks! A lift is really handy. The only regret with mine is I didn't get it 10 years sooner.

Well, the 72 Specific Big Block mounts, don't work with the LS.... ]

DS fits fine, http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c1...psrdjgksyi.jpg

PS is off by a bit...
http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c1...pswrt81sxk.jpg

Put out some feelers last night, I think I have a lead on some SBC frame mounts. Hope this isn't a sign that it won't be ready for Power Tour.... :(

Advanced Design 04-27-2015 05:37 PM

Re: 72 Suburban Making it mine

Hope the mounts turn up. Build fast...40 days...plenty of time.
Engine looks good!

Re: 72 Suburban Making it mine

Found mounts, not to find the time to get them painted and installed!!

bowtieguy79 05-04-2015 09:22 AM

Re: 72 Suburban Making it mine

It was like assembling a jig saw puzzle, after a lot of fussing, a little cussing, my dad and I got the SBC mounts to agree with the LS and the Suburban frame.

Now, to get on it and get it all going by the end of the month.
http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c1...pssylrjnzj.jpg

Hope to get the 80E bolted in this week, and get the drive shaft dropped off to get shortened. Then move on to Exhaust

Good luck on the projects... I'm in the same boat. I have too many interruptions...:)
