Gas Tank for 64 GMC
Dave I have a 64 GMC that I would like to get a custom tank for. The tank is in the stock location behind the front seats in the cab. I have 2 ideas for relocating the tank. 1 idea would be to put it in the back between the frame rails but instead of having the filler through the bed I would like and try to design it to come out behind the rear license plate. The second would be to have a gas tank/storage combo that would sit in the bed behind the cab, the bottom portion a gas tank and the middle being an area to mount the battery and the air tank and pumps and the very top for a lift out storage tray. In a perfect world the tank would connect through the cab and fill from the stock filler location. Can you give both of these some thought and let me know if you would be interested in building me a custom tank. Thanks Rob Fisher robfisher5@shaw.ca Here is a drawing of the tank to go in the back behind the rear end. It would mount to the underside of the frame to allow clearance for the filler. Calculating the cubic feet it looks like it would hold about 23 gallons. |

Re: Boyd Welding-67-72 Rear Mount Aluminum Tank
Man, I missed it, new to the Chevy C10 group and just started doing a search for gas tanks and came across this post. Hope you will do another group buy soon, I love the tank. I doesn't look like it hangs low, I have a roll pan and don't want to see tank when I look at the back of the truck.

Re: Boyd Welding-67-72 Rear Mount Aluminum Tank
I'd like to suggest 2 changes to the current design.
1) Side Fill Tank, Make the filler tube 1.25" taller so it clears the frame rail without issues. My frame is roughly 4.375 tall but the bottom of the filler tube is 3.625" from the mounting bracket which runs it into the top of the frame rail. I still don't have this fixed or the tank mounted. :( http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/p...ictureid=13145 http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/p...ictureid=13755 2) The rollover valve is positioned almost directly under a bed floor support. If it was moved forward 2" toward the cab, I might have been able to mount the tank INSIDE the frame rails & shim so the filler would clear the rail. My tank also fit very snug front-to-back when clamped down but seemed to have a very reasonable amount of play side-to-side. Consequently, I moved the rear frame brace back. Just some ideas I hope you consider. I was expecting way more "bolt-in" than this has become. I "expected" to deal with a filler in the bed side but not the rail. Beautiful tank, just wish I was using it. |
Re: Boyd Welding-67-72 Rear Mount Aluminum Tank
I just got my tank on thursday and it looks great. I was wondering if the ROV needs to be hooked to anything (Like a breather) or is it good as is?
