Re: Parts truck

this one has the stock K20 M/C. i want to swap it for the stock matched 1 ton M/C. they still have a firm pedal but a little less travel. i would match it to the axles. especially if you liked how the dodge felt.

Re: Parts truck

This truck is doing fine. i have some little stuff left to piddle with. need to lengthen the park brake cable and mount the flex lines appropriately. need to replace a tie rod dust boot. the engine leaks oil, but i knew that. i've been driving it to for the last week and a half with no issues other than it continually marking its territory. the other truck however hasnt had much done to it.

Re: Parts truck

Nice build up of the yeller truck! Have you decided on what color scheme you want to go with? That rainbow deal you told me about sounds way off base.

ryanroo 10-10-2013 08:45 PM

Re: Parts truck

Rainbow would be ideal, but so hard to layout. for now im gonna stick with yellow and rust. ill decide more at a later date.

today was our first snow(sheesh) and it is still going. not cold enough during the day to do much but its below freezing now. i decided that today was as good a day as any to install the front driveshaft. i dont care for spicer style front outputs. anyhow, i pilfered through the pile of candidates in the garage, found one of approximate length and adequate condition and installed it. i was planning on ordering a new one, any likely will still do so at some time. the slip in this one is pretty tight, but i dont like thinking about it and i am a hubs locked in kind of fellow.

on a bit of an unrelated note, i rather need to reorganize the garage. there are technically two open bays. still had no where good to go. perhaps i will move the green truck over(when its off jackstands-more on that some other time) and get the 350 off the floor on a stand. or move a couple dana 60s and a 70 two sets of doors a tailgate and another wayward 205 from the short bay... jeez

not much room here...

Re: Parts truck

also, you can see the warn vr12000 on the floor the woman got me for my annual celebration of surviving one more trip around the sun. it hasnt decided where it will live. i want to put it behind the rear bumper on the green one for loading trailers, but it would look right at home on the front ol' pee bucket. then there is the jeep, which has had a custom built winch ready bumper that has been always empty for the last 4 years...

Re: Parts truck

A guy never has enough room does he?

What are you going to do for a front bumper?

ryanroo 12-07-2013 06:33 PM

Re: Parts truck

kinda forgot about this thread. so far im doing nothing for a front bumper. i keep thinking ill buy a tubing bender, and with that maybe make a minimalist front bumper to at least keep the ever growing herd of mule deer at bay and give the winch a place to live. i did get the garage cleaned and the yallow truck gets an inside spot now. pretty upscale accommodations for such a low rent turd!

i need to do a front brake job on this thing. the rotors are warped and give that nice shimmy when you step on the brakes. pretty irritating.

i also found a really nice truck that would be a perfect body swap for this thing, but i am trying not to deflate the green truck budget anymore... we'll see how that goes.

Re: Parts truck

A yellow 4wd Suburban would make a really nice match for this!

Re: Parts truck

so, i had a little spare time. this thing ended up on the list.

did an inspection and the bearings will be OK, this axle will get a full blown redo when this truck is in the surgery bay. re packed and new rotors pressed on the hubs.

the napa biffed it and sent home the wrong seals and brake pads, so its a wait game until tomorrow. i had my sister in law pick it up for me and she didnt know the difference

one piece at a time... eventually ill get to this truck, or sell it. i think i am going to try to get the jeep in the garage once i am finally done with the green one. i want to do some long postponed rear suspension work. i've been thinking about bit peppier drive train too, so then i can use the stuff in the jeep for the parts truck. its current drivetrain is a tbi 454 nv4500 and np205. very good stuff for this old chevy. i also have a brand new all spring 4" lift in the garage for it. it would be a superb beater truck if i got all that done.

id like to clean up the body and paint eventually too, provided i keep it. to many project i want to do next, so who knows.

ryanroo 06-14-2014 08:26 PM

Re: Parts truck

i did wrangle the correct seals and pads today. despite hurricane force(mild exaggeration) winds i got this beast back on its feet. i decided to rotate the tires since it has about 10K on it since they were new.

i cant believe i let it go so long. this truck is a much nicer driver, especially in town now that it doesn't shake like a tweaker when you stop. and with properly broken in new pads and rotors it stops so much better than the old glazed BS that was on there

Re: Parts truck

Since the i finished i have put about 25 miles on the truck and it has changed my perspective about this truck. i always figured i would sell it to fund another project after i got done with the green truck and didn't need the extra spare driver.

now i find myself thinking that the jeep deserves some love next and since this one is the little brother of the group, he will get the pretty nice hand me downs. i can really see this being an awesome project in the spare kind of truck. if it was fuel injected with overdrive, AND a big block, its a heck of a spare project/DD/oh-well beater. i also have the beginnings of a gnarly jeep powertrain stashed. so that helps the decision in that direction...

now i have my spare time booked up for the next fifteen years. haha

Thanks Guys!

Update. it has about 30K on the clock since it was forced back into service. to date it has asked for starter, an alternator and a lower radiator hose. the only occurrence that required a little time on the side of the road was the hose. i should have replaced the rubber when i swapped in all the parts, so i take the blame on that one. the alt and starter both aged gracefully and i swapped them both before any inconvenience. it continues to be loud and rattle a lot. its bumpy and ugly as sin. it smells and requires regular but not excessive quarts of oil. it always starts and is more loyal than your dog.

here are a few recent road trip pics to prove the awesomeness of junkyard K20s

Top of Lizard Head Pass. 10,200' i think. this was Xmas eve. the roads were all a disaster and i was driving from the Durango area to Glenwood Springs Co. this thing is a mountain goat.

Wow, you have been driving the wheels off it, good to get an update. I want your axle ratio Ryan! about zero RPM at 70 MPH! I like saving old K20's too.

I'm digging this truck! I need one like this. I think takin her down to raw metal and just clear coating the damn thing would be rad. Fix the oil leaks and call it a day.

Another one on the road defying age. Love it.
