Re: 1988 Suburban "V Rig" Gets Cummins Power
24V is smooth with the head:
http://i191.photobucket.com/albums/z...DSC00214-1.jpg 12V have "ears" that stick up above the runner and are easier to drill and tap than a 24V http://i181.photobucket.com/albums/x...r/000_0014.jpg |

That does look like a pain. Have fun with that Ryan!

Re: 1988 Suburban "V Rig" Gets Cummins Power
I've been working away on this thing. I have the front cross member done, welded in the steering box support plates, got the engine painted, and the injection pump now has a 3k gov spring in it. Now the engine is getting new injectors, and a Denny T stage II fuel pin. This thing should run pretty good. I'll try to get more pics later. Hopefully before the weekend I can have the engine sitting back in the frame.

Re: 1988 Suburban "V Rig" Gets Cummins Power
Time for updates! I've been sweating my butt off working away on this thing! I got the front cross member and engine cross member finished and bolted back in. I also installed some heat/sound deadener insulation on the fire wall.
http://i181.photobucket.com/albums/x...IMG_0005-1.jpg http://i181.photobucket.com/albums/x...IMG_0006-1.jpg http://i181.photobucket.com/albums/x...IMG_0010-2.jpg Got the engine painted and the injection pump installed. Also installed the SFI rated flex plate. http://i181.photobucket.com/albums/x...IMG_0008-2.jpg http://i181.photobucket.com/albums/x...IMG_0009-1.jpg Yesterday I sat the engine back in it and hung the transfer case on it to see what mods are next. I'm going to have to cut the cross member and clearance it for the drive shaft. The drive shaft also needs lengthened. I installed the starter, hooked up the fuel feed line, installed the OE oil pressure sensor, and have to get a bushing for the OE water temp sender. http://i181.photobucket.com/albums/x...IMG_0025-1.jpg http://i181.photobucket.com/albums/x...IMG_0019-2.jpg http://i181.photobucket.com/albums/x...IMG_0021-2.jpg http://i181.photobucket.com/albums/x...IMG_0022-1.jpg http://i181.photobucket.com/albums/x...IMG_0026-1.jpg |

Re: 1988 Suburban "V Rig" Gets Cummins Power
I finally got the D70 in the rear of this and got the turbo and exhaust manifold back on. I have the down pipe built, now to finish the exhaust and build the trans mount. Been cleaning parts and pieces and painting them, installed the new water pump, and removed the dodge truck harness and PCM. I'm going to use it to run the alt, grid heaters, and over drive on the trans.

Re: 1988 Suburban "V Rig" Gets Cummins Power
Been plugging away at this thing. Anyone that says these don't take much time, must not know. The exhaust tip is just tacked on there to see if I like the angle the pipe is coming out at. It does have 4" going over the tcase too.

Re: 1988 Suburban "V Rig" Gets Cummins Power
I've got to figure out where the trans cooler is going to go now, and get the trans linkage figured out. Still waiting on the radiator and drive shafts, then I need to finish up the wiring. Yee haw!

Cool build! Where did you find the GMC grille without the emblem base molded into it?

Today I spent 4 hours installing this. Wow, I'm glad I don't have to do anymore of these for a while.

Re: 1988 Suburban "V Rig" Gets Cummins Power
Here is some more progress pics. The radiator support is done, I just have to paint it. Been working on replacing the tie rod ends, installing the DIY4X spring plates on the D60, got the fan hub and belt on the engine. Fuel lines are installed and hooked up, and new injectors are installed.

Re: 1988 Suburban "V Rig" Gets Cummins Power
More done. Inner fender repainted.
http://i181.photobucket.com/albums/x...031_125300.jpg New pulley for A/C set up. http://i181.photobucket.com/albums/x...031_125017.jpg A/C bracket. http://i181.photobucket.com/albums/x...031_125028.jpg Throttle cable set up installed, transmission pressure cable brackets hooked up and I got the cable adjusted properly. http://i181.photobucket.com/albums/x...031_125037.jpg Here was the first shot at making the trans mount. I ended up removing 1 1/2" of height from it to get the transfer case to clear the floor board. This utilizes the stock NP205 tcase rubbers. This truck had poly ones, so it worked out really well. http://i181.photobucket.com/albums/x...025_121410.jpg http://i181.photobucket.com/albums/x...025_121420.jpg http://i181.photobucket.com/albums/x...025_121428.jpg I have to remove the trans cross member and add gussets to the area where I raised it to clear the drive shaft. Tomorrow I will finish the front axle shock mounts. We had to put the mounting bolts in the mini lathe and turn them down from 3/4" to 1/2" so the chevy shocks can be used. |
Re: 1988 Suburban "V Rig" Gets Cummins Power
When I was repairing the LH fender, I realized the radiator support had another broken piece. It was still bolted on the fender. I fixed it and then repainted the entire support.

Re: 1988 Suburban "V Rig" Gets Cummins Power
Did you make the AC bracket? I want one!
Is the frame stock or reinforced? Great work by the way, I can't wait to get started on mine. Keith |
