Re: K30 Cummins Dually build
Nice work. I still need to do a front shaft on the Excursion and I was wondering how much of the ford flange had to be machined/removed to go on a dodge flange.

Since it's too dang cold I figured I would do some reading while waiting for warmer temps

Some videos to add...
First one is when the timing was off after I sheared the key on the IP. Second all back together with correct timing, sounds much better Third is a cold start after sitting a week 40 degrees out and fired right up. Couldn't believe how easy it started, ole 6.2 never would have started like the 6bt does. http://youtu.be/hyai5g2spvE http://youtu.be/ge5RHkF7SLI http://youtu.be/GP6go2ZghIo |
Re: K30 Cummins Dually build

Yours is looking great! |
Re: K30 Cummins Dually build
Some updates....
Got it registered Saturday, now it's legal for the road....if I ever get it on the road LOL First... painted the inside of the cluster.. before.. http://i1219.photobucket.com/albums/...ps58ec822b.jpg after... http://i1219.photobucket.com/albums/...ps115d6e7d.jpg Replacement radiator off epay that has to be replaced again because the tanks have cracks on them argh http://i1219.photobucket.com/albums/...ps65acb42a.jpg Got my mud flaps mounted, had to trim them a bit but for $11 each I can't complain.. http://i1219.photobucket.com/albums/...ps63ec10b0.jpg To help out with the wiring I printed up super sized schematics.. http://i1219.photobucket.com/albums/...ps30a408b4.jpg Now here is the trouble when you buy a truck in pieces and don't get all the correct parts, this the parking brake cable that came with the truck in a box with a bunch of other parts, obvious that it is not going to work so I had to order and replacement. http://i1219.photobucket.com/albums/...ps03cceb27.jpg That's it for now, working on getting a replacement radiator, all I have to do is take a pic of the bad and send it to the parts place and they will send me a new one, easy enough I guess. |
Re: K30 Cummins Dually build
Looking good. Ebrake cables can be a real bugger on old trucks because they're always hacked off or not right. Good luck on the radiator. I had a fiasco with Classic Radiators on Ebay and after 4 damaged radiators I just got a refund and purchased one at my local Napa.

Re: K30 Cummins Dually build
I am waiting on $$ to pick up a 2nd gen radiator off fleebay right now. If you don't mind me asking, what brand is yours? I don't want to run into the same issue. How does the quality of the core look?

Re: K30 Cummins Dually build
Ok, I was watching one from prime choice and one that is a Vista Pro brand. I got the part numbers off my least favorite parts web (rock auto) and then found it on epay for cheaper. I miss the days of getting a quality rebuild locally for way cheaper. Thanks for the info.

Re: K30 Cummins Dually build
I feel your pain Jeremy. Have you had bad experiences with Rock Auto?

Plus unless your ordering a bunch of stuff the shipping charges jack the price. So I just find whatever I need on epay and order it. |
Re: K30 Cummins Dually build
Legendman hit the nail on the head. If I'm expecting poor quality, I'll just buy it cheaper on fleebay.

Re: K30 Cummins Dually build
Big update...
Got it registered and insured, been doing some test drives on the road and found I have a serious death wobble issue. So I started with getting new tires and rims for the front. Figured maybe a tire was out of balance or a rim was bent. Well after cleaning up a pair of rims I brought and putting different tires on by hand. I used airsoft bbs to balance the tires and after all that the death wobble was still there. So hunting around I found worn king pins might be the issue. For $170 I picked up king pin rebuild kits for both sides from East Coast Gear, all dana/spicer parts. http://i1219.photobucket.com/albums/...psba7296e2.jpg All ripped apart, and need to find something to get the king pin out, I heard it can be a really PITA to get out. http://i1219.photobucket.com/albums/...ps73d48924.jpg Luckily the hardware store across town had the 7/8" allen wrench I needed for $23.00 Hope I don't break it. http://i1219.photobucket.com/albums/...ps89704e3e.jpg Well the l/s pin came right out with little effort, r/s required some gumption to get it out. Lower bearing races were a bugger to get out, had to grind the race a bit. http://i1219.photobucket.com/albums/...psca10500e.jpg What happens to create the death wobble is the spring looses tension over time and allows the plastic bushing to jump around. You can see the spring height in the next pic... r/s on the left, l/s spring in the middle and new spring on the right. http://i1219.photobucket.com/albums/...psc59c539b.jpg Used my seal / bearing drivers to put the lower bearing race back in. Brought these over 20 years ago, glad I still had them. http://i1219.photobucket.com/albums/...pse0c4e3c6.jpg Getting the r/s back together.. http://i1219.photobucket.com/albums/...ps4e7ac915.jpg Well after that 2 day chore I can say the death wobble is now gone. Also wired up my O/D and lock-up for the 47rh so I could really test and I am tickled everything is working. Now to get cracking on other stuff on my to-do list.. |
Re: K30 Cummins Dually build
Some more updates...
I picked up this winch bumper a while back and never really liked how it looked. http://i1219.photobucket.com/albums/...psa1ac4b29.jpg So I sold it for $150 and brought a decent stock front bumper for $25 to use until I build the custom bumper I want. http://i1219.photobucket.com/albums/...ps925f3819.jpg Also painted the l/s door panel, they were a faded gray color. http://i1219.photobucket.com/albums/...ps87118d45.jpg A while back my power steering pump was leaking so I brought a seal kit for it and attempted to replace the seals. Ripped it all apart and put all new seals in and put it back on and it leaked worse than before LOL. Went to autozone and got a rebuilt for $55 slapped it on, no more leaks LOL Guess I should checked the parts stores first DOH http://i1219.photobucket.com/albums/...psf0813d2c.jpg |
Re: K30 Cummins Dually build
The kingpin spring looks like the one I found on mine except my wobble was limited to LH side. I am going through both sides but I made the mistake and ordered up my parts separately instead of ordering up the entire kit like you did. Keep up the good work!:metal:

Re: K30 Cummins Dually build
Nice work, the truck really looks good! It is a good feeling to have it legal, and drivable!

Re: K30 Cummins Dually build
I have a question, how did you get the intercooler and radiator tucked into the front core support? more pics? I am in the process of doing the same build, any tips or pointers are greatly appreciated.
Thanks Jeff https://www.facebook.com/Threedaysauto |

http://i1219.photobucket.com/albums/...psa6d50fd4.jpg Have to finish it up with some new supports running from top to bottom, I am just going to use some flat bar steel to stiffen it up. |
Re: K30 Cummins Dually build
Nice! It looks like you didn't have to cut into headlight sheet metal, just supports? Most builds I see they cut the supports and headlight sheet metal, and I am try to avoid that. Plus you where able to use dodge radiator, fan shroud, and fan. That is what I love about your build and hopefully I will be able to duplicate that.
