Where do I find the model number for my 1970 c10? I just want to make sure it was always a short bed. Thanks.

Best place is on the SPID, just below the vin number. Your looking for a 07 where the 09 is, on the example below. You also should find 115 in the wheelbase box.

On the back/inside, of the Glove Box door.

Guys I am trying to decode this VIN-CCE242Z129155 the problem is this truck is 4x4 and the guy who did the resto on it said everything sure seemed factory that pertains to the 4x4 front diff etc etc. Is the only possibility that the cab and or frame have been swapped? its a 3/4 ton 4x4 cheyenne super so a K20 but not according to the vin in glove box? The vin decoder is excellent and according to this it is a 2 wheel drive so Im a little confused, especially when guy tells me nothing shows signs of it not being factory? Thanks for this excellent forum

Tobaccofarmer, It's a swap of some kind. Is your Vin number the same on your Vin Plate and on the glove box sticker(SPID)? Is your cab Vin Plate still attached with the factory rosehead rivets? If so, then go to the frame. There is a partial Vin number on it. Check to see if the partial Vin on the frame matches the last part of your Cab Vin. Here is a pic to show the location of the frame Vin. This will tell you if the frame and cab were married at the factory.
And welcome to the forum.

Post a pic of the truck. The front end of a 54 is different than the earlier ones.

Re: GMC and Chevrolet VIN and Model Number Decoders with pics.

Ronzo, Sorry I don't know much about the Canada produced trucks from that era. The vins were different from the USA built trucks. Is yours a GMC?

0=1950
9424 = GMC pickup delivery, 5800lbs. GVW, 125 1/4" wheelbase
12014 = sequence number

Re: GMC and Chevrolet VIN and Model Number Decoders with pics.

Ok, Here is a better decode. Same info though.
0 = 1950
9 = GMC
4 = 9420, 9430 Series
2 = 125.25 Wheelbase
4 = pickup delivery.
12014 = sequence number

That's a nice GMC you got there. Looks like a great start for your project.

Awesome, thanks for the help!
It was bought locally and lived on a farm all of its life, never registered and never ever had a plate on it. I think I'm going to sell it though, put the money towards my dream truck. I just wanted to save it from the crusher.

That truck doesn't have the 54 front end on it. Its one of the earlier front ends like from 47/51/52.

If you read this thread up to this point then you understand that a model number from the the SPID is needed as well to fully identify a vehicle. A VIN is a unique number to the vehicle but only tells us it is a 4x2, V8 powered, pickup made for the 67 model year at the St Louis assembly plant. With the production serial number 150598.

Now what you need is the model number. This further confirms VIN info plus identifies what type of pickup, (Fleetside/Stepside) and the bed length (coded as a cab to rear axle range in inches).

If a true SWB Fleetside your model number would be CE10734.
Without a SPID showing the model number it going to take more work to authenticate the truck as a probable.

Re: GMC and Chevrolet VIN and Model Number Decoders with pics.

Thank you for the information, I read the whole thread first... That does not mean I throughly understood it. The whole truck was repainted about 12 years ago they removed the SPID when it was painted. Do I have any other way to find out the model number.

I apologize I'm brand new to these trucks I have just wanted one for 25 years....

Thanks again for sharing your knowledge.

Sean

There are several things you can do but only the first at this point will confirm the model any further.

First, Is there any factory/dealer paperwork with the truck?
A sales invoice of any sort should have the model number.
Unfortunately a Protect-O-Plate will not give us the model number.

Second, Are the door ID plate rivets correct rosettes and not pop rivets or black in color?

Third, Is the frame number, that may be stamped in two places, on the frame. See Brucemans1968's post above #59 http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...8&postcount=59. This won't prove out the model but if the frame number matches the last eight characters of the VIN then it is the original frame.

In any event a close inspection of the frame should disclose any shortening efforts. As will cut down fuel and brake lines.

Hopefully everything is in order.
Finally your truck was built after the first of the year, actually in 1967.

Re: GMC and Chevrolet VIN and Model Number Decoders with pics.

I have a great big file folder full of paperwork I'll look through it and see what I can find the vin plate looks correct to me I'll post a picture of it.

I could not find any evidence of the frame or brake and fuel lines being cut down the frame looks stock to me...

I'll check the rail where indicated and see if the numbers match.

Once again

Thank you!

I don't think the engine number decodes. That number (C477749) should be on the original engine, stamped on the distributor pad. Is that a 1960 truck?

Yes it is, and it didn't come with drivetrain.
Thanks.
