Re: 68 aka "Chained in Porterbuilt Prison"

The flat area right below the dash "pad" will have custom billet inserts made by these guys http://www.petesfab.com/

Try to fab ac vents today-remove original key hole-wiper hole next to cluster-that curved piece in center of dash(bottom) will house a Doc's Kustom
piece for controls and a vintage air controller

Really have not decided on "tunes " yet---Anybody lead me 2 a radio that I can hide with only remote control fob?? LIke to keep dash as slick as possible......jim

a slick little idea for a radio, run an ipod then feed that to an amp which feed the speakers. i like this idea because everything can be under the seat, and ipod can sit on the seat. keeps the dash clean and everthing out of sight. i think its rockford that has pretty small amps now, i don't think they're larger than 6''.

Don't know why I didn't think of that--that's what I do for tunes in my shop-with a yamaha amp and speakers I used to d.j. with-Thanx........jim

Just ordered vintage air compac unit--billet specialties vents--billet controls-will show pics this wkend of placement --4 vents ............probably 3 more wks on dash then i will switch to "Nates Stuff" ......lol......It's killing me looking at a table full of parts but once I get on something try not to get sidetracked..........but we all no how that can be...........jim

Re: 68 aka "Chained in Porterbuilt Prison"

5 Attachment(s)
After second round of skimming dash--Took a break and engineered the vintage air "compact" unit --plenty of air with this unit---1st had to cut out the blower motor "boot" where cowl and kick panel meet (1st pic) --then weld in a "shoe" to force any water from cowl drain "shoot" to discharge to bottom and then out---Upper cowl will be smooth so there will be minimal water in cowl area to drain--I am reworking the top of "shoot" to make sure that's where the water goes
Mounted air box so the rounded fan motor side fits snuggly into curved area in that 1st & 2nd pic---almost made for it! Notice air box does not extend in the open end of kick panel--will install a panel to hide rest of opening ---I'm running all 4 hoses out that end to a bulkhead fitting mounted in the flat bottom of cowl end--all hidden in the end by inner fender and fender--having that kick panel opening like it is I can get to top side of bulkhead thru there if needed!!

everyone have a good week....dash pics with ac vents and controls at end of week!!.............jim

WOW that tucks it in very nicely !! what will prevent the water from coming in the cab under the cowl vent, is it boxed in underneath the cowl panel ?

WOW!
awesome work on the dash. unfortunately im not going to be able to use the dash out of the 59 truck cause of the angle of the steering column and stuff so im going to be doing this dash now (which was my VERY close 2nd choice so im happy) what sucks is a guy was sellin one of these dashes at the humble swap meet last month for about $100!! and its good to know this dash can be done and i now have some reference pics. thanks for the update. sweet build. you think you could get some pics of the top of the dash? like how it fits up against the windshield and closer pics of how you connected it to the post? thanks

If u look inside the upper cowl-there is a trough that funnels water-that's the curved channel in the 1st pic--granted there is an area above where the trough is widest that needs slight change to make sure all water is channeled-which I will do--I'll see if I can get a pic of what i'm saying in am--Any way I did replace the piece above a.c. over to side panel-No water will enter cab--That "shoe" in 2nd pic makes sure
water coming out of chute is going out were it was intended!...jim

Dang, my own swapmeet and I miss a dash!! I'm welding it in next week-It overlays part of existing dash for rigidness (is that a word??) and easy weld in -then skimmed-made it removable at 1st to do 90% of body work on the stand--then it will be permanent!

Think through everything U want"under" the dash before putting it permanent--makes it so much easier-that's why I bought ac and fabbed it 1st--Now defroster ducts,etc...............jim

If u go to super chevy saturday--look me up-in the swapmeet area with 67-72 parts and advertising Conroe

That's actually the height it needs to work properly with column--stock 55 dash is shorter both length and height-that's why i added to bottom and length--never have liked seeing all that floor board and heater box but don't be fooled by pics-It's only 2 1/2" lower ar bottom than stock dash--but makes all the difference in look I think--Will take some rear window pics when I reinstall it and give U a different look...jim

Yeah i know exactly what you mean about adding the bottom part to make it look better, but you took it too a whole nother level by adding the hump to the bottom middle like the 2 on top. Thats top notch work jim.

Lookin forward to your next update

That's exactly what that is--pass side of second dash upside down-then tubing cut down running to door post--the curved piece above tubing is cut from 2 doors right below mirror--has right curve i needed-heavy gauge-cheaper than buying a sheet--just don't ask to see the 2 doors-the restoguys would hang me!!!!!........jim
