No real exciting update today. The doors went into their final coat of primer. We will block them one more time and hopefully they will be done.
The boy gets the next few days off for the 4th of July. Happy America, everyone! |

We were able to spend about half the day today working on the front panel on the bed. What a complete pain. They had 1/8” thick plate welded on both sides and about 75 spot welds holding it in place. I bet it weighed over 100 lbs. We got it out of there though and the new one in place. Have the front half of the bed floor but still need to order the back half and the tubs.

The boy was out of town last week so nothing got done on the truck in his absence. However, he is back at it today. They are blocking the cab hopefully for the last time. Also, the doors are close. Real close. Hopefully we will see blue on both this week.

Re: Son's 68 c10 Short Bed
I can only imagine how cool it would have been if my dad and grandad did for me what you and your dad are doing for him. Hats off to ya man.:metal: By the way, what is your sons name? I hope he gets signed up on the forum and we get to hear his point of view about all this.:chevy:

Pretty cool update coming up soon. I am going to wait to say it until it's all confirmed though. |

I've said it once and I'll say it again, this is a lucky boy. His papa decided if were doing this, we might as well do it right. Anyway, this just happened.
It's an '08 4.8/4l60e combo with about 80k I picked up off ebay. Should be here in a week or two. It's going to screw up the time line but it will be worth it in the long run. |
Re: Son's 68 c10 Short Bed
welcome to the LS side...

Re: Son's 68 c10 Short Bed
A lot of guys probably hate to see anything but a SB/BB in these trucks, but I think they're awesome. They're definitely light years ahead of SB/BB in terms of technology and efficiency and there's such a huge aftermarket for them. What I like about the Gen IV setups is that there isn't a TAC module and the PCM is so much smaller than the Gen III's. And your block should be all aluminum for weight savings and better heat dissipation.
Who knows what we'll be putting in restorations in the future! |

@MDPotter, For the last decade or so we have pretty much used LS based engines in everything. Makes life so much simpler in the long run. This will make for a great driving truck he can enjoy for years. |

First coat of base on the cab.

Re: Son's 68 c10 Short Bed
That's exciting! There's nothing like seeing a cab go from primer to base and clear.

I have been out of town lately and so there aren't any real updates. I did get down to the shop last week and pull the truck into the sunlight for a couple of pics though.

Re: Son's 68 c10 Short Bed
That is really a fantastic color for our trucks. It almost looks period correct to me. Thanks for the pics, and keep em' comin!;)

Re: Son's 68 c10 Short Bed
Excellent color choice. It's gonna be nice.

No real updates from last week. My dad went to the Goodguys show in Washington so the shop was closed. However, on Friday, the motor was delivered. I met the driver and opened up the crate for a peek. Looks really really clean.

On Friday, I was able to get down to the shop and pull the old motor with my son. I was also able to sell it on Saturday which free'd up a little cash to order a radiator and a new steering column. Today, my son pulled the inner fenders and dropped them and the radiator support off at powder coating.
Still moving forward. |
Re: Son's 68 c10 Short Bed
Looks like the same dismantler that my dad got his engine from. It showed up in a nice crate and was really clean, no damage. What are you doing with the harness and PCM as far as eliminating all the unneeded wiring and reprogramming?

I haven't decided who I am going to use to build the harness. We have always used HotwireAuto in the past, and don't have any complaints. I called them on this one but their quote seemed high. As far as the PCM goes, we have always used HotwireAuto for these as well. I am kicking around the idea of buying HPTuners and doing it myself. We will see though. |

Not the best picture but they started color sanding and buffing the roof yesterday. This is part of it buffed with compound.

My son sent me this yesterday (notice the "circle game" reflection ). The cab is all color sanded and buffed. I haven't seen it in person yet but looks really slick in the picture.

Re: Son's 68 c10 Short Bed
Haha he got you. Looks good! Can't wait to see it all assembled.

A few updates: They got the windshield in yesterday. Today, my son finished painting the front of the frame and they got the motor stabbed (fakest smile I have ever seen).

It's been a few weeks since I have updated this. Things are going painfully slow now because school started back up. We were able to spend a few hours on it last Saturday though and got the headers on and column/cluster installed.
