tvblazer78,

What method are you going to use when smoothing your top? I am putting together the ideas for my 772wd project, and while the top is in excellent condition on the inside, the outside has a bit of the green fungus from sitting outside. I too was thinking about smoothing and painting it, just not sure of the proper method.

Thanks,

Twisted78SS

You may need to ask Chevyrod, he is the one getting ready to do that. But I have smooth mine out about ten your ago. I had a shop do it for me and they did not have fun woking on it. He said that he will never do one agian. So Good luck with it.

The texture is in the gel coat. First thing to do is pressure wash the top, and use a good detergent also. That should knock out a lot of the fungus. From there, take a DA with 80 grit, and start sanding. Finish it up with 180, then use a high build primer to fill in the sanding scratches. Block sand, and it's ready for paint. You may need to prime it a couple of times, depending on how bad the sanding scratches are. It's kind of a PITA, but the results are worth it, especially if you are changing the color of the top. Prepping the texture sucks too.

I am going to start on the top soon. I plan on doing what jonboy is describing, the only thing I am going to do diffrent is use some body fillers to get the factory waves out of the top and a good 2k urethane primer to level everything up. Once you sand the texture off of these tops they are really wavy. I will take some photos once I start on the top if it will help.

I finally got some time this weekend to start on my top. Here are a couple of pics of the progress so far. I filled the factory seams with fiberglass and one coat of body filler. Hope to have it primed this weekend.

Here is a couple of pics of the top back on the blazer with the seams gone:c2:. Now I think I need to shave the factory seams on the metal roof and/or the rain gutters as well. It's never ending!!!!!

1.The tires are 33x19.5x15 (Mickeys)
2.The wheels are Weld racing 15x14 or 15x15 (Not sure they were on the blazer when I got it.)
3.Not sure on the back spacing, I did a rough measurement this morning it looks 5.5 offset. I will be pulling the wheels off soon for paint and I'll give you some exact measurements then if that will help you.

Thanks for the compliments guys!!!!!!!

Any thought of switching wheels/tires out to the BIG 20" Mickey Thompson tires? That would be killer!
