Some more progress. The battery cables are installed. Unfortunately the negative was too short, so I took it back last week and had one made that was 8" longer.
I also got the hydraulic pump reinstalled today. It works great, no leaks!!

I need to rebuild the carb soon; it is leaking gas on the manifold. It probably is not a good deal since the exhaust and intake manifold are integrated.

The next big project will be the brakes.

good luck with your carb. I had mine rebuilt and it still leaked. I had to wind up buying a rebuilt one from Auto zone. It worked a whole lot better than the one my friend rebuilt for me.. might have been something else wrong with the original but it was frustrating.

Got the sideboards done. Now I need to run out and get a big tarp. Then I will be all set to clean up my yards this week.
Actually, I need to make sure the trailer lights are working. Once those are working, then I am all set to clean up the yards.

I can help with the brake swap after I finish this other small project.

those boards look cool. are you gonna get a chance to paint them before your season starts?

71swb4x4 04-20-2009 10:05 PM

Re: 1967 C30 dump truck

Todd, no time to paint the boards. The mower starts running tomorrow!! Got the trailer works working tonight, what a chore. They were a mess. Actually, they are still a mess, the difference being now they are a mess that works. Hopefully I will get time this summer to rewire the all the rear lights.

Tomorrow I need to get my tarp hooked up to cover it all, so the leaves and grass don't blow out, and then it will be time to sit on the mower for a couple days.

Trailer works? Should be trailer lights. I guess I waited too long to edit it.

Nice truck man. Your rims are split right? What size were they for that year? My 71 has 19.5s and they are not split rims. I've got the bug for these c30s now. I am going to look at a 67 within the next couple days.

Richard, my original rims were 16" split rims. Now I have 16 1/2" non-split rims on it. I have 16" non-split rims that will go on after I get them blasted and painted.
Have you looked at that 67 yet?

I haven't looked at it yet. It's a long way from me and I am waiting for pics before I head down. The price is fair.
Thanks for the info.

Re: 1967 C30 dump truck

Just working with it. I fillled it full of grass and leaves when I mowed each yard for the first time. Now I mulch everything. I do have a bunch of black dirt on it. I am landscaping two houses as I find free time. Hopefully I will have it cleaned off after next week. Then I have 10 loads of wood chips to haul for a customer. We are landscaping around their 300' line of trees.
I need to get the brake swap done, but I probably won't have time for that until late June or July.

you could keep using it the way it is for the next 5 years with the traffic you have up there. I wouldn't sweat it.

now having said that he will probably never get the disc swap done. LOL

Finally a little progress. I hauled the dump truck and parts truck to 68c15 in Sioux Falls. The plan is that next Saturday we will start tearing into the front brakes. The hope is that Saturday and Sunday we can swap the disc brakes and hydroboost over. The will give me front power disc (currently power drum) and it will add power steering. This should be a huge upgrade for this old work horse.
There is not a lot of trailer left. We actually had a toolbox on the front of the trailer that I had to remove in order to pull the truck far enough ahead to get the rear wheels on.

well, we are in between "never" and "5 years". LOL

I drove it a little and took the whole rig to the shop. I don't see how he made it with the brakes the way they were. the RF wheel cylinder was leaking so the fronts were not doing anything at all.

the current stage of improvements will be complete once we find a way to mount the PS pump, get the hydroboost pushrod lengthened safely, and run hoses for it all.

maybe in another 2 years we will swap the rear end. assuming it doesn't have 6.14:1 gears like the "red blur" does. LOL

Re: 1967 C30 dump truck

First of all big thank you to Todd. He really knows his stuff and can keep a cool head. We had enough curve balls on Saturday that I think he was ready to call it quits. Thankfully both the dump truck and the parts truck were taking up bays in his shop so he couldn't kick me out. :D

We had a bad control arm, broken coil spring, brake line that didn't fit and a host of other problems. Each time Todd would work through the problem and find acceptable solutions.
Our problem now is that the power steering brackets don't work, but I am working on that solution.
The truck is on the ground with four wheels. We only have the items that Todd mentions above. With a little luck it will be driving in a week.

don't forget, we need to plumb new lines for the brakes while including the combination valve. I think garden hose and duct tape should be OK.

I have some left over line from the aquarium, let's use that for the brakes so we can see when the air has been bled out.
