Interesting how it has both LF9 and B3J which somewhat say the same thing.

B3J is an Oldsmobile RPO. Not sure why they needed both RPO's.

Negative.

LF9 is the engine itself.

B3J is an interior option for all the extra insulators, heat shields, etc and peripherals which are required with that engine option.

You all might have noticed that the options are mostly "grouped" by like kinds, for example:

B's are interior type stuff (throw in floor mats, carpets)
L's are engine
M's are trans
G's and H's are axle related
A's are glass/window
C are HVAC
D = mirrors
F = suspension
J = brakes
U = radio

Cool thread guys, I was wanting to find a few good 73+ examples and I hit the jackpot here! Should be able to duplicate this with not to much trouble, going to take a bit of time though. Got about all the work (It's just a hobby!) I can handle with the 66-72 labels but there have been many people looking for these.

Jeff

Welcome, chipflyer.

I've been sending quite a bit of business your way...

Also - you may have noticed that RPOs get "recycled" and reused.

Example: in my day, an LS6 or an LS7 was the ultimate hi HP 454 cu in big block.

Now - those RPOs describe a new gen small block.

Thanks Keith, I was wondering why I had so many requests for these lately. :lol: There appear to be a number of different styles and shades of blue.
Can someone scan and email me the scanned image of the one like I have shown? I need to use it for reference to make sure I have all the dimensions correct.
Thanks,

Jeff

Its funny you say that. Quite awhile back I was telling a buddy of mine my truck had an LS9 motor. Of course it to finally convince him it did have an "LS motor" was sending that picture. :lol:

Keith,
I thought I remembered you saying your ruck was a factory tachometer truck but I dont see it listed on the SPID. Yours does have a tach right?

Here is a pic of a 1977 with a few options. It has tach,inside hood release, bed rails, buckets, intermittent wipers, etc.
The deluxe front and rear bumpers are actually the chrome version with the black impact strips. Just like the sports use but not painted.

I was just noticing that, too.

Here's the story:

Remember when I said that the MY6 transmission was on stoporder? When they brought that option back from stop order they forgot to re-release it as available with cruise control (RPO K34) and with the tach cluster (U16).

They did re-release cruise and tach with the M62/M64 Saginaw manual transmission models, so the part numbers were available and correct - but the system wouldn't let me order my truck that way. It was very frustrating trying to get around that.

So I added them after the fact. There was a cruise "service kit" with instructions available so I installed that after I got the truck home. The tach cluster I "procured" in some other way (...I don't remember how ;) ).

A relatively early build, apparently. VINs start at 100001 and yours is in the 113,000 range.

My truck was built a year later (almost to the day) in Flint Michigan. Built on Sept 29, 1986 (1987 model) and they had already built more than 317,000 units in Flint.

K

Actually Keith, I have found that Flint starts with 300,001 for Chevy and 700,001 for GMC. I've been doing a LOT of research on squarebody VINs and RPOs to compile a comprehensive list of RPOs by model year. Not sure why that is though since all other plants start with 100,001 for Chevy and 500,001 for GMC.

All the SPIDs I have from junkyard trucks tend to be very different depending on plant and who was printing them at the time.

Some are one sided in alphabetical order, some are two sided zigzagging in alphabetical order, some are in reverse alphabetical order (Zs first) and some are just typed in with no order!

K = generator and cruise options - oh wait...!

:D Fixed that for you, they are kind of a hodge-podge at times and RPOs can be the same throughout many years and cover a slew of marques.

And what year was the SPID made smaller, showing only the codes and not the descriptions?

This I am not sure about and would have to check into. There may have been some plant-to-plant variation even within the same model year.

We might be able to discern that from this thread once we have more entries.

K

I think the Fremont plant started in mid-1986 with this style of SPID, I know I have at least one 1986 SPID that's the smaller current-like SPID. The other plants were either very late 1986 or 1987.
